Which households is it for?

Households that often dry full loads indoors

If damp laundry regularly piles up, a separate tumble dryer is worth considering if you have the space and its capacity matches that of your washing machine. UFC-Que Choisir states that condenser dryers, including heat-pump models, can be installed without an external vent.

People living in small homes without room for two appliances

A washer-dryer combines both functions in a single space. However, check the washing and drying loads separately: European regulations require this distinction, and the figures can differ considerably from one model to another.

Households able to continue air-drying with good ventilation

A washing machine with a suitable spin speed can reduce the time needed for air-drying. ADEME recommends checking the energy label for spin performance, water, energy and noise, while keeping the room properly ventilated.

Buying priorities

Suitable spin cycle

Choose this if: you have a well-ventilated area for air-drying and mainly want to remove more residual water from your laundry.

Bear in mind: a high spin speed will not make laundry dry, nor will it remove the moisture released into the room.

Separate tumble dryer

Choose this if: you regularly dry large loads and can dedicate space to a separate appliance.

Bear in mind: compare the capacity, noise level, energy consumption, eco programme duration and installation requirements.

Washer-dryer

Choose this if: your home only has room for one appliance but you need mechanical drying.

Bear in mind: you may need to remove some laundry before starting the drying cycle.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and space Tumble-dryer technology; whether an external vent is required; room ventilation; installation instructions. I want to limit damp laundry in my home without choosing an appliance that is incompatible with the available space.
Usable capacity Eco programme capacity of a tumble dryer; separate washing and drying capacities on a washer-dryer; the household’s usual load. I want to avoid splitting every wash because the drying load is too small.
Energy consumption and noise kWh per 100 cycles, eco programme duration, noise level and capacity, as shown on the energy label. I’m looking for a laundry routine that works around living areas and the time I have available.
Washing-machine durability Durability index, availability of spare parts and repair conditions for the exact model. If I replace a washing machine, I also want to consider its repairability. In France, the durability index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025, according to the French Ministries for Ecological Transition, Energy and Territories.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing a washer-dryer solely on its washing capacity

The drying load may be considerably smaller. For example, Electrolux states a washing capacity of 8 kg and a drying capacity of 4 kg for the built-in EW8W3816BI model. A large wash may therefore require two cycles or the removal of some laundry.

Always note both capacities shown and check that the drying load suits your routine.

  • Buying a vented tumble dryer without checking access to the outside

A vented model needs an opening to the outside or a duct, unlike a condenser appliance. This requirement may determine whether it is compatible with your home.

Confirm the technology, available space and installation instructions before buying.

  • Relying solely on the words ‘heat pump’

The technology does not replace a comparison between models with the same capacity. The energy label shows, among other things, consumption in kWh per 100 cycles, the eco programme duration and the noise level.

Compare the figures on the energy label rather than an old energy class or a brand promise.

  • Blaming all damp or mould on laundry

ADEME describes air-drying laundry as a highly moisture-generating indoor activity, but persistent damp can also be linked to the building or its ventilation. Anses associates exposure to mould with proven respiratory effects.

Plan your drying and ventilation, then arrange a suitable assessment if odours, damp or mould persist.

Brand guide

Bosch

The Bosch range includes washing machines with high spin speeds, heat-pump tumble dryers and washer-dryers, making it possible to compare several configurations for drying laundry at home.

  • The Bosch WAN2827TFR is listed as an 8 kg washing machine with a maximum spin speed of 1,400 rpm.
  • Bosch explains that the speed may be reduced automatically if an unbalanced load is detected, so the maximum figure will not necessarily apply to every load.

Electrolux

Electrolux offers built-in washer-dryers, among other options, for installations limited to a single space.

  • The PerfectCare 800 EW8W3816BI offers 8 kg of washing capacity and 4 kg of drying capacity, a useful distinction when planning loads.
  • These capacities apply to this specific built-in model and do not describe all washer-dryers in the range.

Miele

The French range includes heat-pump tumble dryers in different capacities, including 8 kg and 9 kg models.

  • Miele presents the TWC640WP as an 8 kg heat-pump tumble dryer.
  • Claims about low energy consumption and gentle drying are manufacturer statements; check the energy label, dimensions and installation requirements for your chosen model.

Beko

Beko offers heat-pump tumble dryers, including larger-capacity models for households drying bulky items.

  • The brand lists models with capacities of up to 12 kg in its heat-pump tumble-dryer range.
  • Beko states that its heat-pump technology reuses warm air to reduce energy consumption; compare the label, eco programme capacity, noise level and dimensions of the exact model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a drying appliance solve a structural damp problem in the home?

No. Mechanical drying can reduce the amount of laundry drying in the room, but it will not address a leak, faulty ventilation or existing mould. Anses confirms respiratory effects linked to mould exposure; if mould persists, this issue must be dealt with separately from buying an appliance.

How can I air-dry laundry indoors without using the tumble dryer every time?

Dry your laundry in a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extraction vent. The Q-WASH study referenced by ADEME specifically recommends preferably using humidity-sensitive extraction; ventilation remains complementary to addressing any underlying structural problem in the home.

Does a tumble dryer need an external vent?

It depends on the technology. According to UFC-Que Choisir, condenser tumble dryers, including heat-pump models, can be installed without an external connection, whereas a vented model requires an external opening or duct. Also check clearances, the electrical connection and the instructions in the manual.

Which parts of the energy label should I check for a tumble dryer sold in France?

Compare the eco programme’s kWh per 100 cycles, maximum capacity, duration and noise level. Since 1 July 2025, the new tumble-dryer label has used an A to G scale, according to Gifam; for condenser appliances, it also shows water-condensation efficiency.
