Who are these options for?

Campers who already own a capsule machine

If you’re taking your machine with you, its system determines which format to buy. Nespresso® Original and Lavazza A Modo Mio capsules, for example, are designed for different systems, as Carte Noire and Lavazza explain.

Campers with an electric hook-up

Before taking a machine, compare its rating plate with the power supply and hook-up rules at the campsite. Senseo lists a voltage of 220–240 V and a power rating of 1 450 W for its Original machine; these figures don’t apply to other models.

Campers mindful of waste or grinding

If you’d like to fill your capsules with your own choice of ground coffee, check which accessories you’ll need: Malongo says the lids for its reusable Caps’me capsules are sold separately. Also check what recycling facilities will be available during your stay.

What should you check before you go?

First, work out which brewing method you’ll have available, then choose the right coffee format. After that, consider how much to take, how much preparation is involved and how to recycle the packaging.

FactorWhat to checkRelevant consumers
Compatibility The exact system name on the machine and the matching wording on the packet; in particular, check the difference between Nespresso® Original and Vertuo. I want to be sure I can use the capsules I’ve brought with my machine, rather than relying on how they look. Around 36% of consumers put compatibility first.
Power supply Your machine’s voltage and power rating, and the socket and hook-up conditions at your pitch. Without a suitable socket, my electric machine won’t let me make the coffee I had planned. Power supply is the top priority for around 29% of consumers.
Waste and storage Space for your coffee portions and waste; available recycling facilities and, for a reusable capsule, lids to bring along. I’d rather know where to store used capsules and where to dispose of them during my stay. This comes before other factors for around 21% of consumers.
Preferred drink Espresso or longer coffee, the stated strength and the number of portions you’ll need for your stay, once you’ve chosen a compatible format. Everyone in our group likes their coffee differently, so I want to bring portions that suit the cups we’ll be making. Around 14% of consumers prioritise their choice of drink above all else.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing up beans, capsules and pods

Coffee beans need to be ground before brewing. You can’t put them straight into a capsule or pod machine.

Before buying your coffee, decide which brewing method you’ll actually have available: an integrated grinder, a separate grinder and suitable coffee maker, a capsule machine or a pod machine.

  • Seeing “Nespresso® compatible” without checking the system

Carte Noire’s compatible capsules are designed for Nespresso® Original machines, not Vertuo machines. The system name matters more than how similar the capsules look.

Make a note of your machine’s model before you shop, then check it against the compatibility information on the packet.

  • Taking a machine without checking the pitch

An electric machine needs a suitable power supply. For this specific model, Senseo lists 220–240 V and 1 450 W for its Original machine.

Check the rating plate on the machine you’re taking and ask the campsite which sockets and hook-up conditions are available.

  • Forgetting what’s involved with reusable capsules

A reusable capsule still needs to be filled, and it must be compatible with your machine. The Caps’me capsules featured by Malongo are designed for Nespresso® machines, excluding Vertuo.

Bring ground coffee, check which consumables you’ll need and find out what recycling facilities are available where you’re staying.

The lids for the Caps’me capsules mentioned here are sold separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put coffee beans in a capsule machine?

No. Beans need to be ground before brewing and can’t be used in place of a capsule or pod. You’ll need an integrated grinder, or a separate grinder and a suitable brewing method.

How can you avoid buying incompatible capsules?

Match the exact system name on the machine with the name on the packet. Carte Noire, for example, distinguishes its capsules for Nespresso® Original from those for Vertuo machines, while Lavazza A Modo Mio capsules are designed for machines in that range.

Will a pod machine work at every campsite pitch?

Not necessarily: its power requirements must match the socket and hook-up conditions at your pitch. Senseo lists 220–240 V and 1 450 W for its Original machine; check the figures for your own model with the campsite.

What should you do with aluminium or plastic capsules after your stay?

In France, ADEME advises putting aluminium or plastic capsules in the recycling bin, bag or container for paper and packaging. During your stay, check the facilities and instructions displayed by the campsite or local council.

Will a reusable capsule work with any machine?

No: it needs to match your machine’s system. Malongo says its Caps’me capsules are compatible with Nespresso® machines, excluding Vertuo. You’ll also need ground coffee, and the capsules need to be filled using lids sold separately.
