Who are these options for?

Households that need their kitchen back in working order

If your appliance has broken down, a diagnosis can help you work out whether the fault lies with the appliance, its installation or the way it’s being used before you decide between repair and replacement.

People replacing their dishwasher

You can compare capacity, water and energy use, noise levels and the length of the Eco programme, while also checking the repairability index for the model you’re considering. ADEME sets out these criteria when choosing a dishwasher.

People considering a second-hand or refurbished appliance

Pay particular attention to the exact model, its condition, the connections it needs and the seller’s status. In France, the protection that applies to a purchase from a business differs from that for a private sale, as the Ministry of the Economy explains.

How do you compare the options?

After a household appliance breaks down, first work out whether the problem lies with the appliance or its installation. If you need a replacement, start by choosing a format that fits your kitchen, then compare the features that matter in everyday use.

Have it repaired

Consider this: when a diagnosis identifies a fault with the appliance and a repair could get it working again.

Bear in mind: the Repair Bonus does not cover every fault. According to ecosystem, you’ll need to check factors including whether the appliance is still under warranty, the cause of the fault and whether the repairer has the QualiRépar accreditation.

Buy new

Consider this: if a repair won’t meet your needs, or you need a different format or capacity.

Bear in mind: compare the reference programme’s consumption figures alongside its duration; ADEME points out that the Eco programme can be long.

Choose second-hand or refurbished

Consider this: if an appliance with clearly described condition, model and installation requirements meets your needs.

Bear in mind: according to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, these appliances are not subject to the requirement to display a repairability index.

What matters What to check Who this matters to
Whether it can be repaired Ask for details of the cause of the fault and the work required. For the Repair Bonus in France, check whether you’re eligible with a QualiRépar-accredited repairer, following ecosystem’s guidance. If the fault can be fixed without replacing the appliance, I want to know exactly what the repair will restore. Around 29% of consumers put this first.
Whether it fits your kitchen Check the installation type, the dimensions of the space, the connections and the capacity in place settings of the model you’re considering. When replacing my appliance, the new model needs to fit in my kitchen and handle the loads I usually wash. This is the top priority for around 29% of consumers.
Energy and water use, and noise On the energy label, compare kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, the Eco programme duration and dB on a like-for-like basis, as ADEME recommends. In an open-plan kitchen, or when the appliance runs at quieter times, I consider noise just as much as water and energy use. Around 24% of consumers prioritise these everyday-use features.
Condition of a second-hand appliance Ask for the model number, a description of any known faults and the accessories included, then check the seller’s status and the installation requirements. Before choosing a second-hand or refurbished appliance, I want to be able to assess its condition and know who to contact if something is wrong. This is the main concern for around 18% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid after a breakdown

  • Assuming every fault qualifies for the Repair Bonus

According to ecosystem, the scheme has conditions relating to factors such as the appliance’s warranty, the cause of the fault and the repairer carrying out the work. A problem linked to the installation or how the appliance is used may be excluded.

Ask for a diagnosis that explains the cause of the fault, and confirm that you’re eligible before choosing this option.

  • Comparing new appliances on energy rating alone

The label also shows water use, energy consumption per 100 cycles, capacity, noise levels and the Eco programme duration. These figures help you assess different needs.

Compare the same measurements across models that fit your space, then check whether the cycle duration works for you.

  • Taking the repairability index as a promise of longevity

The index rates repairability against criteria such as documentation, dismantling and spare parts. On its own, it doesn’t tell you how well the appliance washes or how often it may break down in future.

Check the score for the exact model, alongside its energy label and installation requirements.

  • Expecting the same information for a refurbished appliance as for a new one

In France, second-hand and refurbished appliances are not subject to the requirement to display a repairability index, according to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition. The Ministry of the Economy explains that the legal guarantee of conformity applies to sales from a business to a private individual.

Check the stated condition, accessories, installation requirements and seller’s status. If you’re buying from a business, keep the appliance description and your invoice.

Brands to consider, model by model

Bosch

Worth considering model by model if the repairability index and installation type are influencing your choice of replacement.

  • Bosch says it displays repairability indices for its dishwashers.
  • Check the score and energy label for the model you choose: a brand-wide statement doesn’t tell you about every model in its range.

Siemens

Worth considering if the installation format and access to spare parts matter to you.

  • Siemens says original spare parts and accessories are available for up to 15 years for its large domestic appliances.
  • Check which parts are covered and the conditions that apply to the specific dishwasher before interpreting this statement.

Miele

Worth considering if the stated availability of spare parts is a factor in your decision.

  • Miele says it makes spare parts available for up to 15 years after mass production ends, and lists parts for dishwashers.
  • This stated policy doesn’t guarantee the reliability of the model you choose or mean that every fault can be repaired.

Beko

Worth checking model by model if you want to see the details behind a repairability index.

  • In its product information dated 18 April 2025, Beko gives the BDIS16030 a repairability score of 7.9/10.
  • This score applies to the BDIS16030; look up the score for the model you’re actually considering.

Frequently asked questions

Does every dishwasher fault qualify for the Repair Bonus?

No. In France, ecosystem excludes certain faults, including those linked to the installation, the operating environment or improper use. Whether the appliance is still under warranty and whether you use a QualiRépar-accredited repairer are also part of the scheme’s conditions. Ask for the cause of the fault to be confirmed before considering this support.

What does the repairability index tell me about a new dishwasher?

In France, it gives the model a repairability score out of 10. According to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, the score is displayed in shops and online for the dishwashers covered by the requirement. It takes factors such as documentation, dismantling and spare parts into account; it doesn’t guarantee a long lifespan or good washing performance.

Does a second-hand dishwasher have to display a repairability index?

No. According to the French Ministry for Ecological Transition, the French requirement to calculate and display an index doesn’t apply to second-hand, reused or refurbished appliances. Instead, check the exact model, its stated condition, the accessories included and whether it’s compatible with your installation.

What protection applies to a refurbished dishwasher sold by a business?

In France, the legal guarantee of conformity applies to refurbished goods sold by a business to a private individual, according to the Ministry of the Economy. Keep your invoice and the appliance description so you can refer to the features promised if a fault develops.
