Who are these sizes suited to?

You’re sensitive to noise in an open-plan kitchen

If you use your living room while a cycle is running or plan to run the appliance in the evening, compare the stated noise level and bear in mind that how loud it seems also depends on the room. In its guide to quiet dishwashers, UFC-Que Choisir highlights how much noise matters in a shared living space.

You have a small kitchen with no space on the floor

A worktop appliance could be the answer if you’re short of floor space, but remember to allow for the area it takes up and the room needed to open its door. UFC-Que Choisir describes compact 6-place-setting models as space-saving appliances designed to sit on a worktop.

You’re short of floor space but have a lot of washing up

If a mini appliance would mean running too many loads, a slimline 45 cm model may be worth considering, provided you have a suitable space for a floor-standing appliance. Check the capacity and dimensions of each model.

What should you check before choosing?

First rule out any sizes that won’t fit in the available space. Then weigh up capacity and noise before checking the connections and door opening space. The European Commission includes noise emissions among the information shown on dishwasher energy labels.

What matters What to check Who it matters most to
Noise in the living space Stated noise level in dB(A) and the noise class for the exact model. If I’m staying in the living room during a cycle, I want to compare noise levels rather than assume a compact appliance will be quiet. Around 36% of consumers prioritise a quiet living space.
Space actually available Height × width × depth, door clearance and room for the hoses. When the kitchen is already cluttered, I need to work out where the appliance can go without getting in the way of everyday use. Around 29% of consumers prioritise a small footprint.
Suitable capacity Stated number of place settings, basket layout and the size of your usual dishes. If I regularly wash plates, saucepans or utensils, the capacity needs to match what I actually load. Around 21% of consumers put the amount of washing up first.
Connections and fit The model’s instructions, water supply or manual filling, drainage, space dimensions and door panel if required. If my home needs a particular installation or a matching door panel, I want to avoid choosing an appliance that won’t suit the layout. Around 14% of consumers prioritise an installation that is straightforward and compatible.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing

  • Assuming compact means quiet

Compact describes the size, not the noise level. In an open-plan room, the sound of a cycle can matter even if the appliance takes up very little space.

Once you’ve checked that the model can be installed, compare the stated noise levels of the exact models.

  • Measuring the width only

The depth, height, hoses and door clearance can all prevent installation or make loading awkward.

Check all three dimensions and the clearances required for the model and its installation.

  • Thinking a water tank means you don’t need drainage

With Bob, the tank means you don’t need a fixed water supply, but the used water still has to be drained away.

Check where the drain hose can go and whether its route will work in your kitchen.

  • Choosing an integrated model without checking the door panel

Whirlpool states that the decorative door panel for the WSIO 3O34 PFE X is not included.

Check what’s included and whether the appliance will fit your kitchen.

You’ll need to allow for a compatible door panel if one isn’t included.

Brands to consider by size

Daan Tech

Bob is an example of a worktop appliance for a very small space, particularly where there’s no fixed water supply nearby.

  • Daan Tech lists a 4 L tank and dimensions of 34 × 49 × 49 cm for Bob.
  • Its stated depth with the door open is 83 cm. You’ll also need to allow for drainage. These specifications apply to Bob, not all compact dishwashers.

Electrolux

The ESA63200SX is an example of a 45 cm freestanding dishwasher for a kitchen where there’s room for a floor-standing appliance.

  • Electrolux lists 10 place settings, 46 dB(A) and dimensions of 850 × 446 × 615 mm for this model.
  • Its narrower width doesn’t mean you can skip checking the height, depth and connections. These details don’t describe the whole range.

Beko

The DVS05030W is a 45 cm freestanding model worth considering if you’re looking for a floor-standing appliance with a narrower width.

  • Beko lists 10 place settings and 49 dB(A) for this model.
  • The stated noise level alone can’t tell you how loud the appliance will seem in a particular room, and it doesn’t apply to every Beko dishwasher.

Whirlpool

The WSIO 3O34 PFE X is an example of a 45 cm integrated dishwasher for a kitchen with a suitable space.

  • Whirlpool lists 10 place settings and 44 dB for this model.
  • The decorative door panel isn’t included. The brand’s claims about washing performance and quietness aren’t independent test results.

Bosch

The SPH4HL802E is an example of a 45 cm fully integrated dishwasher with a VarioHinge hinge.

  • Bosch lists dimensions of 815 × 448 × 550 mm and a noise class of B for this model.
  • Check that the cabinet space and door panel will fit. The dimensions and class apply to this model, not the whole range.

Frequently asked questions

How can you compare the noise and energy use of two dishwashers?

Compare the information on the European energy label, including noise emissions, electricity use per 100 eco-programme cycles, water use per cycle, programme duration and capacity. The European Commission explains these indicators; they can’t predict how loud the appliance will seem in your room or the results of every programme.

Can a compact dishwasher with a tank work without drainage?

Not in Bob’s case: according to Daan Tech, its 4 L tank means you don’t need a fixed water supply, but the appliance still has to drain the used water. Check the instructions for the model you’re considering and make sure there’s a suitable route for the drain hose.

What should you do to maintain a dishwasher?

Follow the instructions for setting up, adjusting and maintaining your model. UFC-Que Choisir recommends, in particular, adjusting the water softener setting to suit the water hardness.

What rights and information should you check when buying in France?

According to the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the legal guarantee of conformity is compulsory when a private individual buys goods from a professional seller, whether the goods are new, second-hand or refurbished. The Ministry also states that the repairability index is compulsory for the dishwashers it applies to. The index provides information about repairability; it doesn’t guarantee a product’s lifespan.

Does an integrated dishwasher come with a kitchen door panel?

Not necessarily: Whirlpool states that the decorative door panel for the WSIO 3O34 PFE X isn’t included. Check the compatible door panel, what’s included and the dimensions required for your chosen model.
