Hotels with capsule machines
Capsules make it easy to plan one serving per preparation, as long as you choose a system that works with each machine. Carte Noire and Auchan products, for example, specify Nespresso compatibility.
To serve decaffeinated espresso in the evening at your hotel, first choose a format that works with your machine: capsules for the corresponding system, whole beans for a machine with a grinder, or ground coffee and E.S.E. pods if your equipment accepts them. Then check that the product is labelled ‘decaffeinated’, that the pack size suits your service, and what the manufacturer says about its flavour profile. Decaffeinated does not necessarily mean caffeine-free.

Decaffeinated whole beans are suitable for equipment that accepts this format. Lavazza offers its Dek beans for espresso preparation; you’ll still need to adjust the grind and recipe for your hotel’s service.
The product name and specific product information matter when you need to describe the coffee served in the evening. For its decaffeinated ground espresso, illy states that the caffeine content does not exceed 0.1%; this figure does not apply to other products.
Start with the machine you have, then choose from the formats it accepts. These four preparation methods are not interchangeable.
Choose this if: your hotel uses a machine that explicitly accepts this type of capsule and you want to prepare individual servings.
Bear in mind: Nespresso Original compatibility does not mean a capsule works with every capsule system.
Choose this if: your hotel has a grinder or bean-to-cup machine and you want to adjust your espresso preparation.
Bear in mind: the grind, recipe and machine maintenance all need regular attention.
Choose this if: your machine accepts ground coffee, including through a suitable portafilter.
Bear in mind: ground coffee is not a direct substitute for capsules or whole beans. Follow the product’s storage instructions once opened, too.
Choose this if: your machine and its portafilter explicitly accept the E.S.E. standard.
Bear in mind: an E.S.E. pod cannot be used in place of a Nespresso or proprietary capsule.
| Criteria | What to check | Which customers is this for? |
|---|---|---|
| Machine compatibility | The exact system accepted by the machine and the compatibility information on the packaging. | If my machine only accepts a specific system, I need to be able to use the coffee I order without changing the equipment. Around 36% of consumers rank compatibility as their top priority. |
| Decaffeinated coffee information | The product name and, if customers need to know, the caffeine content stated for the exact product. | To describe the coffee served in the evening clearly, I need to distinguish ‘decaffeinated’ from ‘caffeine-free’. This is the main priority for around 29% of consumers. |
| Service and pack size | The number of capsules or net weight, as well as storage instructions once opened. | When I plan evening service, I want a pack size that suits the hotel’s needs without having to reorder too often. Around 21% of consumers prioritise service planning. |
| Flavour profile | The tasting notes provided by the brand and a trial using the machine and cup size used at the hotel. | If several products work with my machine, I want to choose the style of espresso served to customers rather than relying on a single intensity rating. Around 14% of consumers prioritise flavour profile. |
Nespresso capsules, Lavazza Firma capsules and E.S.E. pods are designed for different systems. A decaffeinated product may not work with your hotel’s equipment.
Check the exact system used by each machine, then confirm that the product is compatible before ordering several boxes.
A replacement order could delay service if the original format is not suitable.
The word ‘decaffeinated’ does not prove that a product contains no caffeine at all. For example, illy states that its decaffeinated ground espresso has a caffeine content of no more than 0.1%.
Use the term ‘decaffeinated’ in information for customers, and check the details for the exact product if you need to specify its caffeine content.
Intensity ratings and flavour descriptions relate to each manufacturer’s range. On their own, they are not enough to compare two espressos prepared using different machines.
Try the products you’re considering using the hotel’s machine and cup size before choosing one for service.

No. The term ‘decaffeinated’ does not guarantee that a product contains no caffeine at all. For its decaffeinated ground espresso, illy states that the caffeine content does not exceed 0.1%. If customers need more detail, check the information for the specific product you serve.
Check the exact system used by the machine and choose capsules that are compatible with it. A capsule labelled for Nespresso will not necessarily work with Dolce Gusto or Lavazza Firma; E.S.E. pods also require compatible equipment.
Follow the instructions on the product you choose. For its decaffeinated ground espresso, illy recommends storing it away from light and heat, preferably in the fridge after opening.
