Who are these options suitable for?

Renters without a dedicated water supply

In a studio flat or kitchenette, you want to wash a small load of dishes without altering the plumbing. A model with a water tank is only an option if you can also fill the tank and direct the waste water into the sink.

Small households with existing connections

You don’t have room for a standard dishwasher, but there’s a water supply, a drain and a socket near the intended location. A plumbed-in compact model could be an option, provided you check its dimensions and capacity.

People with very limited worktop space

Before choosing an appliance, you’ll need to set aside a stable surface for it while still leaving room to open the door, reach the socket and position the drain hose as instructed.

What should you check before choosing?

In a small kitchen without space for a standard appliance, your choice depends first on the water connections and drainage actually available, then on the space you have and the dishes you need to wash.

Mini model with a water tank

Consider this if: there’s no dedicated water supply, but you can position the appliance and drain it in line with the instructions.

Bear in mind: you’ll need to fill the tank and arrange drainage every time you use it, depending on the model.

Plumbed-in compact model

Consider this if: a water supply, drain, socket and suitable space are already in place.

Bear in mind: it still depends on these connections, even though it’s smaller than a standard dishwasher.

Washing up by hand

Stick with this if: there’s nowhere to position, connect and drain an appliance properly.

Bear in mind: you’ll still need to wash the dishes by hand, but your worktop will remain free.

Criteria What to check Who is this for?
Water supply and drainage Check how the exact model is filled and whether its drain hose can reach the sink as instructed. Also check the electrical connection requirements in the manual. I don’t have a dedicated water supply and want to avoid plumbing work, but I don’t want to find out later that drainage isn’t practical; around 42% of consumers rank this independence as their top priority.
Capacity and dimensions Measure the appliance, the space needed to open its door and the room left for the hoses. Compare its stated capacity with the utensils you usually wash. In an already crowded kitchen, I want my everyday dishes to fit in the appliance without giving up all my worktop space; for around 33% of consumers, usable capacity in the available space comes ahead of other criteria.
Noise and consumption Check the energy label for the exact model for kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, and its noise level and class. ADEME explains that the stated consumption figures relate to the reference cycle. If my kitchen opens onto the living area, I want to take noise, water and electricity use into account before choosing; these aspects are the top priority for around 25% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing no water supply with no drainage

The tank means there’s no need to connect the water supply on models designed for this purpose, but the waste water still needs to be drained away. The Fnac listing for the Moulinex Studio MINID2SL, for example, describes draining into the sink.

Check the route from the hose to the sink and make sure it can be positioned as instructed for the model you’re considering.

  • Relying on place settings alone

The stated capacity doesn’t tell you by itself whether your plates or pans will fit in the rack. Nor does it tell you how much space you’ll need in front of the appliance to open the door.

Compare the dimensions of your usual utensils with the model’s interior layout, then measure the entire space where you plan to put it.

  • Comparing consumption figures from different programmes

The water and electricity figures on the energy label relate to a reference cycle. According to ADEME, electricity use is shown in kWh per 100 cycles and water use in litres per cycle.

Check the label for each model and compare figures calculated on the same basis. Don’t use one model’s figures to estimate another’s.

Brands and ranges to know

These models illustrate different formats. Check the water supply and installation requirements for each individual model rather than relying on the brand name alone.

Moulinex Studio

The Fnac listing for the MINID2SL describes a mini model with a capacity of 2 place settings, a 5 L water tank and a drain hose that empties into the sink.

  • This model doesn’t need a dedicated water supply.
  • Check the installation, drainage and electrical requirements in the manual for the model you choose; the MINID2SL’s specifications shouldn’t be assumed to apply to the MINID3SL.

Comfee

The models mentioned include a mini tabletop model with a water tank and a compact model advertised for 6 place settings.

  • The Joybuy page for the CDWMTO201D describes a built-in 5 L water tank.
  • You can’t assume that a Comfee model has the same tank, capacity or connections as another; check the product page and manual for the exact model.

Electrolux

Electrolux France describes the ESL2500RO as a 55 cm integrated compact dishwasher with a stated capacity of 6 place settings.

  • This model offers an integrated format to consider if your kitchen has a suitable cupboard space.
  • It doesn’t, by itself, solve the problem of having no water supply or drainage available.

Valberg

Electro Dépôt lists Valberg compact models in the 6S47 range, with a stated capacity of 6 place settings.

  • Their stated capacity gives you a comparison with the mini models for 2 or 3 place settings mentioned above.
  • Don’t assume a Valberg compact model works without a dedicated water supply: check its water supply and connections before choosing it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dishwasher with a water tank work without a water supply?

Yes, if the model is specifically designed to be supplied from its tank. The Fnac listing for the Moulinex Studio MINID2SL describes a 5 L tank filled from the top, as well as drainage into the sink. Before buying, check that you can position the hose as instructed.

What should you measure before choosing a mini dishwasher?

Measure the available width, depth and height, then allow enough space to open the door and route the drain hose. Also check that the surface is stable, that you can reach the sink and that the socket is suitably positioned, in line with the model’s instructions.

How can you compare the energy use and noise of two compact models?

Compare the energy labels for the exact models, taking their capacity and intended use into account. ADEME states that the label shows electricity use in kWh per 100 reference cycles and water use in litres per cycle; also check the noise information for each model.

What should you do if the appliance you receive doesn’t match its description in France?

Tell the seller about the discrepancy. For goods sold by a business to a consumer in France, the statutory guarantee of conformity is separate from any commercial warranty. The Ministry for the Economy explains that it applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods. Keep a copy of the product listing and the documents supplied with the appliance so you can explain the problem clearly.
