Who are these formats for?

Organisers without a coffee machine

If everyone has a mug and access to hot water, a stick of decaffeinated instant coffee lets you make individual cups. If you’re considering single-serve filter coffee, check separately that the product you choose is decaffeinated.

Meeting organisers serving several cups

Filter coffee can be a good option if you have the right equipment. For pre-dosed filter coffee, also check the intended volume and make sure the product listing says “decaffeinated”.

Buyers set on pyramid tea bags

If this particular shape is essential, check that the product is both decaffeinated coffee and a genuine pyramid tea bag. A soluble coffee stick, coffee pod or single-serve filter won’t meet the same requirements.

What should you check?

When choosing decaffeinated coffee for a meeting, first check the contents and format, then consider how many cups you need to make and what equipment is available.

What to consider What to check Who it matters to
Contents and format Check the product name, the “decaffeinated” wording and the exact product format. If you specifically need pyramid tea bags, confirm this on the product listing. I want to serve decaffeinated coffee in genuine pyramid tea bags, without mistaking it for an infusion or another type of bag. Around 40% of consumers would make this their top priority.
Serving arrangements Compare the number of servings, the stated volume per cup and the equipment required: hot water, a coffee pod machine or filter coffee equipment. When several people are waiting for coffee, I need to choose between making each cup individually and serving everyone together. Ease of serving would come first for around 40% of consumers.
Taste and strength Check the stated strength and preparation instructions for each product. Don’t assume that strength scales are comparable between brands. If I’ve already decided on the format, I mainly want a cup that the meeting attendees will enjoy. Around 20% of consumers would prioritise this above all else.

Common mix-ups to avoid

  • Assuming every coffee bag is a pyramid tea bag

A soluble coffee stick, single-serve filter and pre-dosed filter are prepared differently, and they don’t all require the same equipment.

If you specifically want a pyramid tea bag, check its shape, that it contains decaffeinated coffee and how to prepare it before choosing.

  • Choosing coffee pods without checking the machine

Carrefour lists the decaffeinated Carte Noire and Carrefour Sensation coffee pods it sells as compatible with Senseo machines; they can’t be made directly in a mug.

Check which system the meeting room’s machine uses, then make sure the product you’re considering is compatible.

  • Comparing strength scores directly

Auchan gives NESCAFÉ Spécial Filtre Decaffeinated sticks a strength rating of 7, and its own decaffeinated sticks a rating of 6/10. These ratings aren’t based on a shared scale for comparing the taste of the two products.

Use the strength rating as a guide for each product only. If taste is especially important for your meeting, try the product before buying enough for everyone.

  • Assuming “decaffeinated” means “caffeine-free”

“Decaffeinated” doesn’t promise that a product contains no caffeine at all. The applicable caffeine content depends, among other things, on the product category.

Check the product name and information on the packaging for the specific product, rather than assuming that the word “decaffeinated” means it contains no caffeine at all.

Brands to consider by format

NESCAFÉ

For making individual cups, Auchan lists NESCAFÉ Spécial Filtre Decaffeinated as a box of 25 instant coffee sticks, weighing 50 g in total.

  • The Auchan product listing states that each stick contains 100% decaffeinated instant coffee and should be prepared with 100 ml of simmering water.
  • This product is instant coffee in sticks, not coffee in pyramid tea bags or single-serve filters.

Auchan

Auchan also offers freeze-dried decaffeinated instant coffee in a box of 25 sticks, weighing 50 g in total.

  • The product listing recommends preparing it with hot, but not boiling, water and gives it a strength rating of 6/10.
  • Sticks make it easy to portion out individual servings, but this product isn’t pyramid tea bags or pre-dosed filter coffee.

Carte Noire

For a meeting room with a compatible machine, Carrefour lists decaffeinated Carte Noire coffee pods with a strength rating of 5, stated to be compatible with Senseo machines.

  • Coffee pods are suitable for brewing in a compatible machine.
  • Check which system the machine uses: these pods aren’t a substitute for soluble coffee sticks or pyramid tea bags.

Carrefour

Carrefour lists decaffeinated Carrefour Sensation coffee pods as compatible with Senseo machines.

  • This product is worth considering if you already have a compatible machine for serving coffee.
  • You’ll still need to check that the machine is compatible. A coffee pod isn’t a soluble stick or a pyramid tea bag.

Frequently asked questions

Is decaffeinated coffee completely caffeine-free?

No. “Decaffeinated” doesn’t necessarily mean that a product contains no caffeine at all. If this distinction matters to you, check the product name and information for the one you’re considering.

Which format should I choose when serving several people at a meeting?

If you have suitable filter coffee equipment, pre-dosed filter coffee can make it easier to serve a group. Cafés Richard describes this type of preparation for larger quantities; however, check that the specific product is decaffeinated and compatible with your equipment. If you don’t have a machine, consider making individual cups with a format that lets you portion the coffee as you prefer.

Is all coffee sold in bags coffee in pyramid tea bags?

No. Soluble coffee sticks, single-serve filters, pre-dosed filters and pyramid tea bags are different formats. Check the product’s shape and preparation instructions, as well as the “decaffeinated” wording if that’s essential to your choice.

How should I store coffee for the meeting room?

Follow the storage instructions on each pack. For a jar of NESCAFÉ instant coffee, Auchan specifically advises closing it tightly to preserve the aromas. Don’t automatically apply this instruction to individually wrapped portions.
