What should you compare before choosing ?
In a tiny kitchen, first make sure the appliance will fit and that its installation type is suitable. Then compare the space for fresh and frozen food, followed by noise and energy consumption.
| What matters |
What to check |
Who it matters most to |
| Space and ventilation |
Appliance and recess dimensions, door opening, installation type and the clearances specified in the manual. |
If my fridge needs to fit under a worktop or into an existing recess, I also check the door opening and ventilation before settling on a format. Around 31 % of consumers prioritise whether the appliance will fit. |
| Freezing capacity |
The star rating and compartment capacity for the exact model; freezer capacity separate from fridge capacity. |
If I often store frozen food or want to freeze fresh food, I check the compartment’s function and capacity. Freezing comes ahead of other criteria for around 25 % of consumers. |
| Space for fresh food |
The fridge’s usable capacity, interior layout and available height for a single-door model. |
When I shop for several meals, I want enough room for fresh food without sacrificing useful storage for the sake of total capacity alone. Fresh-food storage is a priority for around 19 % of consumers. |
| Noise in a living space |
The noise level declared for the exact model and where the appliance will be in relation to your relaxation space. |
If my kitchen opens onto my living area, I compare the stated noise level before choosing. Quiet is the main criterion for around 13 % of consumers. |
| Energy consumption |
Annual consumption in kWh and comparable features, particularly capacity and functions. |
I check annual energy consumption once I’ve ruled out formats that won’t fit my home. This is the top priority for around 12 % of consumers. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a freezer compartment enough if I want to freeze meals I’ve made myself ?
Not necessarily. According to Que Choisir Ensemble’s glossary, a three-star compartment is for storing food that’s already frozen at −18 °C, while a four-star compartment is suitable for freezing food. Check the star rating and capacity stated for the model you’re considering.
Can I put a freestanding tabletop fridge in a recess under a worktop ?
Don’t assume it will fit just because of its height. Check the manual for the permitted installation type, ventilation clearances and door opening. For an integrated appliance, also make sure the recess dimensions and door-panel fixing meet the model’s requirements.
What temperature should I keep fresh food at in the fridge ?
Anses recommends keeping food between 0 °C and +4 °C at the coldest point. Find this spot and check the temperature after installation. A compact fridge still needs the same checks.
Which energy details should I compare when buying a new appliance in France ?
For the appliances covered, the European Commission says the energy label must be displayed at the point of sale, including online. Compare the model’s class and annual consumption, taking its capacity and functions into account.
What should I do if my new fridge has a fault, and how can I have my old one taken away ?
If you buy from a professional seller, you can make a claim under the legal guarantee of conformity through the seller, under the conditions set out by law. The DGCCRF states that you have two years from delivery of the goods to bring a claim. When a retailer sells a new appliance, free ‘one-for-one’ take-back applies to an equivalent used appliance. Ask the seller how to arrange this.
