Who is this choice for?

People living in a small home with hard floors

In a studio flat or one-bedroom home with mainly lino or tiled floors, a manual appliance lets you deal with everyday mess without setting up a robot. However, check that wet cleaning is suitable for your flooring and, for lino, that it’s been fitted in a compatible way.

People with limited storage space

Before choosing a cordless model, check how much room the appliance and its docking station take up. You’ll also need an accessible spot for emptying the tanks and maintaining the roller after cleaning.

Buyers thinking about long-term use

If you plan to keep the appliance for several years, find out which rollers, filters and parts fit its exact model number. For applicable vacuum cleaners sold in France, the repairability index is another useful point of reference, as noted by the ministry responsible for the ecological transition.

What should you compare?

Start with the surfaces you need to clean, then compare the power source, storage space and maintenance requirements. An appliance should be easy to use while you clean and simple to look after once it’s put away.

What to consider What to check What I need
Flooring Check which surfaces and cleaning modes are approved for the exact model. For lino, check how it’s been fitted too. Always distinguish between wet cleaning and dry vacuuming on rugs. My floors are mainly lino or tiles, but I want to avoid using a wet brush on a surface the manufacturer says it isn’t suitable for.
Cordless or corded For a cordless model, compare the stated run time, charging time and the space needed for the docking station. For a corded model, consider whether sockets are easy to reach and where you’ll store the cable. UFC-Que Choisir highlights the trade-off between freedom of movement and needing to recharge. I’d rather move around without shifting a cable; or, conversely, I want to keep cleaning without waiting for a recharge.
Dry vacuuming Check what the appliance can actually do with dry debris and make sure you have a solution for rugs. In tests published in March 2026, UFC-Que Choisir notes that many floor cleaners are primarily designed to wash hard floors and may have limited suction. I also have rugs, skirting boards or lots of dry dust: a dry vacuum cleaner and a separate floor washer may be better suited to these jobs.
Manoeuvrability Compare the weight you’ll need to handle, the clearance required to clean under furniture and the amount of space it takes up when stored. A stated clearance measurement is only useful if it works with your furniture. In a small space, I want to be able to pick up the appliance, move around furniture and find a place to store it after use.
After use Find out how to empty the clean and dirty water, clean the roller and maintain the filter. A self-cleaning function doesn’t eliminate all these tasks; UFC-Que Choisir specifically highlights the need to maintain tanks and other wet components. I can clean the appliance after each use, but I want to know what I’ll still need to do, even with a docking station.
Consumables Check the roller and filter part numbers, how often they’re recommended for replacement and whether parts are available for the exact model. UFC-Que Choisir notes that consumables are often specific to each brand. I want to be able to replace worn parts and have the appliance repaired, rather than rely on accessories that are hard to find.
Automation A robot is designed for a different kind of cleaning. Consider how easily it can move around your home, whether you have room for its docking station and how to maintain its mopping system. I mainly want to clean specific areas myself. A robot would only suit me if I wanted to automate regular cleaning.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a floor washer will replace all dry vacuuming

In its March 2026 tests, UFC-Que Choisir found that some floor cleaners don’t vacuum particularly well and can struggle with stubborn stains. Their main purpose is still everyday washing of hard floors.

If you have rugs, lots of dry dust or ingrained stains, keep a suitable way to vacuum dry or clean these areas separately.

  • Forgetting to maintain it after cleaning

Dirty water, rollers and filters still need attention, even on an appliance with a self-cleaning cycle.

Before you buy, work out where you’ll empty the tanks and how you’ll leave the parts to dry, following the instructions.

  • Comparing the appliances alone

Rollers, filters and detergents may need replacing. UFC-Que Choisir explains that these consumables are generally specific to each manufacturer.

Find out which parts fit the model you’re considering and check they’re available before ordering.

For example, Rowenta recommends replacing the roller and filter on the X-Clean 10 every 100 cycles, or every six months if you use the appliance at least three times a week.

  • Assuming wet cleaning is suitable for every floor

Restrictions vary depending on the model and mode you use. Philips warns, for example, that an AquaSpin brush can lift lino that hasn’t been fitted properly. Tineco says not to use its Floor One S5 on rugs.

Read the instructions for the exact model and, for delicate flooring, test it on an inconspicuous area. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s instructions too.

A guide to some brands

These examples relate to the ranges and models mentioned, not every appliance made by each brand. They also don’t imply that these products are included in the Joybuy selection below.

Rowenta

The X-Clean range includes cordless floor washers, such as the X-Clean 10.

  • Rowenta states that the X-Clean 10 offers up to 60 minutes of run time and a 65 °C cleaning and drying cycle. These are figures quoted by the brand.
  • The X-Clean 10 roller and filter are consumables. Check the kit reference and replacement frequency that match how you use it.

Kärcher

The FC 7 Cordless is an example of a manual cordless cleaner designed for hard floors.

  • Kärcher states that the FC 7 Cordless offers 45 minutes of run time and that essential parts for its FC floor cleaners remain available for at least six years after production ends.
  • Check the run time and parts available for the exact model you’re considering.

Philips

AquaTrio models distinguish between washing hard floors and dry vacuuming.

  • For the relevant AquaTrio models, Philips recommends wet cleaning and vacuuming on hard floors, and dry vacuuming only on rugs and carpets.
  • Philips says lino must be properly fitted to prevent the AquaSpin brush from lifting it. Check the instructions for your model number.

Tineco

The Floor One series includes hard-floor washers, such as the Floor One S5.

  • Tineco support specifies which surfaces the Floor One S5 is designed for and recommends testing it on an inconspicuous area if your flooring is delicate.
  • Tineco says the Floor One S5 shouldn’t be used on rugs. Check the restrictions separately for any other Floor One model.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use a floor washer on lino and tiles?

Yes, if the manufacturer approves wet cleaning for the type of flooring. How lino is fitted matters too: Philips warns that the AquaSpin brush on some AquaTrio models can lift lino that hasn’t been fitted properly. Check the instructions for the exact model and, if your flooring is delicate, test it on a small, inconspicuous area.

Can the same appliance wash a rug?

Don’t assume that wet cleaning is suitable for rugs. Tineco says not to use the Floor One S5 on rugs. For the relevant AquaTrio models, Philips says to use dry vacuuming only on rugs and carpets. Check the modes permitted in your model’s instructions.

Does self-cleaning mean you don’t have to empty the dirty water?

No. A self-cleaning cycle can make roller maintenance easier, but you’ll still need to deal with the tanks and other parts as instructed. UFC-Que Choisir lists emptying the tanks and cleaning the rollers or filters among the tasks to do after use.

How can you check repairability before buying in France?

For an applicable vacuum cleaner, check its displayed repairability index, then see which parts are available for the exact model, particularly those that are likely to wear out. The ministry responsible for the ecological transition states that vacuum cleaners are among the product categories covered by this index. It doesn’t replace checking which consumables are specific to the model.
