Essential selection criteria
Start with the meals you usually prepare, then check the available space, clearances and electrical connection before comparing features.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Footprint and storage |
Compare the width, depth and height with the available worktop space, as well as the clearances specified in the instructions. Also check that your dishes, baking tins or portions will genuinely fit inside the cavity or pot. |
I want to keep a usable food-preparation area or be able to store the appliance between meals. A slim hob may be easier to slide into a cupboard than a cavity appliance, but it does not offer the same functions. |
| Cooking method |
For reheating and defrosting, look at the microwave functions. For bakes and pastries, check the temperature settings on a mini oven. For one-pot meals, review the multicooker’s programmes. |
My meals determine the right format : I may prioritise a hob if I cook with a frying pan, or a multicooker if I mainly prepare soups, rice, steamed vegetables and slow-cooked dishes. |
| Power and electrical connection |
Note the appliance’s rated power and add together the power ratings of appliances used at the same time. Always observe the limit stated for your extension lead or power strip. |
I want to avoid overloading a connection when several appliances are running. Promotelec reminds users that sockets must not be installed above a sink or above hobs or cooking rings. |
| Cleaning and containers |
Check the removable parts, cleaning programmes and permitted materials. For microwaveable foods, follow the power and cooking time shown on the packaging. |
I’m looking for an appliance that is easy to use every day without taking risks with containers. Anses recommends following the instructions on food packaging intended for microwave use. |

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether a portable induction hob is suitable for my saucepans ?
Check that your cookware is induction-compatible, then review the limits of your chosen model. For the Everyday Slim reviewed here, Tefal specifies a contact area between the cookware and hob of 10 to 26 cm ; a compatible saucepan outside this range may not be detected correctly.
Can I plug several cooking appliances into the same power strip ?
Only if the combined power used at the same time remains below the maximum power stated on your power strip. The Legrand example reviewed here is rated at 16 A, 230 V and 3 680 W in total : add together the rated power of all the appliances being used.
Where must a socket not be installed in a kitchen ?
According to Promotelec’s reminder concerning the NF C 15-100 standard, socket outlets must not be installed above sink bowls or above cooking rings or hobs. This rule concerns electrical installation ; do not alter a permanent installation without the appropriate qualifications.
Can any type of packaging be heated in a microwave ?
No. Anses recommends following the power and cooking-time instructions shown on food packaging suitable for microwave use. Overheating, particularly at excessive power, may increase the risk of substances migrating from the packaging into the food.
Is a 20 L mini oven enough for a small kitchen ?
That depends on the diameter of your dishes and the size of your portions, not just the stated capacity. The Severin TO 2067 is specified as 20 L and can accommodate pizzas or tins up to 30 cm in diameter according to the manufacturer ; measure your usual tins and the available space before buying.
