Who are these solutions suitable for?

Tenants or homeowners using an airer

You have limited outdoor space and want to reduce the clutter caused by drying laundry without automatically buying an appliance. ADEME states that drying laundry indoors requires a well-ventilated room or one fitted with an extractor.

Households doing laundry frequently

You want to get your laundry back into use more quickly and can set aside space for a dedicated appliance. Capacity, energy consumption, maintenance and condensate management then become practical considerations.

Small homes without room for two appliances

You need to combine washing and drying in a single machine. A washer-dryer provides this format, but its drying load is smaller than its washing load, as UFC-Que Choisir points out.

Priorities before buying

Start with the available room and its air circulation, then compare the actual drying capacity, connections and energy information for the specific model.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and ventilation Room size; effective ventilation; whether there is a mechanical ventilation extractor vent if laundry is regularly dried indoors. I want to be able to use an airer without turning a small, enclosed room into a drying space. ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with an extractor.
Time and space Drying technology; duration of standard programmes; space required for a dedicated appliance; whether an external air outlet is needed. I want to remove damp laundry from the room more quickly. A condenser tumble dryer avoids the need for an external vent, unlike a vented model.
Energy and the label Energy label from A to G; consumption stated for the standard programme; separate data for washing and wash-and-dry cycles. I want to compare appliances on a like-for-like basis. The European Commission states that the A-to-G label for tumble dryers has applied to new appliances since 1 July 2025.
Installation and maintenance Dimensions and clearances; drainage of condensed water; access to the filter and condenser; washing/drying capacities of a 2-in-1 machine. My home requires an installation that is simple and practical for everyday use. I also check the drying capacity rather than relying solely on the washing capacity.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a vented tumble dryer without a usable air outlet

A vented appliance must expel moist air outdoors through an opening or duct. Without this installation, it will not suit the room’s requirements. UFC-Que Choisir also describes it as more energy-intensive than condenser models.

Confirm that a suitable external outlet exists and that its use is permitted before comparing programmes. If this is not possible, consider a condenser or heat-pump model instead.

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based on its washing capacity

A 2-in-1 machine may be able to wash more laundry than it can dry. An oversized load then means removing some of the laundry or running several cycles.

Look for both capacities shown in washing/drying format and plan your laundry around the second figure. Also measure the total depth required, particularly if the machine will sit beneath a worktop.

  • Using a dehumidifier instead of ventilation

ADEME recommends ventilating first and checking the vents and ventilation system when a home remains too humid. A dehumidifier can be used as an additional measure.

Use it as an extra appliance while laundry is drying, without giving up proper air circulation. If you are unsure about your home’s ventilation, seek appropriate advice.

  • Neglecting to clean the filters and condenser

According to AEG support information, a condenser clogged with fluff can damage the appliance and increase its energy consumption. For the relevant models, the filter must be cleaned after every cycle.

Before buying, consult the manual to check access to the filter and condenser, as well as the required maintenance tasks. Then follow the recommended schedule for the model you choose.

Regular maintenance takes time, so practical access to the parts that need cleaning is important.

Brands to know for drying appliances

Bosch

Worth considering for a condenser or heat-pump tumble dryer when condensate drainage is an important installation requirement.

  • Bosch sells a drain kit for certain compatible tumble dryers, allowing condensed water to be directed into a basin, trap or drain channel.
  • Compatibility must be confirmed in the manual and for the exact reference. This kit is not suitable for vented tumble dryers.

Miele

Worth considering for 8 or 9 kg heat-pump tumble dryers if certain fabric-care or noise-reduction features are important to you.

  • On some French product pages, Miele presents 9 kg heat-pump models and features such as SilenceDrum and SteamCare.
  • These features are specifications and claims relating to specific models from the brand, not a conclusion that applies to the entire range.

Electrolux

Worth considering for a washer-dryer when a single appliance needs to handle both washing and drying.

  • The French range includes washing/drying capacities of 8/4 kg, 10.5/6 kg and 11/7 kg, depending on the models displayed by Electrolux.
  • Choose based on the drying capacity and check the programmes available on the model selected.

AEG

Worth considering when access to the filter and condenser, along with maintenance instructions, are important factors in choosing a condenser or heat-pump tumble dryer.

  • AEG support information details cleaning the filter after every cycle and checking the condenser where it is accessible and indicated.
  • The maintenance process and access to the condenser may vary from one model to another.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dry laundry in a bedroom or small enclosed room?

This is not a suitable general solution. The ADEME/CSTB study recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extractor vent. If humidity persists or ventilation seems insufficient, seek appropriate advice.

Does a condenser tumble dryer need to be connected to a water outlet?

No. Condensed water can be collected in a tank that you empty. On some compatible appliances, a drainage kit allows connection to a basin, trap or drain channel. Check the manual, kit and whether a connection is genuinely possible before buying.

Is a vented tumble dryer suitable for a flat?

Only if the room has an external opening or duct through which hot, humid air can be expelled. This requirement makes it less practical in many flats than a condenser tumble dryer, and UFC-Que Choisir describes it as more energy-intensive.

Why can’t you always dry a full wash load in a washer-dryer?

The maximum drying capacity is generally lower than the washing capacity. To run washing and drying without removing any laundry, load the machine according to the stated drying capacity.

Which energy-label data should you compare in France?

For new tumble dryers, compare the A-to-G label applicable since 1 July 2025, without equating it with the old A+++ to D labels. For washer-dryers, the European Commission states that an A-to-G scale has applied since 1 March 2021. Check the data for the cycle that matters to you, particularly the wash-and-dry cycle.
