Which households are they for?

Households with a small fitted kitchen

You want to free up a space while keeping cooking, reheating and defrosting in one built-in appliance. First check the available housing space, acceptable cavity capacity and how often you would genuinely use the microwave functions. According to UFC-Que Choisir and the manufacturer specifications consulted, dimensions vary considerably between compact models.

People who often reheat and defrost food

You regularly reheat portions or leftovers and defrost food, while also wanting to cook or grill dishes. A combination oven may suit you when you use all these functions; however, the ADEME-INC study does not support assuming a general energy advantage.

Households that cook in batches

You prioritise oven dishes, roasts or cooking on several levels. A traditional convection oven is the simpler choice when this capacity comes first, with a separate microwave only if you still need to reheat and defrost food.

What to consider

Microwave and convection combination oven

Choose this if: one appliance needs to handle reheating, defrosting and cooking regularly in a limited space.

Keep in mind: housing requirements, capacity and power vary between models, and ADEME-INC measurements do not establish a universal energy saving.

Traditional convection oven

Choose this if: oven cooking, roasts and multi-level preparation are central to the way you cook.

Keep in mind: it does not offer the same convenience as a microwave for quick reheating or defrosting.

Separate oven and microwave

Choose this if: you need to use the microwave while a dish is cooking in a dedicated oven.

Keep in mind: this setup requires two spaces, two appliances to maintain and suitable installations for each one.

Priority What to check Your needs
Functions you will actually use Check the microwave, grill, convection and fan-assisted cooking modes separately. A grill alone does not necessarily replace a convection combination oven. I want to reheat, defrost and cook in the same appliance without paying for modes I will rarely use.
Cooking results Compare the capacity, number of shelf levels and tests involving dishes similar to those you prepare. Fan-assisted cooking may allow multi-level cooking on models that offer it. Depending on my dishes, I prioritise either microwave speed or the capacity to roast and cook several dishes in the oven.
Installation Record the housing dimensions H × W × D, depth, power supply and ventilation instructions for the exact model. Do not confuse microwave output power with total electrical power. My appliance must fit into the existing unit and kitchen installation without blocking air passages.
Cost and energy consumption Compare appliances with similar capacities, functions and installation conditions. For energy consumption, prioritise measurements carried out using the same protocol. I am looking for an appliance suited to the way I use it, without assuming that a combination model will automatically cost less to buy or run.
Maintenance and warranty Read the cleaning instructions for the door and ventilation system. Distinguish between statutory rights and optional commercial extended warranties. I want to manage moisture and routine maintenance, while understanding the protections that apply if something goes wrong.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a combination oven will always use less energy

The ADEME-INC test of 4 combination ovens and 10 convection ovens found varying results depending on the dishes, models and brands, with no clear universal advantage.

Compare the available measurements for scenarios similar to the way you cook, then prioritise the functions you genuinely need.

  • Measuring only the front of the oven

Two compact appliances that look similar may have different dimensions, power requirements and ventilation constraints. The specified ducts also help remove moisture.

Before ordering, check the exact model’s instructions for the housing dimensions H × W × D, depth, power supply, ventilation and connection requirements.

An appliance that is incompatible with the unit may require modifications to the cabinetry or installation.

  • Confusing a microwave with grill with a convection combination oven

A microwave with grill can brown certain foods, but an appliance intended to replace an oven must also have the right modes and capacity for the cooking you plan to do.

Check explicitly for a fan-assisted or convection function in the technical specifications, rather than looking only for a grill or automatic programmes.

  • Overlooking moisture and door maintenance

According to Electrolux support, moisture released during heating can escape through the ventilation ducts, including around the door on some compact ovens.

Follow the cleaning manual, wipe away splashes as instructed and do not remove the door to access the glass panels.

Technical assistance may be required when door removal is not intended to be carried out by the user.

Combination oven brand guide

Bosch

An example of a range of compact built-in microwave combination ovens. According to Bosch’s CMA583MS0 specifications, this model offers 44 L, measures 454 × 594 × 570 mm and has 900 W of microwave power.

  • The model specifications list fan-assisted cooking, 15 automatic programmes and hydrolytic cleaning.
  • These functions, dimensions and features apply to the CMA583MS0, not to all Bosch ovens.

Electrolux

An example of a compact built-in combination oven combining microwave and oven functions. The Electrolux specifications for the KVLAE2ST state a 45 cm housing and a 44 L cavity.

  • According to the manufacturer, this model offers defrosting, reheating, fan-assisted cooking and microwave combination modes, with stated total power of 3,000 W.
  • These specifications do not prove that every dish will cook better or use less energy than in a traditional oven.

Siemens

An example of a range that includes compact microwave combination ovens and 60 cm models. Siemens presents the CM724G1B1 as an integrated 60 × 45 cm model with a 45 L capacity.

  • The CM724G1B1 specifications state dimensions of 455 × 594 × 548 mm, 900 W of microwave power and a 45 L capacity.
  • Always compare the dimensions with the housing plan and the capacity your household needs.

Frequently asked questions

Does a combination oven always replace a traditional oven and a microwave?

No. It can combine microwave and oven functions in a single appliance, which is useful in a kitchen where space is limited. However, the ADEME-INC study does not demonstrate a clear universal advantage over a convection oven; if you often cook on several levels or need to use the microwave while a dish is in the oven, two separate appliances remain a sensible choice.

Which dimensions should you check before buying a built-in combination oven?

Measure the height, width and depth of the unit housing, then compare them with the installation diagram for the exact model. Formats are not standardised: Electrolux, for example, specifies a housing of 450 × 560 × 550 mm for the KVLAE2ST, while Bosch specifies 454 × 594 × 570 mm for the CMA583MS0; these measurements cannot be applied to other references.

Should you check total power rather than microwave power alone?

Yes. Microwave power alone does not describe the electrical requirements of a combination oven. Electrolux’s KVLAE2ST, for example, states total electrical power of 3,000 W; check the manufacturer’s requirements and the existing installation, and have the connection checked by a suitably qualified professional if in doubt.

Can you block ventilation in a small kitchen?

No. According to Electrolux support, moisture released during heating can escape through the ventilation ducts, including around the door on some compact appliances. Follow the installation diagram and the clearances specified for your chosen model.

Is an extended warranty necessary?

Not automatically. The Institut national de la consommation states that the legal guarantee of conformity and the guarantee against hidden defects are compulsory in France, while a commercial warranty is optional. Compare the cover, exclusions and cost of the extension with the applicable statutory protections before purchasing it.
