What should you check before buying?
Decide on the installation type before comparing energy labels. A 45 cm width may suit a space-constrained kitchen, whether you choose a freestanding or integrated appliance.
Freestanding
Consider this if: there’s no cabinet door panel planned, or you’d prefer an appliance with its own finished exterior.
Bear in mind: the appliance’s front will remain visible. If you plan to install it under a worktop, check whether the top can be removed for the model you’ve chosen.
Built-in or integrated
Consider this if: your kitchen has a niche and, for an integrated model, a compatible cabinet door panel.
Bear in mind: installation also depends on the door system and connections. Instructions for one model won’t necessarily apply to another.
| Criteria |
What to check |
Who is it for? |
| Installation and connections |
Compare your niche measurements with the model diagram, then check the planned door panel, door and connections. |
If my fitted kitchen has already been designed, I need to be able to install the appliance without discovering that its door or connections aren’t compatible. Around 31% of consumers rank this compatibility as their top priority. |
| Width and capacity |
Compare the available width, particularly for 45 and 60 cm formats, with the stated capacity in place settings. |
In a small kitchen, I want an appliance that fits the space and can still handle my usual washing up. Around 25% of consumers would prioritise this balance between dimensions and capacity. |
| Noise |
Check the noise emissions in dB and the noise class on the label, and consider when the dishwasher will be running. |
With an open-plan kitchen, I want to know whether the dishwasher can run while people are using the room. Around 19% of consumers put low noise first. |
| Consumption and drying |
For appliances with similar capacities, compare kWh per 100 Eco cycles, litres per Eco cycle and Eco programme duration. Check the model’s drying performance separately. |
If I run cycles often, I want to compare the water, energy and time needed without losing sight of the drying results I’m looking for. Around 25% of consumers prioritise this combination of criteria. |
According to ADEME and the European Commission, the label shows information including energy use in kWh per 100 cycles, water use in litres per cycle, Eco programme duration, capacity and noise. These figures don’t tell you everything about every programme. To compare two appliances, make sure their capacities are similar and use a consistent basis for comparison. For common formats, UFC-Que Choisir gives a capacity of 9 to 10 place settings for 45 cm models, compared with 12 to 17 for 60 cm models. Always check the capacity of the specific model.

AEG FSB34707Z, fully integrated, 14 place settings
Consider this for a kitchen designed for a fully integrated appliance. The title lists a width of 60 cm, 14 place settings and a C energy rating. Samsung DW80H72YBB0U1, built-in, 13 place settings
Worth considering for an integrated kitchen project requiring the stated capacity of 13 place settings. The title lists a 60 cm format and a B energy rating. Frequently asked questions
What should you measure before buying an integrated dishwasher?
Measure the width, height and depth of the niche, then compare them with the range allowed in the model’s installation diagram. Also check the door panel, hinge, door opening and planned connections. Instructions for one appliance, such as a Bosch model, don’t confirm that another model will fit.
How do you compare two energy labels?
First compare appliances with similar capacities, then look at the energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco programme duration and noise together. According to the European Commission, these label figures refer to the Eco programme. They don’t automatically describe other programmes or the drying results you’re looking for.
Can you put a freestanding dishwasher under a worktop?
Check the documentation for your chosen model. It should confirm whether the top can be removed and give the dimensions for this installation. Even under a worktop, a freestanding model doesn’t become an integrated appliance with a cabinet door panel.
Does a commercial warranty replace the statutory guarantee in France?
No. The French Ministry of the Economy states that the statutory guarantee of conformity is compulsory for new, used and refurbished goods sold by a business to a private individual. A commercial warranty is separate: check its terms and don’t confuse it with your statutory rights if an appliance doesn’t conform to its description.
