Buying priorities
Freestanding
Choose this if: you do not have a housing unit or door front to fit, but can reserve floor space near the connections.
Bear in mind: you still need to measure the width, height and depth; a 45 cm model takes up less space than a 60 cm model, but usually has a smaller capacity.
Countertop compact
Choose this if: space is genuinely limited and your household is happy with a small amount of washing-up per cycle.
Bear in mind: the smaller footprint also limits capacity, and you still need to check the water supply, drainage, electricity and positioning.
Integrated
Choose this if: a kitchen housing unit already exists and integrating the appliance with the cabinetry matters more than being able to move it.
Bear in mind: the housing unit, worktop height, door system and front panel must match the model’s installation requirements.
Start by confirming what your kitchen can accommodate, then choose the width and capacity that suit your everyday needs.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Space compatibility |
Measure the width, height and depth. Check the clearance beneath the worktop, space for the hoses and the installation requirements if you are considering an integrated model. |
I want to be sure the appliance will fit beneath the worktop, inside the housing unit or in the intended space. |
| Independence from the cabinetry |
A freestanding model does not depend on a kitchen door front. An integrated model requires a housing unit, a compatible door or front panel, and the fittings specified by the model. |
I am looking for a solution that can be used without suitable kitchen furniture or an existing decorative door front. |
| Capacity and footprint |
Compare the stated capacity with your dishes and saucepans. Manufacturers’ examples quote 6 place settings for a compact model, around 9 to 10 for some 45 cm models and 13 to 15 for some 60 cm models. |
In a small kitchen, I want to limit the space taken up without having to run lots of small cycles. |
| Connections |
Locate the water supply, drainage and suitable electrical socket. Follow the model’s instructions and check that the supporting surface or floor is stable. |
I want to know before delivery whether the hoses and connections can be installed in the chosen location. |

Frequently asked questions
Can a freestanding dishwasher be installed beneath a worktop?
Yes, provided the space beneath the worktop is compatible with the dimensions and the model allows it. Bosch states that the removable top on some freestanding models can reduce the height from 84.5 cm to 81.5 cm; an Electrolux product sheet also mentions under-worktop installation with a removable top. Make sure you measure the depth and the space needed for the hoses too.
Does a countertop compact dishwasher remove the need for water and drainage connections?
Not necessarily. A compact format reduces the footprint and capacity, but the instructions must confirm the water supply, drainage and electrical connection requirements. Appliances with a direct connection require a water supply, drainage and a suitable socket.
When is an integrated dishwasher a poor choice after moving home?
It is unsuitable if you do not already have a measured housing unit, a suitable worktop and the required front-panel solution. Check the housing-unit dimensions and installation diagram before buying: under-worktop integration does not replace these prerequisites.
Can I use an extension lead to connect the dishwasher?
Bosch’s installation guide specifies a direct connection to a mains socket, rather than using an extension lead or adaptor. Also consult your model’s instructions and ask a professional for advice if the existing installation appears unsuitable.
In rented accommodation, who pays if the installation damages the property?
ANIL states that repairs relating to damage caused by abnormal use may be the tenant’s responsibility. Check your tenancy agreement and inventory before making any changes, and obtain the necessary permission if the proposed connection requires it.
