What should you look for first?
Start with how you’ll make your coffee, then compare the compatible options by their ingredients, flavour notes and packaging.
| Criterion |
What to check |
Who is it for? |
| Format and preparation |
Check what type of coffee maker or machine you have. If you don’t have a machine, choose instant coffee to make with hot water. |
If I want to make a quick cup or use a particular machine, I want to avoid buying a format that won’t work with it. Around 45% of consumers are said to prioritise this. |
| Ingredients and flavour |
Read the ingredients, stated tasting notes and the strength given for that particular product. Don’t treat strength as a universal measure of flavour. |
If several coffees suit my equipment, I’m mainly looking for a blend with a profile that matches my preferences. This is said to be the top criterion for around 33% of consumers. |
| Packaging and label |
Check the net quantity, ingredients, date shown and storage instructions once opened. |
For my regular shop, I want packaging that suits how much coffee I drink, with information that’s easy to check. Around 22% of consumers are said to prioritise these details. |

Frequently asked questions
Does decaf mean you can drink coffee late without affecting your sleep?
No. The term ‘decaf’ doesn’t predict how each person will react. Anses says caffeine’s effects on sleep vary from person to person, so check the product information rather than assuming it contains no caffeine at all.
Which decaf coffee should you choose if you don’t have a machine?
You can make instant decaf coffee with hot water, without a coffee maker. For its Spécial Filtre Décaféiné, NESCAFÉ recommends one teaspoon of coffee per 100 ml of hot water. Pods and capsules, on the other hand, require a compatible machine.
How should you store decaf ground coffee once opened?
Follow the instructions on the pack and seal it again after use. Auchan recommends keeping its decaf ground coffee away from heat and moisture. Carte Noire also advises storing it in a dry place, away from heat.
What should you check on the label of prepacked decaf coffee?
Check the product name, ingredients, net quantity and date shown on the pack. For prepacked food sold in France, the Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control reminds consumers that mandatory information must be visible, legible and written at least in French.
