What should you check before choosing?
In a small kitchen, first work out where the appliance can be installed and used. Then compare its capacity with your daily load of washing up and the space it will take up.

Who this matters to |
| Connections and installation |
Check the model’s instructions for the water inlet, drainage, socket and hose routing. Have any electrical changes assessed. |
If I can’t connect and power the appliance where I plan to put it, its dimensions won’t solve my problem. Around 42% of consumers say installation feasibility is their top priority. |
| Everyday capacity |
Compare the stated number of place settings with your plates and larger utensils from a day’s use, then check the basket layout. |
If I cook often, I want to fit pans and dishes inside without having to empty the appliance after every meal. Everyday capacity is the top priority for around 33% of consumers. |
| Actual space required |
Measure the width, height and depth, as well as the clearance needed for the door and the space required behind the appliance. |
I might be able to free up floor space but not lose a large part of my worktop, or vice versa. Keeping usable space takes priority over other considerations for around 25% of consumers. |
The size label alone doesn’t tell you where an appliance can be installed. For example, Darty lists a compact model with 6 place settings that’s around 55 cm wide and 50 cm deep. The 45 cm models described by Whirlpool France and Candy France are narrower, but need a low installation height of around 82 to 85 cm, depending on the model and installation type. Always compare your kitchen measurements with those of the specific model.

Frequently asked questions
Which connections should you check for a compact worktop dishwasher?
Check the water inlet specified for the model, its drainage method, a suitable socket and the space needed for the hoses. Bosch and Whirlpool’s installation guides cover water, drainage and electricity; the instructions for the model you choose set out the requirements for your home.
Will a compact worktop model always work without a fixed water inlet?
No. “Compact” describes its size, not a water supply method that’s common to every model. If a product listing mentions a manually filled tank, also check the instructions to see how waste water is drained and what the electrical requirements are.
When should you choose a 45 cm model over a compact worktop dishwasher?
Consider a 45 cm model if you have suitable floor space and a compact dishwasher’s baskets wouldn’t hold your daily washing up. The models featured by Que Choisir, Whirlpool France and Electrolux France show that 45 cm dishwashers can hold 9 to 11 place settings. Also check their height, depth and installation type.
What should you compare on the European energy label?
The European Commission lists details including capacity, energy use per 100 Eco programme cycles, water use per cycle, programme duration and noise level. When comparing two models for the same use, consider all these figures together rather than looking only at the energy-efficiency class letter.
What rights do you have in France if the appliance doesn’t match its description?
When a business sells goods to a consumer, the statutory guarantee of conformity may apply if the product doesn’t match its description. The French Ministry of the Economy explains that it may also cover certain installation problems if the seller was responsible for the installation, or if the instructions supplied were insufficient or incorrect. A commercial guarantee is separate.
