Who is this choice for?

Tenants with a small kitchen

In a studio flat or narrow kitchen, measure the available space and check the connections first. Then decide between a countertop appliance and a 45 cm freestanding model.

Occupants with an uncertain moving date

If your stay might be cut short, check the rental term, notice period and collection arrangements. If you buy, make a plan for what you’ll do with the appliance when you leave.

Small households staying for several months

If you need more capacity for your daily washing-up, compare 45 and 60 cm models, the information on their energy labels and whether you can transport the appliance at the end of your stay.

What should you check before choosing?

In temporary accommodation, check the available space and connections first, then weigh up the capacity you need against your moving date. If you’re buying second-hand or renting, how the appliance will be collected also matters.

CriteriaWhat to checkWho it matters to
Space and connections Measure the space and access routes, then check the plug socket, water inlet and waste outlet. If your plans involve altering the accommodation or its fittings, get the landlord’s written permission, as recommended by ANIL. In a small rented kitchen, I need to be able to install and use the appliance without making unauthorised changes; around 36% of consumers would make this compatibility their priority.
Length of stay and moving out For a rental, get the contract length, notice period and collection arrangements confirmed. If you buy, plan for transport or resale. If my moving date changes, I want to know how to return or move the dishwasher; around 29% of consumers would make this flexibility their priority.
Capacity and usage Compare place settings and, on the energy label for the specific model, check the kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and noise level, as recommended by ADEME. When several people create washing-up every day, I’m looking for a suitable capacity without taking up unnecessary space; around 21% of consumers would prioritise this need.
Condition of a second-hand appliance Check the model number, dimensions, that it works and that it comes with the necessary connection accessories before arranging collection. If I buy second-hand, I need to be able to inspect the appliance and collect it; around 14% of consumers would put this check ahead of other criteria.

Things to bear in mind

  • Assuming you can always end a rental early

Collecting the appliance early does not necessarily bring your contract to an end. Orent’s general guidance and specific terms do not cover the same audience: the latter are explicitly intended for business customers.

Before signing as a private customer, get written confirmation of the applicable term, notice period and what happens if you leave earlier or later than planned.

  • Choosing an appliance just because it looks compact

A small size doesn’t guarantee suitable capacity or that the appliance can be connected. The exact model’s dimensions and your kitchen layout are still key.

Measure access routes and worktop space too, then compare the stated capacity with the washing-up you produce each day.

  • Treating a second-hand listing like the specifications for a new appliance

A listing alone won’t tell you whether the appliance works or confirm that it comes with its hoses and other accessories.

Check the model number and condition, ask to see it working if possible, and arrange collection and removal from the accommodation.

Inspecting the appliance, transporting it and sourcing any missing accessories can take extra time.

  • Ordering without checking what’s included in your furnished accommodation

According to ANIL, a dishwasher may be provided in furnished accommodation, but it is not one of the required fittings.

Check the inventory attached to your tenancy agreement and inspect the condition of any appliance already there before buying one.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need your landlord’s permission to install a dishwasher?

ANIL advises that written permission is needed if the installation involves altering the accommodation or its fittings. Simply connecting an appliance is not the same as carrying out work on the plumbing or kitchen units. Check your kitchen layout and get written confirmation before making any changes.

Is a dishwasher required in furnished accommodation?

No. ANIL lists it as an optional fitting in furnished accommodation. Check the inventory attached to your tenancy agreement to see whether an appliance is provided and, if so, what condition it is in.

What should you look for on the energy label before buying?

For a new dishwasher, compare the energy rating, capacity, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and noise level for the exact model. ADEME explains that energy and water consumption figures are given per 100 reference cycles and per reference cycle respectively.

What should you confirm before renting a dishwasher?

Make sure the documents that apply to your rental state the contract length, delivery and installation options, notice period, collection arrangements and what happens if you leave early. Also ask who is responsible for any damage. Orent’s published specific terms are explicitly intended for business customers and should not be applied as written to a private rental agreement.
