Who is this choice for?

Housemates and households with different mealtimes

When several people use dishes at different times, consider how many place settings build up before the next cycle. Programme duration and the option to delay the start can also help keep clean dishes available.

People with an open-plan kitchen and living room

If the appliance runs near where you relax, talk or work, compare its stated noise level and noise class. UFC-Que Choisir highlights how important this is in an open-plan kitchen.

Households short on space

A compact model, a 45 cm model and a 60 cm model all need different amounts of space. Measure the available area and match the capacity to the dishes you get through, remembering to check the connections too.

Which criteria should you compare?

First rule out any sizes that won’t fit your kitchen. Then compare capacity, noise and eco programme figures on a like-for-like basis.

Criteria What to check What you need
Space and installation Measure the height, width and depth, then check the water inlet, drainage and electrical supply. For an integrated model, also check the housing space and door front. I need to be able to install the appliance in the intended spot, whether it’s compact, freestanding or integrated.
Capacity Compare the stated number of place settings for the eco programme with the dishes that build up before the next cycle. A compact model with 6 place settings and a wider appliance aren’t designed for the same load. For a shared household, we need enough room for the dishes that actually build up, rather than choosing based only on the number of people in the home.
Noise Compare the stated dB and noise class on the label for each model. Don’t assume the noise level from the width or installation type. In an open-plan kitchen, I want to be able to start a cycle without disrupting activities in the living room. UFC-Que Choisir specifically highlights noise as a consideration for this type of kitchen.
Water and energy On the energy label, compare water use per eco cycle and energy use per 100 cycles, taking capacity into account. ADEME presents these figures as useful points of comparison when choosing a dishwasher. I want to compare consumption figures on the same basis, rather than assume one size always uses less than another.
Planning your cycles Check the eco programme duration and, separately, the conditions for the short programme in the model specifications. The European Commission says the eco programme is subject to specific requirements; its figures don’t automatically describe the short cycle. If the dishes need to be used again soon, I need to know what the short programme can do. Loads that can be planned in advance can follow a different routine.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Choosing “compact” or “integrated” without considering the load

A compact model may have 6 place settings, while an integrated model needs a compatible space. Size alone won’t tell you about noise or consumption.

Measure the space, estimate how many dishes build up between cycles and check the connections before making your choice.

  • Applying eco programme figures to the short cycle

Different programmes are designed for different uses. The eco figures on the label don’t tell you that the short cycle has the same duration or uses the same amount of energy and water.

Use the eco programme to compare energy labels, then check the specifications for the model’s other cycles separately.

  • Comparing only the number of place settings

In an open-plan kitchen, noise is still an important consideration even if the capacity is right for you. UFC-Que Choisir draws particular attention to this.

Compare the dB and noise class for the models you’re considering, then choose a capacity that suits how often you run a cycle.

  • Treating integration as purely a matter of appearance

The housing space, door front, plinth and connections all need to suit the appliance. Bosch recommends using a professional to install an integrated dishwasher.

Compare your kitchen measurements with the product specifications, and ask for installation advice if you’re unsure whether it will fit.

A guide to the brands

These examples show different sizes to compare; the features of one model don’t apply to every product in its brand.

Bosch

The freestanding range includes 45 and 60 cm models, giving you two widths to consider depending on the space available.

  • Bosch lists dimensions of 845 × 450 × 600 mm for the SPS2HMI02E and 845 × 600 × 600 mm for the SMS4HMW08E.
  • These dimensions alone aren’t enough to compare noise, capacity or consumption. Check the specifications for each model.

Miele

The G 5611 SCU Active is worth considering if you’re looking for an integrated appliance and want to be able to delay the start.

  • Miele states that this model has a noise level of 45 dB and a delay-start option of up to 24 hours.
  • Check that the housing space is suitable and that the capacity meets your needs. The stated noise level applies to this model, not the whole range.

Candy

The brand offers both a freestanding compact model and a narrow integrated one, which can help you compare two different space-saving options.

  • The CP 6E51LS compact model measures 595 mm high, 550 mm wide and 501 mm deep; the integrated CI0C7SB0FA has 10 place settings and is 448 mm wide.
  • Check the connections, as well as the noise, water and energy figures for the model you choose.

Electrolux

The ESL2500RO is an example of a fully integrated compact model to consider when space and the housing dimensions are key factors.

  • Electrolux lists this model as 55 cm wide, with 6 place settings and a noise level of 49 dB.
  • Consider whether its 6 place settings are enough for the dishes you generate in a shared household, and check that its dimensions fit the intended space.

Frequently asked questions

Is the eco programme suitable when several people are waiting for clean dishes?

It works well for loads the household can plan ahead, but its duration may be inconvenient if you need the dishes again soon. The eco programme is the benchmark for the figures on the energy label. For the model you’re considering, check the short programme’s duration, conditions of use and consumption separately.

What should you check before choosing a compact, freestanding or integrated model?

Measure the space and check the water inlet, drainage and electrical supply available for the appliance. For an integrated model, also check the housing space and door front. Bosch recommends using a professional for this type of installation.

How do you compare the noise levels of two dishwashers for an open-plan kitchen?

Compare the stated dB and noise class on each model’s energy label. ADEME says the label provides information about the noise level, while UFC-Que Choisir highlights how important noise is when the kitchen opens onto the living space. Neither capacity nor installation type is a substitute for this comparison.
