Who is it for?

Busy users who make one cup at a time

For a short, repeatable break with minimal preparation, compare capsules and pods first, then check the consumables system and its availability. Que Choisir, Nespresso France and Philips France distinguish between these formats.

Regular coffee drinkers happy to maintain the machine

Bean-to-cup machines or portafilters are a good choice if you want to choose your own coffee without relying on pre-portioned servings, and are happy to clean the machine, empty the coffee grounds and descale it as instructed. Que Choisir and De’Longhi France highlight the importance of maintenance.

Households serving several coffees or larger drinks

If several cups are prepared one after another, compare the carafe, water tank and preparation time rather than limiting yourself to espresso machines. Philips France, for example, describes a hybrid pod and filter solution.

Buying priorities

Start with the drinks you usually have, then check the consumables, maintenance requirements and the space actually available around the machine.

Priority What to check Your needs
Drink formats Preparation type: capsules, pods, ground coffee or beans; carafe capacity; milk functions if you will genuinely use them. I want to prepare the drinks I actually enjoy: a short espresso, lungo, large coffee, milky drink or several cups.
Consumables and refilling Exact capsule or pod system; stated compatibility; capacity of the water tank, bean hopper and collection container. I prefer to plan for recurring purchases and avoid relying on a portion format that does not suit the way I use the machine.
Maintenance Access to the water tank, drip tray and containers; removable parts; alerts and the model’s descaling procedure. My machine must suit the time I can spend cleaning it after breaks and carrying out periodic maintenance.
Space and pace Dimensions allowing access to the water tank; speed for one or several cups; capacity suited to daily consumption. I am looking for a practical appliance for my worktop, without unnecessary waiting when several coffees are requested.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a capsule machine without identifying its system

Nespresso’s Original and Vertuo systems use different drink formats and are not one universal standard. Que Choisir also states that many machines are limited to one type of capsule.

Make a note of the exact system before ordering, check compatibility on the product page and find out where to buy refills.

Choosing the wrong format could leave you with capsules you cannot use.

  • Comparing the purchase price alone

Consumables, any filters and descaling products are all part of regular use. Per-cup cost comparisons published by Que Choisir in 2009 cannot be used to establish a current price.

Work out your budget using the current price of compatible refills and the number of coffees you usually have each week.

Also allow for beans, pods or capsules, as well as the maintenance consumables specified in the instructions.

  • Underestimating the maintenance required for a grinder or portafilter

Water tanks, drip trays, collection containers and, depending on the model, the infuser all require regular maintenance. For some grinders, the descaling frequency depends in particular on water hardness, according to De’Longhi France.

Read the instructions before buying and choose a machine whose containers, tanks and maintenance programmes fit your routine.

Maintenance takes time and may require descaler or accessories approved by the manufacturer.

  • Ruling out a filter coffee machine when serving several cups

A single-cup espresso machine can make serving several people take longer, whereas a filter solution prepares a full carafe. The Philips Senseo Switch HD6592/65 advertises an insulated 7-cup carafe, a feature specific to this model.

Count the cups prepared at the same time, then compare capacity, preparation time and the space required for the carafe.

Brand guide

Nespresso

The brand distinguishes between the Original and Vertuo systems: Nespresso France presents Original for formats from ristretto to lungo, and Vertuo for formats ranging from espresso to mug-sized coffees.

  • Different drink formats depending on the system.
  • Original and Vertuo are separate systems: do not assume their capsules are interchangeable.

Philips SENSEO

The range covers soft pod machines and includes hybrid pod and filter models, such as the Switch.

  • The Switch HD6592/65 advertises one or two pod-made cups in under a minute and an insulated 7-cup carafe.
  • These features apply to this specific model, not to all Senseo machines.

De’Longhi

The brand offers bean-to-cup espresso machines ranging from models focused on black coffee to appliances that prepare milk-based drinks.

  • The French range includes bean-to-cup machines and a variety of recipes.
  • Descaling should follow the model’s alerts and instructions; its frequency depends in particular on water hardness, according to De’Longhi France.

Sage

Sage offers portafilter machines designed to give you control over grinding, extraction and milk frothing, including models with an integrated grinder.

  • According to Sage, the Barista Express lets you grind beans just before extraction and prepare microfoam milk.
  • Manual preparation involves more steps and cleaning than a capsule system or automatic bean-to-cup machine.

Melitta

Melitta offers bean-to-cup machines, filter coffee machines and filter coffee machines with an integrated grinder.

  • Filter coffee machines with an integrated conical grinder are worth considering if you want to switch to beans.
  • Check the exact model’s dimensions, settings and cleaning requirements before choosing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Nespresso-compatible capsules with any Nespresso machine?

No. Check the system stated on the machine and the packaging: Nespresso France presents Original for drinks from ristretto to lungo, while Vertuo uses its own capsules for formats ranging from espresso to mug-sized coffees. These systems should not be considered interchangeable.

How often should a coffee machine be descaled?

There is no universal schedule. Que Choisir states that guidance varies by manufacturer and usage; for its bean-to-cup espresso machines, De’Longhi explains that the need depends in particular on water hardness. Follow the model’s instructions and alerts.

Can coffee capsules be recycled in France?

According to ADEME’s guide, aluminium or plastic capsules should be placed in the sorting bin, bag or container for paper and packaging. Check the material stated on the packaging and your local recycling instructions.

Can a filter coffee machine replace an espresso machine?

Yes, if you mainly prepare large coffees or several cups in succession, but it does not produce the same type of drink as an espresso machine. First compare the cup format you want, then the carafe capacity and preparation time.
