Who are these formats suitable for?

Stall without a machine

If you have cups and hot water, a single-serve filter coffee bag, also known as a drip bag, or instant coffee means you won’t need to set up a machine. Terres de Café, for example, offers a range of drip bags that includes a decaf option.

Stall with a compatible machine

If you already have a Senseo machine planned for your stall, soft decaf coffee pods can be used to make your drinks. Check that the pods are compatible with your exact machine and follow the storage instructions for your chosen product.

Gifts or individual tastings

If presentation matters as much as serving a cup, look for individually wrapped filter coffee bags. Make sure the product you’re giving is decaf and check how it should be prepared: individual packaging alone doesn’t tell you what type of filter it uses.

What should you look for before choosing?

Start by deciding whether you’ll be using a machine at the stall. Without one, your main options are filter coffee or instant coffee; if you have a machine, pod compatibility is essential.

Criteria What to check Who is it for?
Preparation without a machine Whether it comes with an individual filter or how to prepare the instant coffee; hot water and cups are needed. I want to make a decaf coffee at a stall with hot water but no coffee machine. Around 40% of consumers put this need to prepare coffee without a machine first.
Serving with a machine Clear confirmation that the pods are compatible with the machine available, plus storage instructions. If the machine is already set up, I want to use suitable single-serve portions to make several cups. Around 30% of consumers would prioritise serving coffee with a machine.
Individual presentation Decaf version, filter type, individual packaging and number of bags. For a gift or tasting, I prefer portions that are easy to present individually. Around 30% of consumers would put individual presentation first.

Mistakes to avoid at the counter

  • Assuming a pyramid bag is a filter coffee bag

A bag’s shape doesn’t tell you whether it contains decaf coffee. A drip bag is an individual coffee filter that sits on a cup; it isn’t proof that the coffee comes in a pyramid bag.

Before ordering, check the product name, contents and preparation instructions.

  • Ordering pods without checking the machine

Soft pods compatible with Senseo need a matching machine: you can’t prepare them like a filter coffee bag in a cup.

Check which machine model is available, whether you have access to electricity and how the pods should be stored.

You’ll also need to plan for the power supply and cleaning the machine.

  • Mistaking an instant coffee stick for filter coffee

Instant coffee sticks are stirred into water; they don’t contain an individual filter filled with ground coffee. For example, Auchan says to prepare its NESCAFÉ Spécial Filtre Décaféiné stick with 100 ml of hot, almost-boiling water.

Choose a stick if this preparation method suits your service, or a drip bag if you want to make coffee using a filter.

An option for serving instant decaf coffee without a machine.

  • The Spécial Filtre Décaféiné range includes a 100 g jar; Auchan also lists a box of 25 sticks weighing 50 g.
  • These instant coffee formats are neither filter coffee bags nor pyramid bags.

Carte Noire

A soft decaf coffee pod option to consider if your stall has a compatible machine.

  • Carrefour lists a pack of 36 Carte Noire Décaféiné Intensité 5 pods compatible with Senseo machines.
  • Machine compatibility doesn’t mean the pods can be used without an appliance.

Soft decaf coffee pods for a stall with the right equipment.

  • JDE Professional describes Senseo Décaféiné as roasted, ground coffee in pods.
  • A compatible machine is required; JDE Professional advises storing the product in a cool, dry place.

Carrefour

A ground decaf coffee option for a stall that already has suitable brewing equipment.

  • The coffee isn’t individually portioned and requires a coffee maker or other suitable equipment.

Auchan

An instant decaf coffee option that you can measure straight into a cup.

  • For its Intensité 6 instant decaf coffee, Auchan recommends one to two teaspoons and hot, non-boiling water.
  • You measure it out with a spoon, so it isn’t an individual filter coffee portion.

E.Leclerc / Plantation

A soft decaf coffee pod option to consider for a stall with the right equipment.

  • E.Leclerc describes a Plantation pack of 36 pods containing roasted, ground decaf coffee.
  • Check that the pods are compatible with your machine and review the purchasing options available for this product.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pyramid bag always suitable for decaf coffee?

No. The shape of the bag confirms neither that it contains decaf coffee nor how it should be prepared. If you want to serve coffee without a machine, check the product name and look for an individual filter designed to sit on a cup.

Which format should you choose for a stall without a coffee machine?

An individual decaf filter coffee bag is a good choice if you want to brew coffee in a cup using hot water. If you’d rather add the coffee straight to the cup, choose a stick or instant decaf coffee and follow the dosage instructions.

What should you look for on the packaging when choosing decaf coffee?

Check the exact product name, net quantity and preparation instructions so you can tell instant coffee, ground coffee, pods and filter bags apart. If your stall has a machine, also check that the pods are listed as compatible and follow the product’s storage instructions.
