Who is this option for?

Renters without a dedicated water supply

A model with a water tank can save you from needing a fixed water supply, but you’ll still need to drain the waste water and check the socket requirements and the model’s instructions. Daan Tech explains these requirements for Bob.

Small households with everyday washing-up

Before choosing between a mini model and a plumbed-in compact dishwasher, compare its stated capacity with the plates, glasses and saucepans you use regularly. Daan Tech and Candy France offer models in different sizes and capacities.

Renters with existing connections

You could consider a freestanding model or a full-size dishwasher if the space and connections are suitable, but don’t assume you’re allowed to make permanent changes to the property. ANIL distinguishes installing an appliance from making alterations to a property or its fixtures.

What to check before buying

Mini dishwasher with a water tank

Consider this if: there’s no usable fixed water supply, but you have a stable surface, a suitable socket and a practical way to drain the water.

Bear in mind: you’ll need to fill the tank and arrange drainage each time you use it. Make sure the capacity suits your washing-up.

Plumbed-in compact dishwasher

Consider this if: there’s room for it on your worktop and a suitable water supply, drain and power connection are already available.

Bear in mind: it takes up some of your worktop and won’t be suitable without compatible connections.

Freestanding or integrated dishwasher

Consider this if: the dimensions, door clearance and existing connections suit the appliance. An integrated model also needs a compatible housing unit.

Bear in mind: it takes up more floor space. You’ll need your landlord’s written consent before making any changes to the rented property or its fixtures.

Washing up by hand

Consider this if: there’s no suitable space or safe way to drain the water, or you don’t have enough washing-up to justify installing an appliance.

Bear in mind: washing up takes time and means you can’t leave the job to an appliance.

Criteria What to check before buying Who it suits
Water supply and drainage Check whether the model uses a tank or a fixed water supply, and work out where the drain hose will go. A water tank doesn’t remove the need to drain the waste water. If I can’t use a fixed water supply, I look for a reversible option with a practical way to drain the water; around 36% of consumers put this first.
Everyday capacity Compare the stated place setting capacity and basket layout with the dishes and utensils you usually use. A place setting count doesn’t guarantee that every saucepan will fit. If I want to wash everyday dishes without running several cycles, the usable capacity matters more than a figure on its own; around 29% of consumers prioritise this.
Space requirements Measure the width, depth and height, then check the door clearance and that the surface is stable. Don’t rely on the width alone. If I need to keep my worktop and walkways usable, I measure the whole space; around 21% of consumers prioritise the space available.
Noise and everyday use Check the label for noise levels. ADEME says energy consumption is expressed in kWh per 100 reference cycles and water consumption in litres per cycle; compare figures on the same basis. For an open-plan kitchen or frequent use, I check the noise level and stated consumption before choosing; around 14% of consumers prioritise this everyday comfort.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming no water supply means no drainage is needed

A model with a water tank can save you from needing a fixed water supply, but the waste water still needs to be drained. Daan Tech explains that Bob’s tank is filled separately and that its drain hose is used to remove waste water.

Before buying, work out where the water will drain and check the set-up recommended in the model’s instructions.

Filling the tank and arranging safe drainage take time every time you use it.

  • Choosing based only on place settings or width

The stated capacity doesn’t guarantee that your larger dishes or saucepans will fit. Candy France’s listing for the CP 6E51LS states six place settings, but gives two different heights: 443 mm in the heading and 595 mm in the text.

Compare the basket layout with a typical load and check the model’s dimensions in its documentation before measuring a housing unit or shelf.

A poorly suited appliance can take up valuable preparation space or leave you running several cycles.

  • Assuming freestanding installation means you can make alterations

Installing an appliance without making changes isn’t the same as permanently altering a rented property or its fixtures. ANIL says you need your landlord’s written consent to make these kinds of changes.

If your plans involve alterations, get your landlord’s written consent before you start.

You may be asked to put the property back as it was if you make unauthorised changes.

Brands to consider for different set-ups

Daan Tech

Bob is an example of a mini dishwasher with a water tank, designed for smaller loads when there’s no fixed water supply.

  • Daan Tech says Bob has a 4 L water tank and can also be connected to a compatible water supply.
  • A drain hose is still required. Check the instructions for the version you choose and make sure you have a suitable surface; these details alone don’t determine how well it washes.

Candy

The Rapidò CP 6E51LS is an example of a plumbed-in compact dishwasher, stated to have six place settings.

  • Candy France says this model connects directly to the water supply.
  • The listing gives two different heights: 443 mm in the heading and 595 mm in the text. Check the model documentation to confirm its dimensions before buying.

Bosch

The freestanding compact SKS6ITB00E can be used as a reference point when comparing sizes where connections are already in place.

  • Bosch lists this model as a freestanding compact dishwasher.
  • Bosch says the SKS6ITB00E is no longer available, so it isn’t a current buying option and doesn’t represent the whole range.

Frequently asked questions

Does a water tank mean I don’t need to connect the dishwasher?

Some models can use a tank instead of a fixed water supply, but they still need electricity and a way to drain the waste water. Daan Tech describes Bob as having a tank and a drain hose; check the instructions for the version you choose to see how it should be set up.

What should I measure before ordering a freestanding model?

Measure the space and the clearance needed to open the door, then check that the surface is stable and plan where the drain hose will go. For Bob, Daan Tech specifies a 1,50 m drain hose and a minimum load capacity of 25 kg for a wall shelf; these figures don’t apply to other models.

Can I make permanent changes to the plumbing or a cupboard in a rented kitchen?

According to ANIL, you need your landlord’s written consent to alter a rented property or its fixtures. This doesn’t mean that you always need consent to put in and remove an appliance without making any changes; consider the specific work involved and your tenancy agreement.

How can I compare energy use and noise levels?

The European label includes information such as electricity consumption in kWh per 100 cycles, water consumption per cycle, the eco programme duration, capacity and noise level. ADEME explains the reference basis for these consumption figures; they won’t predict your bill, which also depends on how often you use the appliance.

What should I check about repairs and warranties?

According to the French Ministry of the Economy, dishwashers are among the product categories covered by the repairability index. When you buy from a professional seller as a private consumer, the statutory guarantee of conformity applies; the ministry distinguishes this from any commercial guarantee offered by the seller or manufacturer.
