Which households are these options suited to?

Households with lots of washing-up after meals

If pots and pans pile up alongside the plates every day, look at the stated capacity as well as the basket layout. The Beko ranges we reviewed include models with different capacities in 45 and 60 cm sizes, but the usable space still needs to be assessed for the specific model.

Households with limited kitchen space

A narrow alcove or space means you should check the width, height, depth and connections before settling on a capacity. Bosch and Beko offer 45 cm models; check the installation type and fitting dimensions for each model individually.

Households focused on everyday use and repairability

When comparing regular wash cycles, ADEME recommends checking the energy use per 100 cycles and water use per cycle on the energy label. In France, the Ministry of the Economy says dishwashers are covered by the repairability index. Consider this separately from washing performance.

What sets the different sizes apart?

Start with the dimensions and connections needed for installation, then check the capacity and baskets against the loads you usually wash. Usage figures can then help you choose between compatible models.

Criterion What to check Who it suits
Capacity and loading Compare the stated place settings and basket layout with your plates, pans and bulky containers. When meals leave lots of washing-up, I want to load larger items without running extra cycles. Around 36% of consumers put loading capacity first.
Space and installation Measure the width, height and depth; check the installation instructions against your connections and, for an integrated model, the niche and cabinet door. In a kitchen with limited space, I start by checking what can actually be fitted and connected. This compatibility is the top priority for around 29% of consumers.
Energy use and repairability Check the Eco programme’s kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle, then look up the repairability index for the model sold in France. If I run cycles often, I want to compare energy and water use on the same basis and take repairability into account. This is the top priority for around 21% of consumers.
Noise and cycle duration Compare the stated noise level and Eco programme duration; check the instructions for other programmes you’re considering. With an open-plan kitchen or specific washing times, I need to organise cycles without too much noise. Around 14% of consumers prioritise noise and duration above all else.

ADEME explains the information on the energy label. Under European Regulation 2019/2017, published on EUR-Lex, regulated figures for energy use, duration and noise are based on the Eco programme. They may not reflect a quick or intensive cycle.

What should you watch out for before ordering?

  • Choosing based on width alone

A 45 cm model may fit in a narrow kitchen but might not hold your household’s dishes as well as you’d hoped. Equally, a 60 cm width doesn’t guarantee that the height, depth or connections will be suitable.

Measure the entire space and check the baskets and technical dimensions of the model you’ve chosen.

  • Assuming Eco figures apply to every programme

Under European Regulation 2019/2017, regulated figures are based on the Eco programme. They don’t tell you how much energy another cycle will use or how long it will take.

Use the energy label to compare models on the same basis, then check the instructions for the programmes you plan to use.

  • Ordering a built-in model without checking the space

Matching the width isn’t enough if the installation height, cabinet door, hinges or connections aren’t right for your kitchen plans.

Before you buy, compare the model’s installation plan with the measurements and fittings in your home.

An incompatible niche or cabinet door may mean modifying the unit or arranging installation work.

  • Using the repairability index as your only criterion

The Ministry of the Economy describes the index as a way to compare how repairable products covered by the scheme in France are. On its own, it doesn’t tell you about capacity, noise or installation.

Consider it alongside the energy label, instructions and the features your kitchen needs.

Brands to consider, depending on the model

Bosch

Bosch Home Appliances France offers freestanding dishwashers in both 45 and 60 cm sizes.

  • Its dimensions guide reminds you to measure the width, height and depth.
  • Compare the capacity, noise level and programmes on the chosen model’s product page; don’t assume them from its width alone.

Beko

Beko France offers 45 and 60 cm models, both freestanding and built-in, depending on the model.

  • Product pages for some models include the capacity and installation dimensions.
  • Check the documents for the exact model: capacity, installation and features vary across the range.

Miele

Miele France distinguishes between freestanding, integrated and fully integrated appliances, including 45 cm models.

  • Understanding the different installation types can help you plan your kitchen.
  • Check the niche dimensions and basket features for each model.

Frequently asked questions

What should I compare on a dishwasher’s energy label?

Compare the energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, capacity, Eco programme duration and noise level and rating. ADEME explains these indicators, and European Regulation 2019/2017, published on EUR-Lex, links regulated figures to the Eco programme. They don’t directly describe a quick or intensive cycle.

Does the repairability index apply to dishwashers in France?

Yes. The Ministry of the Economy says dishwashers are among the products covered in France. The index helps you compare how repairable they are; it doesn’t replace checking the capacity, dimensions or installation requirements.

What should I check before installing a dishwasher?

Check the model’s instructions and installation plan against the dimensions of the space, water inlet, waste outlet and electrical connection. For an integrated model, check the niche and cabinet door too. If you’re unsure about adapting the connections, ask a qualified professional to assess your home.

Is a 45 cm dishwasher big enough for a small household that cooks often?

Not necessarily: how often you eat at home and how much room your pans and dishes take up matter just as much as the number of people in your household. Beko France’s examples show that capacity varies between 45 cm models; compare the baskets with your dishes and consider how often you’re happy to run a cycle.
