Who are these formats suitable for?

Single person or couple with little washing-up

A countertop mini dishwasher or a model with a water tank can save you time without installing a floor-standing appliance, provided the load per cycle matches your meals and your worktop can support its footprint. Candy France and Daan Tech describe these formats as suitable for small spaces.

Renter without an accessible water inlet

A model with an integrated water tank can eliminate the need for a fixed water inlet. You will still need to fill it manually and arrange an outlet for the wastewater, as Daan Tech specifies for its Bob model.

Small household with an equipped 45 cm cabinet space

If your daily washing-up exceeds the capacity of a mini model, a 45 cm appliance may be worth considering if you have a suitable cabinet space, water inlet, power supply, waste outlet and enough room to open the door. Bosch presents this format as suitable for small kitchens.

What to check before buying

Measure the space before comparing programmes: the connections, drainage and your actual load will determine which format remains practical for everyday use.

Priority What to check Your needs
Actual footprint Compare the width, depth and height with your worktop or cabinet space. Also allow for the door opening and the pipe routing. I want to keep a clear walkway and avoid having a countertop appliance permanently take over my worktop.
Capacity Check the number of place settings, the basket layout and the permitted dimensions for plates, pans and glasses. I am looking for an appliance that can handle my largest daily load without requiring multiple cycles.
Water and drainage Check separately how the appliance is supplied with water, whether the tank needs filling, where the drain hose goes and which outlet points are permitted. I need to know whether my home can accommodate a standard connection or whether I can arrange manual filling and drainage.
Energy label and repairability Compare the energy class, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco cycle duration, dB, noise class and repairability index. In an open-plan kitchen, I want to take noise, water and energy use into account rather than infer these factors from the format alone. ADEME reminds us that a 3 dB difference corresponds to an almost twofold increase in noise.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “compact” means “no installation requirements”

A plumbed-in mini dishwasher may require a direct water inlet. A model with a water tank removes this requirement, but you will still need to fill it and arrange proper drainage.

For every model, check the water supply, where the drain hose may discharge, the electrical supply specified in the instructions and the space available when the door is open.

  • Choosing based solely on width or the word “mini”

A 45 cm model often retains a depth of around 55 to 60 cm and a considerable height; a countertop appliance can take up a substantial part of your worktop.

Measure the width, depth, height beneath wall units, door clearance and the space needed for the pipes, then compare them with the specifications for the exact model.

  • Underestimating the difference in capacity between formats

Advertised capacities range from 2 standard place settings for the Daan Tech Bob to 6 place settings for the Candy countertop model, and up to 11 or 14 place settings on the Beko examples reviewed.

Assess your largest daily load, including bowls, pans and frying pans, then check the internal layout and the size limits for crockery in the instructions.

  • Comparing the energy class alone

The energy label brings together several measurements; noise can also become a deciding factor in a studio flat or open-plan kitchen. In France, the repairability index is compulsory for dishwashers, according to the Ministry of the Economy.

For each contender, record the class, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco cycle duration, dB, noise class and repairability index for the same model.

A guide to the brands

Daan Tech

French manufacturer offering Bob, an ultra-compact freestanding dishwasher designed for very small spaces.

  • According to Daan Tech’s specifications, Bob can operate with a 3.9 L tank or a water inlet, and has a capacity of 2 place settings according to the European standard.
  • The tank does not eliminate the need for manual filling or for arranging drainage via a hose.

Candy

The range includes countertop dishwashers as well as slim and standard formats for small kitchens.

  • Candy states that the CP 6E51LS is a 6-place-setting countertop appliance measuring 550 × 501 × 443 mm.
  • This model is specified with a direct connection to the water inlet, so it is not suitable for a home without a plumbing connection.

Bosch

The brand offers 45 cm freestanding and integrated dishwashers for small kitchens with a properly equipped cabinet space.

  • Bosch presents the 45 cm format as suitable for small kitchens; the SPS4EMW61E example measures 845 × 450 × 600 mm and uses 6.7 L per Eco cycle.
  • These dimensions and consumption figures apply to this specific example; installation requires water, electricity and drainage connections.

Beko

The freestanding range includes 45 cm models and higher-capacity standard 60 cm formats.

  • The cited specifications state up to 11 place settings for the 45 cm DVN06431A example and 14 place settings for the 60 cm DVN06430W.
  • Some inconsistencies appear in the labelling of the DVN06431A specifications: confirm the dimensions, capacity and instructions for the chosen SKU.

Brandt

French brand offering 45 cm and 60 cm dishwashers.

  • One of the brand’s specification sheets describes the DFC6519S as a 45 cm, 6-place-setting model.
  • This range information does not confirm the current specifications or availability of a particular model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dishwasher with a water tank work without plumbing?

It can avoid the need for a fixed water inlet if the model genuinely has an integrated water tank. For the Daan Tech Bob, the manufacturer specifies a 3.9 L tank or connection to the water inlet, but wastewater must still be discharged through a hose into a sink or another compatible outlet.

Does a countertop dishwasher need to be connected to a water inlet?

It depends on the model. Candy states that its CP 6E51LS is a countertop appliance with a direct water-inlet connection, so do not assume that a countertop appliance has a tank. Check the water supply and drainage separately in the product details or instructions.

Is a 45 cm model always preferable in a studio flat?

No. A 45 cm model is suitable if you have a cabinet space, the necessary connections and a larger daily load. It reduces the width, but the Bosch SPS4EMW61E example is also 600 mm deep and 845 mm high; a countertop mini dishwasher may be a better choice if floor space is limited.

Which energy-label information should you compare in France?

Compare the class from A to G, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, capacity in place settings, Eco cycle duration and noise level. ADEME explains that a 3 dB difference corresponds to an almost twofold increase in noise, which is particularly important in an open-plan kitchen.

Is the repairability index compulsory for a dishwasher sold in France?

Yes. The Ministry of the Economy states that dishwashers are among the products covered by the compulsory repairability index. The score out of 10 takes into account factors including documentation, dismantling, and the availability and price of spare parts; compare the index for the exact model.
