Who is this guide for?

For cleaning every type of floor

You switch between hard floors, parquet and carpets, and are looking for a main vacuum cleaner. Compare performance on each surface, including when the dust container is full. Que Choisir’s test protocol covers several floor types and tests with a full dust container.

For pet hair, upholstery and awkward corners

You also need to vacuum carpets, cushions and tight spaces. Check what’s included in the box: some Miele Guard L1 versions come with a turbo brush, a flexible crevice nozzle and a crevice nozzle.

For longer cleaning sessions

You want to cut down on changing sockets, noise and handling. Check the operating radius, stated weight and dust-container capacity, as well as the maintenance involved, before you choose.

What to look for

Dated 26 November 2025, Que Choisir’s test protocol covers several floor types and tests with a full dust container. Wattage alone doesn’t tell you how well a vacuum cleans: look at results for different surfaces and the features that matter in your home.

What matters What to check Who should consider it?
Cleaning several types of floor Look for separate results on parquet, tiles and carpets, as well as with a full dust container. When my home has hard floors, parquet and carpets, I want a vacuum that works well on all of them. Around 25% of consumers prioritise effective cleaning across several floor types.
Brushes and nozzles Check which accessories are actually included and whether they’re suitable for the floors, carpets, upholstery and awkward corners you need to clean. If I need to tackle pet hair on carpets, clean cushions and reach into gaps, I check what’s included rather than relying on the version name. Around 25% of consumers prioritise pet hair, upholstery and hard-to-reach areas.
Dust collection and maintenance Compare bags and dust containers, filters and emptying methods. Que Choisir notes that using a bag can reduce exposure to dust when disposing of waste, but this isn’t a guarantee for every model. I prefer to know how to empty the vacuum and maintain its filter before choosing a dust-collection system. Dust collection and maintenance come first for around 19% of consumers.
Noise Check the stated noise level for the model and the conditions under which it was measured. A “quiet” label is no substitute for a figure. If I’m cleaning for a long time, noise matters to me. Around 12% of consumers put quiet operation first.
Moving and carrying Consider the operating radius, weight and dust-container capacity in relation to your home. Check whether the stated weight refers to the vacuum body alone or the complete appliance. In a home with several rooms or stairs, I want to avoid changing sockets too often without choosing a vacuum that’s difficult to carry. Around 19% of consumers prioritise reach and portability.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Choosing based only on wattage

Electrical power consumption alone doesn’t tell you how well a vacuum will clean your floors.

Compare results across different floor types and with a full bag or dust container, rather than focusing only on the wattage.

  • Trusting “pet” or “parquet” in the name without checking what’s included

The Miele Guard L1 versions reviewed don’t all come with the same accessories: one includes a turbo brush, while another has a brush specifically for parquet.

Check the reference numbers of the brushes and nozzles supplied with the exact version you’re considering. Some accessories may need to be bought separately.

  • Assuming a bagless vacuum needs no maintenance

A reusable dust container still needs emptying, and the filters need to be maintained. A container that’s too full or a clogged filter can affect performance.

Compare the maintenance involved for each model and follow the instructions, rather than comparing only the consumables.

Cleaning the dust container and maintaining the filters take time; some filters may also need replacing.

  • Comparing weights that measure different things

The weight of the vacuum body alone isn’t directly comparable with the weight of the complete appliance, particularly if you need to carry it up and down stairs.

Check what’s included in the stated weight and compare like with like.

Brands to consider by model

Miele

The Guard L1 versions reviewed come with accessories geared either towards pet hair and awkward corners or towards hard floors.

  • Miele lists an STB 305-3 turbo brush and an SFD 20 flexible crevice nozzle for the Cat & Dog Flex. The Parquet XL comes with a 41 cm Parquet Twister XL brush.
  • Claims about tackling pet hair and reducing odours come from Miele; they aren’t independent comparative test results.

Rowenta

The Silence Force Cyclonic Effitech RO7936EA is a bagless option to consider if you’re looking for a reusable dust container and a parquet brush.

  • Rowenta gives a noise level of 59 dB(A) at maximum power for this model, which also comes with crevice and upholstery nozzles.
  • The noise level is a manufacturer’s figure, not the result of an independent comparative test. If you vacuum pet hair from carpets, check separately whether a turbo brush is compatible.

Bosch

The BGB6SIL0L ProSilence combines a stated large-capacity bag with a reusable HEPA filter.

  • Bosch lists a 4 L bag, a 12 m operating radius and a washable, reusable HEPA filter for this model.
  • The stated 10-year motor warranty doesn’t mean that the other components have the same cover.

Philips

The FC9745/09 7000 Series PowerCyclone 8 is a bagless model to consider for its multi-surface brush and dust-compartment control system.

  • Philips says the Allergy Lock system checks that the dust compartment is closed before the vacuum starts.
  • Claims about maintaining suction come from the manufacturer; they don’t replace test results for the model with a full dust container.

Frequently asked questions

Are turbo brushes and powered brushes interchangeable?

No, don’t assume they’re interchangeable. A powered brush has a motorised central roller, and accessories and their compatibility depend on the vacuum. If you need an additional head, check the compatible reference number rather than relying on how similar it looks.

Is a HEPA filter always washable?

No. Follow the instructions for the specific filter. Bosch describes the filter in the BGB6SIL0L as washable and reusable; this doesn’t apply to all HEPA filters.

What should I check about a vacuum’s repairability in France?

For a new corded vacuum, the repairability index must be provided at the point of sale. The French Ministry of the Economy reiterated this requirement in its update of 18 August 2026. The index tells you about repairability, not suction performance or a guaranteed lifespan.

Can an old energy label help me compare current vacuum cleaners?

No. The European Commission states that Delegated Regulation (EU) 665/2013 on energy labelling for vacuum cleaners was repealed with effect from 19 January 2019, and these products no longer carry an energy label. Ecodesign requirements are separate.

Does a long motor warranty replace the statutory guarantee of conformity?

No. According to Service-Public.fr, when a consumer buys from a professional seller, the statutory guarantee of conformity covers defects that appear within two years of delivery, subject to its conditions. A commercial warranty limited to the motor is separate. The Service-Public.fr information was checked on 17 August 2026.
