Who is it for?

Renters with existing connections

A freestanding model can help reduce the amount of daily washing-up without creating a built-in kitchen, provided the space, water inlet, drainage and electrical supply are already suitable. The ANIL reminds renters that written permission from the landlord is required before modifying the property or its equipment.

People living in a studio or small kitchen

A compact model may be worth considering when floor space or the amount of washing-up is limited. Check the dimensions, place setting capacity and requirements specific to the model you choose.

Households mindful of noise and consumption

In an open-plan kitchen or when running frequent cycles, compare the information on the energy label: noise level, water per cycle, kWh per 100 cycles and Eco programme duration. ADEME and the European Commission present this information as useful points of comparison between appliances.

Buying priorities

Start by confirming the available space and connections, then match the capacity to the amount of washing-up you actually produce before comparing the energy-label information.

Priority What to check Your needs
Space and connections Compare the available width, depth, height and access routes. Check the water inlet, drainage, electrical supply and the conditions specified in the model’s manual. I want to avoid buying an appliance that cannot be connected, or taking on work that is not permitted in the property.
Capacity and format Match the number of place settings to your meals and usual washing-up load. Consider the Eco programme duration if cycles need to run at particular times. I am looking for a format that avoids extra cycles without taking up unnecessary space in a small kitchen.
Noise Compare the noise level in dB and the noise class on a like-for-like basis across several models. ADEME states that an increase of three decibels represents an almost doubling of the noise. In an open-plan kitchen or near a living area, I want to minimise disruption while the dishwasher is running.
Consumption and maintenance Compare kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and Eco duration. Also check the warranty terms and parts availability for the model being sold. I want to assess everyday running costs beyond the displayed energy class and ensure the appliance can be maintained over time.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing freestanding installation with having no installation requirements

A connected dishwasher needs a water supply, drainage and an electrical supply. An installation service may be limited to connecting the appliance to an existing, compliant installation.

Measure the space, identify the existing connections and consult the manual for the exact model before ordering. If any work affects the property, ask the landlord for written permission before committing.

Plumbing, electrical or joinery work may be required if the space or connections are not already suitable.

  • Choosing based solely on the energy class

Appliances in similar energy classes can differ in water consumption, kWh per 100 cycles, Eco duration, capacity and noise levels. ADEME and the European Commission recommend checking all the information on the energy label.

Compare litres per cycle, kWh per 100 cycles, number of place settings, Eco programme duration and noise level for models with comparable capacity and usage conditions.

  • Treating a modified connection as a simple appliance installation

In France, the ANIL states that a renter must obtain the landlord’s written permission before modifying the property or its equipment. Routine maintenance and minor repairs do not automatically cover the creation of a new connection.

Distinguish between connecting to an existing installation and modifying the plumbing, electrical system or furniture. Keep the written authorisation and any documents relating to the work when required.

Unauthorised alterations may mean having to restore the property at the end of the tenancy, or may result in liability if the renter is responsible for any damage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a renter have a water inlet or drainage connection installed for a dishwasher?

Creating or modifying these connections requires the landlord’s written permission. The ANIL states that a renter must obtain this permission before modifying the property or its equipment. Request it before any drilling, tap installation or drainage alteration.

Does a landlord have to provide a dishwasher in a furnished rental?

No. A dishwasher is not included in the statutory minimum furniture list for a furnished property established by the decree of 31 July 2015. However, check the tenancy agreement and inventory: an appliance already listed may form part of the rented equipment.

What should you check before buying a connected freestanding dishwasher?

Check access to the water inlet, electrical supply and drainage, as well as the appliance’s exact dimensions. Bosch Électroménager France and Electrolux France state that a connection requires suitable installations; a service provider may not carry out missing plumbing, electrical or joinery work.

What should you compare on a dishwasher’s energy label in France?

Compare the energy class, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, place setting capacity, Eco programme duration, noise level in dB and noise class. ADEME and the European Commission present these standardised values as comparison tools, to be considered alongside your usual loading habits.

Which parts can you check for repairability after purchase?

For certain mains-powered domestic dishwashers covered by European rules, parts such as hinges, seals, spray arms, filters and baskets must remain available for 10 years after the model is withdrawn from the market. Also check the warranty and service terms applicable to the model being sold.
