Stationery, video games and collectables: how to choose without wasting money

Buying stationery, video games or collectables can quickly turn into a disappointment. An attractive cover doesn’t guarantee a notebook will be pleasant to use, a special edition doesn’t necessarily include a disc, and a sticker album may require dozens of extra packets before it’s complete.

To shop with confidence, it’s best to separate the intended use, the features that are actually stated, and the practical constraints. Here are the points to check before choosing an A5 spiral notebook, a Panini album, an adult LEGO set or an Xbox Series X|S game in a Steelbook edition.

Common pitfalls before you buy

1. Mistaking an appealing presentation for what’s actually included

Licensed products and collector’s editions often focus on their appearance. But a metal case can contain a disc, a download code or simply a decorative accessory. The Premium Steelbook edition of Avowed, for example, is described as a “Code in a Box”: it includes a Steelbook case and a digital code, but no physical disc.

Before ordering, always check the Media type and Box contents sections. This habit is especially useful when buying a gift for a collector.

2. Overlooking the size and available space

A LEGO book nook or a collectable album doesn’t store away like a simple desk accessory. The LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings Balrog Book Nook measures approximately 44 cm wide when opened, while the Toy Story Zigzag Bookshelf model reaches about 43 cm wide.

Measure your shelf, desk or bookcase before placing an order. Also consider the depth needed to handle the model or consult the books placed around it.

3. Relying only on the number of pieces or pages

A large number of LEGO pieces, stickers or pages doesn’t necessarily mean the product meets your needs. A 120-page notebook may be perfectly fine for daily notes, but prove too limited for a creative journal. Conversely, a Panini album containing several hundred stickers implies an ongoing budget if you plan to complete the collection.

The real cost can include refills, extra packets, compatible accessories and even the time spent assembling.

The criteria to check before choosing

Stationery: size, paper and binding

For studying, work or journaling, the A5 size of 148 × 210 mm remains easy to carry while offering enough space for everyday notes. The Deli notebooks shown here offer 60 sheets, i.e. 120 pages, on 70 g/m² paper, with a spiral binding. The version with 80 sheets, i.e. 160 pages, will be more suitable for people who write regularly.

The spiral allows the notebook to open flat, but check its diameter and the cover’s rigidity if you plan to carry it every day. The Pure Time, Light Tone, 0 Series and Rhythm ranges offer several visual styles without changing the main stated features.

For Harry Potter stationery sets, also check the exact contents. The Hermione Granger and Hogwarts sets each include two notebooks and a wand-shaped pen, in a presentation licensed by Wizarding World.

Sticker albums: starting contents and recommended age

To assess a Panini album, three things matter: the total number of stickers in the collection, the number of packets supplied, and the recommended age. PANINI Le Monde des Animaux states a collection of 184 stickers, with a 32-page album and three packets of five stickers, giving 15 stickers in total in the starter pack.

The PANINI Les Sisters album includes 204 stickers, 36 of which are shiny, in a 32-page album with a centre insert. These details help you anticipate the budget for extra packets and avoid confusing a starter pack with the complete collection.

Both products are recommended from age 3. However, small parts pose a choking hazard: these albums are not suitable for children under 36 months and must be used under adult supervision.

Games and tech accessories: media, compatibility and power

For an Xbox Series X|S game, make sure you distinguish between a physical version and a digital code. Control Resonant – Steelbook Edition is described as a French physical version on Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, accompanied by a metal case. The game is rated PEGI 16.

For a 65 W USB-C GaN charger, check the number of ports, the maximum stated power and the compatible devices. The toocki wall charger has three ports and delivers a maximum power of 65 W. The actual power distributed can vary depending on how many devices are plugged in and the cable used. A laptop, tablet and smartphone don’t necessarily share the power in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sticker album really cost?

The price shown at the start only represents part of the budget. Check the number of stickers supplied, the total number planned for the collection and the price of extra packets. An album of 184 or 204 stickers can therefore lead to several additional purchases if you want to complete it.

Is an A5 spiral notebook suitable for daily journaling?

Yes. The A5 size is easy to carry and offers enough space for notes, lists and short entries. For intensive use, compare the total number of pages: with its 160 pages, one model will need replacing less often than a 120-page notebook.

What’s the difference between a Steelbook edition and a standard game?

Steelbook primarily refers to a metal case, usually associated with a collector’s presentation. The term alone doesn’t tell you what media the game contains. Always check whether it includes a disc or a digital code, as well as the language, platform and PEGI rating.
