Key selection criteria
Start by measuring the available space and deciding whether you need to dry a full load or only small amounts. Then check the installation, maintenance and requirements for air-drying laundry.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Humidity and ventilation |
Drying method; whether the room can be aired; functional ventilation; management of the tank or drainage for a dehumidifier. |
I want to reduce the time a load remains hanging in my living space. ADEME states that air-drying laundry indoors releases a significant amount of moisture, while France Rénov’ explains that ventilation renews the air and removes humidity. |
| Available space |
Width, height, depth, door clearance and access to connections; separate drying capacity on a 2-in-1 appliance. |
I may only have room for one appliance, or I may need to keep walkways clear. A folding vertical airer reduces the floor space used, whereas a washer-dryer means accepting a lower drying capacity than its washing capacity. |
| Running costs |
Energy label; drying technology; programme information; water and energy consumption for a wash-and-dry cycle. |
I want to compare real-world use using consistent data rather than relying solely on the stated capacity. UFC-Que Choisir reports that heat-pump condenser tumble dryers are the most economical among the technologies it compares. |
| Installation and maintenance |
Filters, water tank or drainage; electrical socket; connections; compatibility with a stacking kit if the appliances are stacked. |
I want an installation that is practical for everyday use, without discovering after purchase that a tank needs frequent emptying or that a kit is required. For a stacked laundry tower, check the exact appliance references and the kit recommended by the manufacturer. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a vented tumble dryer suitable for a home without an external outlet?
No. A vented tumble dryer must expel moist air outside and therefore requires a suitable outlet. UFC-Que Choisir recommends considering condenser tumble dryers instead when this type of outlet is not available.
Why should you check the drying capacity of a washer-dryer?
Because it is lower than the washing capacity. A machine may wash a full load but only dry part of it, so you may need to remove some laundry before the drying cycle or run two cycles.
Can a dehumidifier replace airing or ventilation?
No. France Rénov’ states that the air in the home must be renewed continuously and that ventilation removes humidity. A dehumidifier extracts water from the air and can support an airer, but it does not renew the air.
Can you stack a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine to save space?
Yes, but only if both appliances and the kit are confirmed as compatible. For example, Electrolux states that its documented kit is intended for front-loading appliances measuring 47 to 60 cm in depth and requires a check using the PNC number; this does not apply to every appliance.
Which information should you compare on the label of a new tumble dryer?
Compare the A to G energy label and the product information provided with it, including the QR code that gives access to EPREL. The European Commission states that covered tumble dryers placed on the Union market since 1 July 2025 use the most efficient heat-pump technology.
