Who is this guide for?

Espresso lovers after dinner

You want to enjoy your evening coffee while keeping an eye on your caffeine intake. The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (Anses) points out that caffeine affects sleep differently from person to person, so it’s also worth considering what you drink throughout the day.

Capsule machine users

You’re looking for a coffee in individual portions, but your machine’s system matters more than the flavour. Nespresso Original capsules and the soft coffee pods mentioned by Lavazza and Carte Noire are not interchangeable.

Fans of ground coffee or beans

You want control over how you make your coffee. Beans require a grinder or a suitable machine; with ground coffee, check that your appliance accepts it and follow the storage instructions once opened.

What should you look for?

Start with the machine you own, then check the ‘decaffeinated’ label, the flavour profile and the pack format of the options it can use.

Criteria What to check Who is it for?
Residual caffeine The ‘decaffeinated’ label and any stated caffeine content for the specific product. If I’m particularly mindful of my caffeine intake in the evening, I want to be able to check what the pack says rather than assume decaf contains none. Around 36% of consumers are said to prioritise this.
Compatibility Your machine’s exact system and the format it accepts: capsules, soft coffee pods, ground coffee or beans. I want to use the machine I already own, without finding out after buying that it can’t make the coffee. Compatibility is said to be the top priority for around 29% of consumers.
Flavour profile The stated flavour notes and roast of each compatible option; intensity is specific to each range. Once I’ve found the right format, I want to enjoy the flavours I like in my espresso. This is said to be the top priority for around 21% of consumers.
Portions and waste The number of portions and the product’s own recycling or composting instructions. I prefer to choose a pack size that suits how I use it and know what to do with the portions after brewing. Around 14% of consumers are said to prioritise these factors.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming ‘decaffeinated’ means ‘caffeine-free’

The term does not guarantee that a coffee contains no caffeine at all. According to illy, its Espresso Decaffeinated ground coffee, sold in a pack of 6 × 250 g, has a caffeine content of no more than 0.1%; this figure does not apply to other coffees.

If residual caffeine content is a factor in your choice, check the label on the product you’re buying.

  • Confusing capsules with soft coffee pods

A capsule labelled as compatible with Nespresso Original and a Carte Noire soft coffee pod require different machines.

Check the exact system your machine uses, then confirm compatibility on the product page.

  • Taking intensity as a measure of caffeine

Intensity scales vary between ranges and can’t be used to compare residual caffeine levels between products.

First choose a decaf coffee in the right format, then compare compatible options by their flavour descriptions.

  • Putting an industrially compostable pod in your home compost

Carte Noire says its Decaffeinated No. 5 pods are designed for industrial composting, not garden compost.

If end-of-life disposal is important to you, check your local authority’s collection instructions before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Is decaf espresso always caffeine-free?

No. ‘Decaffeinated’ does not necessarily mean completely caffeine-free. For its Espresso Decaffeinated ground coffee, sold in a pack of 6 × 250 g, illy states that the caffeine content is no more than 0.1%; check the label on the specific product you choose.

Which capsules should I choose for a Nespresso Original machine?

Choose capsules whose product page explicitly states that they’re compatible with Nespresso Original. Lavazza says this for its Decaf capsules, and Carte Noire for Espresso Decaffeinated No. 5. This doesn’t make soft coffee pods or capsules for another system compatible.

How should I store ground decaf coffee once opened?

Follow the instructions on the packaging. For its Espresso Decaffeinated ground coffee, illy recommends keeping it away from light and heat, preferably in the fridge once opened.

Can Carte Noire Decaffeinated No. 5 pods go in garden compost?

No. Carte Noire says these pods are designed for industrial composting, not home or garden compost. Check whether your local authority accepts this type of waste.
