Which households is it for?

Households switching from hand-washing to everyday machine washing

Your main aim may be to make washing up less of a chore and manage water use more effectively. Que Choisir states that a dishwasher can reduce water consumption compared with traditional hand-washing, but the format should match the amount of crockery and how often you run a cycle.

Smaller households with a narrow kitchen

If available width is limited or a 60 cm model would be difficult to fill, a 45 cm dishwasher could be worth considering. Que Choisir states that these appliances commonly offer 9 to 10 place settings. Countertop models also require you to check how much space the crockery takes up and how wastewater will be drained.

Households with a fitted kitchen or renovation project

Your choice also depends on how the appliance will fit with your kitchen furniture. A freestanding model has its own outer casing, whereas a fully integrated dishwasher may require a compatible furniture door, with the cabinet dimensions checked before ordering.

Priorities before buying

Priority What to check Your needs
Capacity and footprint Measure the available width. Compare the capacity of a 60 cm model, generally 12 to 17 place settings, with the 9 to 10 place settings often offered by 45 cm models. Check the size of the baskets and racks too. I want to wait until I have a useful load without cluttering the kitchen. A 45 cm model can free up width, but it may require more cycles if the daily volume is high.
Kitchen installation Check the dimensions, water inlet, drainage and electrical supply. For a freestanding model installed under a worktop, confirm that the top panel is removable. For an integrated model, check the cabinet space, door front, hinges and fixings. I want an appliance that genuinely fits my space. Depending on the model, a compact dishwasher with a tank may avoid the need for a fixed water inlet, but you will still need to plan for the drain hose.
Water, energy, noise and cycle duration Compare kWh/100 cycles, litres per cycle, the Eco cycle duration and dB on the energy label. ADEME explains that water and energy consumption are shown for a reference cycle. I am looking for clear consumption figures and an acceptable noise level for my home. The Eco programme duration also matters if I run the dishwasher at specific times.
Everyday washing performance Look at the Eco, Auto, Intensive and Quick programmes, as well as how saucepans and plates can be arranged. Que Choisir tests, among others, Eco and Auto or Normal programmes; a quick programme alone does not indicate how the appliance performs for every use. I want to spend less time washing up without giving up the everyday utensils I use. I check that the baskets and cycles suit the crockery I use most often.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a freestanding model for under-worktop installation without checking the top panel

You cannot assume that a freestanding model is suitable for installation under a worktop. Que Choisir explains that this depends in particular on whether the model has a removable top panel.

Measure the width, height and depth, then confirm that the product description states “removable top” and check the installation diagram before buying.

A matching furniture door and its installation may be additional requirements.

  • Assuming a self-contained compact model does not need drainage

An integrated tank may allow certain compact models to be used without a fixed water inlet, but wastewater still needs to be drained away. Daan Tech supplies a drain hose for its Bob model.

Decide where the wastewater will go, check the route of the hose and follow the model-specific instructions for securing it.

Frequently asked questions

Which energy-label figures should you compare first?

Compare the energy rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, place-setting capacity, Eco cycle duration and noise level in dB. ADEME explains that these figures appear on the label. European regulations specify that the Eco programme at rated capacity is used in particular to measure water consumption, duration, cleaning, drying and noise.

Is a narrow 45 cm dishwasher automatically cheaper to run than a 60 cm model?

No. Que Choisir states that 9-place-setting appliances are not necessarily cheaper than higher-capacity models. Choose a 45 cm dishwasher first for the available width and volume of dishes, then compare the labels of the models you are considering.

Can a countertop compact dishwasher work without a fixed water inlet?

This depends on the model. For Daan Tech’s Bob, the manufacturer states that it can operate using an integrated 3.9 to 4-litre tank. You must still plan for drainage, as the drain hose needs to be connected.

Does a dishwasher always use less water than washing up by hand?

This depends on how you wash by hand and how you use the appliance. Que Choisir states that a dishwasher can reduce water consumption compared with traditional hand-washing. ADEME recommends not pre-rinsing and running the appliance when it is full. Always compare the consumption figures shown for the model you choose.
