What should you compare?
First choose a size that suits your kitchen and the amount of washing-up you produce. Then compare the energy label details for the models that are still in the running.
Freestanding
Consider this if: you want a standalone appliance that doesn’t need a unit door.
Bear in mind: the appliance will be visible, and its position must allow for the necessary connections.
Integrated
Consider this if: you have a suitable space and want the appliance to blend in with your kitchen units.
Bear in mind: the width alone doesn’t confirm that the space, door and unit door are compatible.
Compact
Consider this if: there isn’t room for a standard-sized appliance and you only need to wash a small number of items at a time.
Bear in mind: if it doesn’t have enough capacity for your household, you may need to run more cycles.

What to check |
To suit your needs |
| Capacity |
Compare the stated place setting capacity, space for large dishes and adjustable baskets. Check whether one load can hold the dishes from a typical day. |
After several meals at home, I’d prefer to fit the pans and plates in without having to run an extra cycle. |
| Size |
Measure the width, height and depth of the space. For an integrated model, also check the niche, door, unit door and connections against the installation plan. |
Space is limited in my kitchen, so I need to find a model that fits properly without choosing a compact one that’s too small for my dishes. |
| Eco programme |
According to ADEME and the European Commission, the energy label shows energy use in kWh per 100 cycles, water use per cycle and the Eco programme duration. Compare these figures on the same basis, model by model. |
I want to plan loads around mealtimes without mistaking the duration of a quick programme for that of the Eco cycle. |
| Noise |
Check the noise emissions in dB(A) and the noise class on the label. If a product listing gives a figure for a particular programme, make sure you take that into account when comparing models. |
In an open-plan kitchen, the cycle might run while we’re using the room. |
| Repairability |
For a domestic dishwasher covered by the scheme in France, check the model’s repairability index and the information available about its spare parts. |
As the appliance will be used regularly, I want to take its repairability into account before choosing. |

Frequently asked questions
What should I compare on a dishwasher’s energy label?
Compare the energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres of water per cycle, place setting capacity, Eco programme duration and noise emissions for the exact model. ADEME and the European Commission explain that the consumption figures shown are based on reference cycles; they don’t apply indiscriminately to every programme.
Is the Eco programme always quick?
No: check the duration on the model’s energy label. If you need to run loads one after another or start the appliance at a particular time, compare the Eco programme duration separately from the quick programmes.
Is a compact dishwasher enough for several meals a day?
It depends on the dishes you need to wash and the model’s capacity. A compact dishwasher can solve a space problem, but check that its baskets can hold your plates and serving dishes without making you run multiple cycles.
How can I check whether an integrated dishwasher will fit in my kitchen?
Compare the model’s installation plan with the width, height and depth of the niche, then check the connections, unit door and door clearance. A stated width of 45 or 60 cm isn’t enough to confirm that it will fit.
Does the repairability index apply to dishwashers in France?
Yes, for domestic dishwashers covered by the scheme. The Ministry for Ecological Transition lists dishwashers among the product categories concerned; the decree of 22 April 2022 applies to mains-powered domestic appliances, including integrated and built-in models. Check the index for the model you’re considering, but don’t mistake it for a guarantee that repairs will be straightforward.
