Who is this choice for?

Households keeping their fitted kitchen

If your old dishwasher was fitted into a space or sat beneath a worktop, check the installation type, dimensions and door panel before comparing features. Bosch’s built-in ranges illustrate the differences between integration options and stated width.

Households mindful of noise and energy use

If you run frequent cycles or your kitchen opens onto your living space, compare the water and energy consumption and noise figures for each model. ADEME explains that energy is shown in kWh per 100 cycles and water in litres per reference cycle.

Small homes and smaller loads of washing-up

A compact model is worth considering if space is limited and its capacity suits the amount of washing-up you build up between cycles. For example, Electrolux offers a 55 cm built-in compact model with capacity for 6 place settings. Check the dimensions and capacity of the model you’re considering.

Which criteria should you check first?

The installation type determines whether the appliance will fit the space you have in mind. Once you’ve checked that, compare its capacity and energy label figures with how often you do a wash.

Freestanding

Consider this if: you don’t need to hide the appliance behind a kitchen door panel.

Bear in mind: the appliance will be on show, and its overall dimensions need to suit the space.

Built-in

Consider this if: you have a suitable space and want the appliance to blend in with your kitchen units.

Bear in mind: your choice will also depend on the available height and the type of door panel and door.

Compact

Consider this if: space is limited and you don’t have a large volume of washing-up.

Bear in mind: a smaller capacity may mean running more frequent cycles.

Criteria What to check Who is this important for?
Installation Installation type, exact dimensions and, for a built-in model, whether the space and door panel are compatible. If I’m keeping my fitted kitchen, the appliance needs to fit in its space and its door must open and close properly. Around 36% of consumers rank this compatibility as their top requirement.
Capacity and space Number of place settings, model dimensions and the space available for your usual load of washing-up. In a small home, I’m looking for a compact model that won’t force me to run a cycle as soon as washing-up starts to build up. Around 29% of consumers prioritise a capacity that suits their available space.
Water, energy and noise kWh per 100 cycles, litres per Eco cycle and noise level in dB; also compare the Eco programme duration. If I wash frequently or have an open-plan kitchen, I want to understand the running costs and noise levels. This is the main concern for around 21% of consumers.
Repairability and collection The model’s repairability index and the arrangements for taking away your old appliance when you place your order. I want to be able to assess how repairable my next dishwasher is and arrange for my broken one to be taken away. Around 14% of consumers prioritise these arrangements.

According to ADEME, dishwasher energy and water consumption figures are shown on the energy label. European Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2017 sets reference measurements using the Eco programme at rated capacity. These figures make it easier to compare models, but they don’t describe every programme or load.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a built-in model based only on its stated width

A width of 60 cm doesn’t guarantee that the appliance will fit in the space or that its door will work with your kitchen. Bosch’s built-in models also differ in how they integrate with your kitchen units.

Measure the usable space, then check the exact model’s documentation for its dimensions, height beneath the worktop, door panel and clearance needed for the door to open.

  • Comparing energy ratings alone

The energy rating letter doesn’t tell you how much water the appliance uses, how noisy it is or how long the Eco programme takes. Nor do the standardised Eco programme figures automatically represent the other programmes.

According to ADEME, energy consumption is measured in kWh per 100 cycles and water consumption in litres per reference cycle. Consider these figures alongside capacity, Eco programme duration and noise level.

  • Confusing repairability with durability

The French Ministry responsible for the Ecological Transition lists dishwashers among the product categories covered by the repairability index. The index doesn’t tell you how noisy the appliance is, how much it consumes or whether it will fit in your space.

Check the repairability score for the model you’re considering, then look separately at its energy label and installation requirements.

  • Leaving arrangements for your old appliance until delivery day

Plan to have your old, broken appliance taken away when your new one is delivered or collected. Ecosystem describes a “one-for-one” collection service when you buy an equivalent new appliance.

When you place your order, check how to request this service and where you’ll need to leave your old dishwasher.

Frequently asked questions

Should you consider repairing your dishwasher before replacing it?

Yes. Check whether it can be repaired before confirming that you want to replace it. ADEME says that large domestic appliances can often be repaired. If you decide to replace yours, you can then choose a new model to suit your kitchen and how you use it.

What can you compare using a dishwasher energy label?

You can compare the energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres of water per cycle, capacity, Eco programme duration and noise level, among other things. ADEME says that dishwasher energy labels are available online and in shops.

Do the energy label figures apply to every programme?

No. European Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2017 sets out measurements or calculations based on the Eco programme at rated capacity. Use these figures to compare models on a like-for-like basis, but don’t assume they apply in the same way to every quick or intensive cycle.

Which index should you check to assess a dishwasher’s repairability?

In France, check the repairability index for the model you’re considering. It is shown as a score out of 10. The French Ministry responsible for the Ecological Transition lists dishwashers among the product categories covered by the index. It complements the energy label, but doesn’t replace it.

How can you arrange for your old dishwasher to be taken away?

Check the collection arrangements when you order your new appliance. Ecosystem describes free “one-for-one” collection when you buy an equivalent new appliance. Confirm with the seller what’s available for delivery or collection, and where you’ll need to leave your old dishwasher.
