Who is a compact dishwasher suitable for?

Single people or couples with a small amount of daily washing-up

A six-place-setting countertop model can reduce hand-washing without taking up floor space for a 45 or 60 cm appliance, provided you are happy with a limited capacity and have the required connections available. Candy recommends this format for studios, small kitchens, couples and households that use relatively few dishes.

Small households that cook every day

If width is limited but you regularly have more than six place settings to wash, a slimline 45 cm appliance offers greater capacity. The Beko BDFS26040XA is specified for 10 place settings, but still requires around 45 cm of floor width and 60 cm of depth.

Households able to rearrange a kitchen space

A standard-size model may be worth considering when there is enough room around the appliance and the kitchen units allow for it. In Candy’s examples, a standard 14-place-setting model takes up considerably more space than a six-place-setting countertop model or a slimline 10-place-setting model.

What to check before choosing

Countertop compact model

Choose it if: your worktop can accommodate the appliance and your routine is compatible with a smaller capacity.

Trade-off: it frees up floor space, but you will need to check the water inlet, drainage and electricity supply.

Slimline 45 cm model

Choose it if: you can make room on the floor but cannot install an appliance that is 60 cm wide.

Trade-off: capacity increases, but the depth and height remain close to those of a conventional dishwasher.

Standard 60 cm model

Choose it if: floor space is available and the amount of washing-up you produce each day makes greater capacity worthwhile.

Trade-off: it offers more place settings, but takes up considerably more room in a small kitchen.

Priority What to check Your needs
Size and usable capacity Measure the width, depth and height, as well as the door clearance. Compare the number of place settings and check whether your usual plates, dishes and pans will fit in the racks. I want to keep a usable food-preparation area without having to run an extra cycle after every meal. A countertop format may offer 3 or 6 place settings, compared with 10 for a 45 cm model and 14 for some standard models.
Connections Locate the water inlet and drain, then check the hose requirements and lengths in the manual. Also make sure the electricity supply is suitable for the appliance. My appliance must be able to be installed in the intended position. A model placed on the worktop is not automatically self-sufficient when it comes to water supply or drainage.
Energy use and noise Compare capacity, kWh/100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco programme duration and noise level on the energy label. Compare appliances using the same measurement basis. In an open-plan kitchen, I want to keep noise to a minimum during meals or in the evening. ADEME states that an additional 3 dB corresponds approximately to an almost doubling of the noise.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Confusing a compact format with hassle-free installation

A countertop appliance may avoid taking up a floor-level space while still requiring suitable water, drainage and electrical connections. Discovering an incompatibility after delivery could prevent installation in the chosen location.

Measure the space, locate the water and drainage points, then check the model’s manual for connection lengths and requirements. Check the electrical circuit and do not improvise any installation work.

  • Choosing the smallest capacity without counting the cycles

A countertop appliance may be limited to six place settings, whereas the slimline and standard examples considered here accommodate 10 and 14 place settings respectively. A capacity that is too small can mean running more cycles and reduce the benefit of saving space.

Assess a full day’s washing-up, including saucepans, frying pans, reusable bottles and serving dishes. If it often exceeds six place settings, prioritise a 45 cm model.

  • Comparing only the energy-class letter

The energy class alone does not tell you about capacity, water consumption, Eco cycle duration or noise level. Two appliances may therefore suit the same requirements for capacity or quiet operation very differently.

Compare the full label: capacity, kWh/100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco duration and noise level for the model and version sold in France.

  • Using the specifications of a discontinued model for its replacement

Bosch states that the SKS6ITB00E is no longer available. The dimensions or features of an older appliance do not guarantee those of a model currently on sale.

Before choosing, check the exact reference, availability, energy label and manual of the product you are actually buying.

Brands to compare by format

Candy

Candy’s range includes six-place-setting countertop models, slimline 45 cm appliances and standard models, making it possible to compare several formats from the same manufacturer.

  • Candy states that the CP 6E51LS is a six-place-setting countertop model measuring 550 × 501 × 443 mm and requiring a direct connection to the water inlet.
  • The CF 4C6F0W, specified for 14 place settings, measures 597 × 598 × 850 mm: its capacity comes with standard floor-standing dimensions.

Beko

Beko is worth considering for a freestanding 45 cm compromise when your kitchen can accommodate a floor-standing appliance but not the width of a standard model.

  • Beko specifies the BDFS26040XA at 45 cm wide, with 10 place settings, 8,9 L of water per Eco cycle, 59 kWh/100 cycles and 44 dB.
  • Reducing the width does not remove the need for approximately 60 cm of depth or for floor space.

Bosch

Bosch distinguishes freestanding countertop dishwashers from compact integrated models, a useful distinction when comparing dimensions, programmes and installation requirements.

  • Bosch states that its small countertop dishwashers measure approximately 45 × 55,1 × 50 cm.
  • The manufacturer specifies that the SKS6ITB00E is no longer available; do not assume its specifications apply to a current equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Does a compact countertop dishwasher work without a water inlet?

Not necessarily. For the Candy CP 6E51LS, Candy specifies a direct connection to the water inlet. Also check the drainage requirements in the manual for your chosen model: “countertop” describes the format, not a complete absence of connections.

Which electrical socket should you have in a French kitchen?

Promotelec states that the dishwasher socket should be on a dedicated circuit and located close to the water inlets and drains required by the appliance. If the installation is old or questionable, have it checked by a qualified professional.

How do you compare the consumption of two dishwashers?

Compare the figures on the energy label using the same basis: class, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco cycle duration, capacity and noise. European energy-labelling regulations provide for measurements or calculations using the Eco programme loaded to its rated capacity.

Is a six-place-setting compact model suitable for two people?

It can be suitable if you produce a small amount of washing-up at each meal, are happy to run cycles more frequently and do not regularly use large serving dishes. Candy mentions couples and small kitchens for this format; compare the manufacturer’s guidance with your own cooking routine.

Why does noise matter in an open-plan kitchen?

Noise levels become important when the kitchen opens onto the living area. ADEME states that an additional three decibels corresponds approximately to an almost doubling of the noise, so compare the dB rating and the sound class on the label.
