Who is this choice for?

Reaching under deep-set furniture

You need to guide a brush right to the back of a bed or piece of furniture, and want to check that it will really fit rather than relying on a general promise of manoeuvrability. Que Choisir Ensemble and Les Numériques also cover access under furniture.

Long cleaning sessions without interruption

You clean several areas in one go and need to weigh up usable battery life, a compatible spare battery or a cylinder vacuum with no battery limit. Que Choisir Ensemble explains how it measures battery life in its tests of rechargeable stick vacuums.

Keeping up with regular maintenance

You want to be able to identify the parts you need, including a battery that matches the exact model, and factor in ongoing maintenance. ADEME explains that the repairability index covers criteria including parts, ease of dismantling and documentation.

Which features should you compare before buying?

Start by measuring the clearance under your furniture, then compare access, battery life for your intended use and maintenance options according to what matters most to you.

What matters to you What to check Who it matters most to
Reaching the back of the space under furniture Measure the clearance and depth; check that the floorhead, wand and vacuum body can fit underneath. If I need to clean right to the back of a bed, I want the floorhead and body to fit without moving the furniture; around 36% of consumers prioritise this kind of access.
Finishing a session without recharging Compare battery life with the floorhead and mode you plan to use; check that any spare battery is compatible. If I need to clean several rooms in a row, stopping to recharge can get in the way; around 29% of consumers prioritise being able to finish a session in one go.
Maintaining the appliance over time Note the exact model and part references; check the repairability index shown for the model. I want to be able to identify the right parts for my appliance to keep it in use; around 21% of consumers prioritise maintenance and parts replacement.
Letting a machine take care of the floors Measure the routes and thresholds; check what maintenance the robot and, where applicable, its docking station need. If I’d rather not guide the brush myself, I consider which areas the robot can reach and what maintenance will still be needed; around 14% of consumers prioritise automated floor care.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing maximum battery life without checking the conditions

A run time quoted for handheld use in Eco mode doesn’t necessarily reflect using the floorhead in the mode you need at home. Rowenta quotes up to 45 minutes for the X-Force Flex 9.60 Animal in handheld mode and Eco mode.

Compare run times for the floorhead and mode you intend to use, then separately check the spare battery’s reference and compatibility.

  • Assuming a flexible wand guarantees access

The floorhead, wand or vacuum body may catch on the furniture, even if the wand bends. For a robot, you’ll also need to consider the clearance and the route to the area you want to clean.

Measure the opening at several points and check the dimensions of every part that needs to fit under the furniture.

  • Confusing the repairability index with a cleaning rating

The index covers repairability criteria, including ease of dismantling, documentation and parts. It doesn’t measure whether the vacuum can clean under furniture or how effectively it picks up dust.

Check the cleaning information, the index shown for the model and the references of any parts you might need separately.

Brands to consider by range

Rowenta

The X-Force Flex range is worth considering if you’re looking for a stick vacuum with a flexible wand. Check the accessories and batteries for each model.

  • Rowenta quotes up to 45 minutes for the X-Force Flex 9.60 Animal in handheld mode and Eco mode.
  • This figure doesn’t tell you how long it will run with a floorhead. Also check that the wand and floorhead will fit under your furniture.

Bosch

For the Unlimited 7 BBS711W, Bosch specifies a flexible tube and a replaceable battery.

  • These features may suit the access and battery replacement needs of this particular model.
  • They don’t tell you how long it will run with a particular floorhead or how much clearance it needs under furniture.

Miele

The Guard L1 bagged cylinder vacuum is worth considering if you’d prefer a corded model with a hose and suitable floorhead.

  • Miele specifies a 12 m operating radius for the Guard L1 in Nordic blue.
  • You’ll need to manage the cord and buy bags. Check which floorhead is included, whether it suits your flooring and whether it fits under your furniture.

iRobot

Roomba models can be considered as a helping hand for maintaining accessible floors without manual guidance.

  • iRobot Assistance France recommends at least 92 mm of clearance for a Roomba to pass under a bed or piece of furniture.
  • Fitting underneath doesn’t guarantee a particular cleaning result. Maintenance and battery removal procedures vary by model.

Shark

The PowerDetect IP3251EUT is an example of a stick vacuum with a flexible wand to consider if access under furniture is a priority.

  • Les Numériques notes that this model’s wand can help it reach under furniture.
  • Les Numériques also reports that the battery-life indicator is not very precise, and that filtration differs between the original and updated versions of this model.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether a brush will fit under my bed?

Measure the clearance at the entrance and further under the bed, then compare it with the floorhead, wand and the part of the vacuum that needs to go underneath. A flexible wand helps you position the vacuum, but doesn’t guarantee that the whole unit will fit.

How can I check whether a battery can be replaced?

Note the appliance’s full model reference, then check the part reference and its compatibility list. Rowenta lists battery ZR009711 for the X-Force Flex 9.60 range, while Bosch specifies a replaceable battery for the Unlimited 7 BBS711W. Availability may change.

What maintenance does a robot vacuum need when used under furniture?

Check for obstacles and clean the dust bin and brushes according to the model’s instructions. A docking station may change the tasks involved, but doesn’t eliminate all maintenance.

Which consumables should I allow for?

Check which parts and consumables are suitable for the model you choose. A bagged cylinder vacuum needs compatible bags, while a cordless vacuum may need a compatible replacement battery.

Does the repairability index apply to vacuum cleaners sold in France?

Yes. Since 4 November 2022, the DGCCRF has included corded, cordless and robot vacuum cleaners among the products that must display a repairability index. The ministry responsible for the ecological transition says the index is displayed in shops and online. It tells you about repairability, not cleaning performance.
