What should you check before buying?
If you’re cooking several meals, first work out how much each recipe needs. Then choose containers whose size and storage instructions after opening suit the way you cook.
| Criteria |
What to check |
Who it matters to |
| Amount for several meals |
The net volume and number of units needed for your planned recipes; check that the product is described as culinary coconut milk. |
If I’m planning several dishes, I want enough coconut milk overall while keeping any extra units sealed. Around 43% of consumers would prioritise the total amount above all else. |
| Leftovers after opening |
How much you’ll need to open and the storage instructions for the specific product you choose. |
For an occasional small recipe, I’d rather not open more than I can use within the stated time. Around 29% of consumers would make avoiding leftovers their priority. |
| Suitability for the recipe |
The ingredients list, the percentage of coconut extract where stated, and the fat content per 100 ml. |
When a recipe calls for culinary coconut milk, I want to choose that category and check its ingredients rather than relying on the volume alone. Around 28% of consumers would put suitability for the recipe first. |

Frequently asked questions
Can a 1-litre coconut plant-based drink replace culinary coconut milk?
Not automatically: Carrefour lists Alpro’s 1-litre coconut plant-based drink as a separate category from its culinary coconut milks. Check the product description and ingredients, as well as what your recipe calls for, before swapping one for the other.
How long can you keep coconut milk after opening?
Follow the instructions for the specific product: Joybuy’s product information for Vietcoco’s 400 ml pack gives a 24-hour limit, Auchan says to use its 500 ml carton within 48 hours, and Suzi Wan says to keep its 330 ml carton in the fridge for five days. Don’t assume these time limits apply to other products.
What should you look for on the label when comparing two coconut milks?
Start by comparing the product description, net quantity, ingredients list and nutritional information. The Directorate-General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control lists these among the labelling information for pre-packed foods. For your recipe, pay particular attention to the fat content per 100 ml.
Is the percentage of coconut extract enough to help you choose?
No: it describes one part of the formulation, but doesn’t by itself tell you whether the product is right for your recipe. Also compare the other ingredients, fat content, amount you’ll need to open and storage instructions for the specific product you’re considering.
