Who is it for?

People fitting out a fitted kitchen

You have an opening in your kitchen units and need to choose between a door panel that fully conceals the appliance and a visible control panel. Measure the opening and check that the door panel and hinges are compatible.

Replacing an old integrated dishwasher

Keep the existing opening dimensions, plinth and door panel, then check the fixing system for the exact model. An identical width does not guarantee that the door and panel will fit in the same way.

Buyers who do not need a door panel

A freestanding appliance may be suitable if no unit door panel is planned and the chosen location has enough space and the necessary connections.

Buying priorities

Fully integrated

Choose this if: you want the appliance to disappear behind a door panel that matches your units and your kitchen has a suitable opening.

You will need: a compatible door panel, its fixing system and suitable installation; the controls are accessible when the door is open.

Semi-integrated

Choose this if: an opening and door panel are provided, but you want to keep the controls visible on the front.

You will need: the same opening and door-panel checks as with a fully integrated model, as fixing systems are not universal.

Freestanding

Choose this if: you do not want to add a matching door panel or if reusing the existing plinth and panel would be difficult.

Check: whether the top can be removed before installing it under a worktop; a freestanding appliance does not become integrated simply by being placed there.

Priority What to check Your needs
Kitchen compatibility Measure the internal width, height and depth of the opening. Also check the plinth, available depth, door panel and hinge or fixing system. I want to install the appliance without unnecessarily modifying the units and be able to open the door without it catching.
Level of integration Compare the control position, whether a door panel is required and the door type: fully integrated, semi-integrated or freestanding with its own casing. I prefer either a continuous door panel matching the units, visible controls or an appliance that needs no additional casing.
Size and capacity Start by choosing a width that is compatible with the opening. GIFAM states that a 60 cm format generally accommodates 12 to 15 place settings, compared with 9 to 10 place settings for 45 cm. The discreet appearance must not reduce the space needed for my everyday dishes and large serving dishes.
Everyday use Compare the energy label, Eco programme water consumption, noise level, capacity and washing and drying results between models of a similar size. In an open-plan kitchen, I want to be able to compare the stated noise level; I also want to assess consumption on a like-for-like basis.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Relying solely on a width of 45 cm or 60 cm

Two appliances with the same width may have different requirements for height, depth, door and door panel. An incompatibility may prevent correct installation or normal door opening.

Record the three internal dimensions of the opening and consult the installation diagram for the exact model. Also confirm the plinth and door panel with the kitchen fitter or installer.

Depending on the kitchen configuration, the opening, plinth or door panel may need to be modified.

  • Confusing a freestanding appliance under a worktop with an integrated model

A freestanding dishwasher already has its own casing, whereas an integrated model is designed to receive a door panel and fit into the kitchen units.

If you simply want to place the appliance under a worktop, confirm that the top can be removed. If a matching door panel is essential, look for an integrated model that is compatible with it.

Choosing an integrated appliance may require an additional unit door panel and its installation.

  • Assuming that all door-panel fixings are compatible

Hinge and fixing methods vary between appliances and kitchens. IKEA specifically points out that some kits intended for non-IKEA dishwashers are incompatible with several brands.

Check the assembly diagram, door-panel reference and any required kits before ordering. Do not assume compatibility based solely on the appliance brand.

A kit, installation service or new door panel may be needed if the fitting method is unsuitable.

  • Choosing the installation type assuming it guarantees performance

The installation type mainly concerns fitting and appearance. Washing, drying, consumption and noise vary from one model and programme to another.

Once you have selected a compatible installation type, compare the energy label, noise level and capacity. Where available, also consult independent tests for your shortlisted models.

Relevant brands for integrated kitchen installation

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers fully integrated and semi-integrated built-in dishwashers in 45 cm and 60 cm formats.

  • Bosch highlights the importance of measuring the opening and choosing between a fixed or sliding hinge for installation.
  • The brand states that certain fully integrated models are compatible with IKEA units; nevertheless, check the specific model, door panel and kitchen worktop concerned.

Siemens

Siemens offers fully integrated dishwashers, including some models with a varioHinge system and detailed technical specifications.

  • For the SN73HX16CE, Siemens states dimensions of 815 × 598 × 550 mm, 9.0 l per Eco cycle, noise class B and a varioHinge system.
  • These specifications apply to this specific model: always compare the installation instructions with your opening and door panel.

IKEA

IKEA is a useful reference when the dishwasher is bought with an IKEA kitchen, thanks to its guidance on door panels, feet and kits.

  • IKEA states that its own dishwashers do not need the BEHJÄLPLIG kit for their door panels and are installed between two units.
  • For a non-IKEA appliance, check the fixing system for the exact model and kitchen, as some installation methods are incompatible.

Miele

Miele offers fully integrated dishwashers in standard and XXL formats, designed to be concealed behind a decorative door panel.

  • The range includes models in different heights, which can be useful when the space beneath the worktop requires a particular dimension.
  • The height, plinth and door panel must be checked for each reference; the existence of an XXL format does not confirm compatibility with a particular kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fully integrated and a semi-integrated dishwasher?

A fully integrated dishwasher is concealed behind a unit door panel, with its controls on the top edge of the door. A semi-integrated dishwasher is also fitted into an opening and receives a door panel, but retains a visible control panel on the front.

Can a built-in dishwasher be used freestanding without a door panel?

This is generally not suitable: built-in models are designed to be integrated into kitchen units and receive a door panel. If no casing is planned, choose a freestanding model instead.

What measurements should you take before ordering?

Measure the internal width, height and depth of the opening, then compare them with the installation dimensions for the exact model. Also check the plinth height, door panel, hinges or fixings and the required connections.

How can you compare water, energy and noise between two models?

Compare appliances in the same category and with a similar capacity using the energy label. The French Ministry for Ecological Transition states that it allows products in the same category to be compared; for dishwashers, look in particular at the energy class, energy use per 100 cycles, Eco programme water consumption and noise information.

Could incorrect installation be covered by the legal guarantee of conformity?

Yes, in specific circumstances: the DGCCRF states that the legal guarantee of conformity may apply where installation carried out by the seller was not completed correctly, or where incomplete or incorrect instructions caused an installation carried out by the consumer to fail. It applies to goods sold by a professional to a private individual; also check the terms of the installation service you choose.
