Which households is it for?

Households drying several loads indoors each week

You need a solution that reduces the waiting time between loads and limits the amount of damp laundry taking up space. The right choice mainly depends on how often you wash, whether you have room for a dedicated appliance and whether you can dry laundry in a well-ventilated room or one fitted with extraction.

Flat-dwellers with limited space

When your installation is limited to a single appliance or an airer in a small room, compare the washer-dryer’s actual drying capacity, its dimensions and its connection requirements.

Households wishing to keep using an airer

An effective spin cycle, a ventilated room or one with extraction and, depending on how you use it, a dehumidifier with a laundry mode are the key points to consider when managing humidity and drying times more effectively.

Buying priorities

Start by considering the room’s ventilation and how often you do your laundry. Then compare capacities, installation requirements and maintenance before choosing an appliance.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity in the home Spin efficiency class, room size, ventilation or extraction outlet. For a dehumidifier, check the laundry mode, humidistat and condensate drainage. I want to avoid turning a poorly ventilated room into a permanent drying area. ADEME states that air-drying laundry is a major source of indoor humidity.
Capacity and frequency Compare the washing and drying capacities of a washer-dryer separately. For a dedicated tumble dryer, check the stated capacity and its actual footprint. I need to process several loads without having to remove some of the laundry before drying. A 9/5 kg washer-dryer washes 9 kg but dries only 5 kg in a cycle.
Space and availability Measure the recess, available floor space and clearances specified in the manual. Also check the duration of the combined cycle if one appliance has to handle both washing and drying. I have to choose between freeing up space with a single appliance and retaining a higher drying capacity with a separate tumble dryer. Electrolux states that a complete Eco 40-60 cycle takes 6 h 20 on its cited 9/5 kg model.
Energy and maintenance Consult the energy label and EPREL data for the exact model. Check the technology, filter, condensate tank and whether it can be connected to a compatible drain. I want to compare like-for-like data rather than relying on a standalone claim. Bosch’s guide recommends cleaning the appliance filter after every cycle.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based solely on its washing capacity

The drying capacity may be considerably lower than the washing capacity. With the cited Electrolux 9/5 kg model, a full load may require two drying cycles, additional air-drying or a reduced washing load.

Always compare the washing capacity/drying capacity combination and the duration of the combined programme before deciding that one appliance will handle all your laundry.

  • Assuming an airer in a small room has no impact on humidity

ADEME’s Q-WASH study describes air-drying laundry as the activity that produced the most indoor humidity among those examined.

Use an airer in a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extraction outlet. Otherwise, reassess the load, spin cycle and whether an additional appliance would be worthwhile.

  • Stacking a tumble dryer or connecting a drain without checking the model

Bosch manuals specify that stacking requires a suitable connection kit and that appliances from different manufacturers, or with different widths or depths, should not be combined in the same column.

Note the appliance’s exact reference, check the dimensions and use only the stacking or drainage kit declared compatible by the manual or manufacturer.

  • Comparing dehumidifiers solely by litres per day

The extraction figure depends on the test conditions. De’Longhi states 10 L/24 h for the DEP210 at 30 °C and 80% relative humidity, conditions that may differ from those in a domestic drying room.

Check the test conditions, the expected room temperature, laundry mode, humidistat, tank or continuous drainage, as well as the area actually covered.

Brand overview

Electrolux

A useful reference when comparing freestanding washer-dryers where space limits you to a single appliance.

  • The cited official models clearly distinguish between washing and drying capacities, notably 9/5 kg and 10/6 kg.
  • The drying load remains lower than the washing load; check the configuration, connections and clearances in the model’s manual.

Whirlpool

A reference point for a heat-pump tumble dryer designed for a family-sized capacity.

  • Whirlpool presents the CWD84MWWSFR as an 8 kg heat-pump tumble dryer, rated at 63 dB.
  • The brand’s stated moisture-detection functions do not remove the need to check the energy label, location and maintenance instructions.

Bosch

A reference point for checking the installation, stacking, condensate drainage and maintenance requirements of a tumble dryer.

  • Bosch manuals explain the use of a suitable connection kit for stacking and the compatibility of certain connections to the water outlet.
  • Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact reference; a kit should never be assumed to be universal.

De’Longhi

A reference point for a portable dehumidifying solution used with an airer when a tumble dryer cannot be installed.

  • The cited DEP210 offers a laundry function, an adjustable humidistat from 30 to 80%, a 4 L tank and the option of continuous drainage.
  • The stated extraction rate of 10 L/24 h is measured at 30 °C and 80% relative humidity; it does not directly predict results in every room.

Meaco

A reference point for households looking for a dehumidifier marketed with a laundry mode.

  • The brand offers appliances with a laundry mode and humidity sensor for drying clothes on an airer.
  • The brand’s claims regarding energy consumption and drying speed should be checked against the exact model, its power, operating temperature and room size.

Frequently asked questions

Can a vented tumble dryer work without an outlet to the outside?

No. The European Commission states that a vented tumble dryer releases moist air outdoors and therefore requires an external vent. A condenser model collects the water in a tank or can send it to a drain if the model and connection allow this.

Does a heat-pump tumble dryer need a duct to the outside?

No. A heat-pump tumble dryer is a condenser appliance and does not require an air duct to the outside. You will still need to manage the condensate by emptying the tank or using a drain hose where the model is designed for this connection.

Can I dry 9 kg of laundry directly in a 9/5 kg washer-dryer?

Not necessarily. With the cited Electrolux 9/5 kg model, the maximum drying load is 5 kg, compared with 9 kg for washing. A full load may need to be split before drying or finished on an airer.

What should I check before installing a washer-dryer?

Measure the space and check that you have a flat, hard floor, that the appliance is stable, that it does not touch a wall or other appliances, that air can circulate beneath it, and that the drain hose and earthed socket are suitable. The exact clearances are always those specified in the manual for the chosen model.

Can a dehumidifier replace a ventilated room or a mechanical ventilation outlet?

No. For air-drying laundry, ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extraction outlet, preferably humidity-controlled. A dehumidifier can remove moisture from the air and help with airer drying, but it does not replace these conditions.
