Priorities before buying
Start by measuring the available space, then compare the actual drying capacity, your washing routine and the installation requirements for the exact model.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Size and installation |
Measure the height, width and depth, then allow for skirting boards, connections and clearance for the door. For a stacked installation, check that a compatible front-loading washing machine and stacking kit are intended for use together. |
I want to install the equipment without blocking a walkway, door or access to the appliance door. If depth is limited, compact washing machines may be worth considering: UFC-Que Choisir states that some front-loading models have a depth of 33 to 45 cm. |
| Washing routine |
Compare the drying capacity with your usual load and the washing capacity. Also check the duration of the eco programme and the drying programmes available on the chosen model. |
I want to avoid a wet load holding up the next wash. A separate tumble dryer allows you to dry one load while another washing cycle starts. |
| Energy, water and technology |
Check the A–G energy label and the weighted consumption per cycle for the specific tumble dryer. For a washer-dryer, examine the data for the wash-and-dry cycle separately. |
I do not want to choose based solely on saving space without considering how the drying function works. Since 1 July 2025, new domestic tumble dryers placed on the EU market must use heat-pump technology, according to the European Commission. |
| Installation without an external vent |
A vented appliance requires an outlet to the outside. With a condenser model, check how the water is handled, whether there is a tank and whether it can potentially be connected to a drain. |
My flat may not have ducting or an opening intended for venting damp air. I therefore need to confirm the installation configuration specified in the instructions before buying. |

Frequently asked questions
Do you need an external opening to install a tumble dryer in a flat?
Yes, for a vented tumble dryer, as damp air must be expelled outside. A condenser tumble dryer, including a heat-pump model, does not require this type of outlet: water is collected in a tank or sent to a drain. Check the instructions, access to a drain and the clearances specified by the manufacturer.
Can you still buy a new tumble dryer without a heat pump in France?
For new domestic tumble dryers placed on the European Union market since 1 July 2025, only heat-pump appliances may be placed on the market, according to the European Commission. This rule concerns newly marketed appliances; it does not prohibit the use of an existing appliance.
Can a washer-dryer dry the entire load it has washed?
Not necessarily: the drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity. UFC-Que Choisir states that washing capacities range from 5 to 12 kg depending on the model, compared with 2.5 to 8 kg for drying. Check both capacities on the exact model’s product information and plan to remove some laundry if your washing load exceeds the drying capacity.
Can you stack a tumble dryer on a washing machine in a small home?
Yes, provided the two appliances are compatible, the washing machine is front-loading and a suitable stacking kit is installed. UFC-Que Choisir recommends choosing two appliances from the same brand or, failing that, the same manufacturer. Do not simply place a tumble dryer on top of the washing machine without a kit designed for this configuration.
Where should you place an airer when drying laundry indoors?
The Q-WASH report published by ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extraction vent. This guidance can help you organise indoor drying; it does not replace an assessment of your home’s individual features.
