Who are these formats for?

For several snacks or lunchboxes

A multipack lets you spread your purchase across several occasions without choosing one large bar. Carrefour, Auchan and E.Leclerc catalogues include formats such as 2 × 100 g, 3 × 100 g and 5 × 100 g. However, the number of bars doesn’t guarantee that portions are individually wrapped.

For entertaining over tea

If you’re serving chocolate with biscuits to share, the total weight and choice of recipes may matter more than the number of bars. Lindt offers a 900 g gift box, while Milka also describes a box of 10 × 100 g. Store the chocolate according to the instructions on the packaging.

For checking ingredients

If the recipe or allergens are important to your choice, read the ingredients and nutritional information for each product. The European Commission states that a nutrition declaration is required for most prepacked foods, while front-of-pack nutrition labelling is voluntary.

What should you check before choosing?

For tea, biscuits or snacks to take with you, first decide whether you need bars to share out, a choice of recipes or enough chocolate for everyone to enjoy.

Multipacks of bars

Worth considering: if you want separate bars for several snacks or lunchboxes.

Bear in mind: a multipack doesn’t mean that each portion has its own wrapper.

Larger format or gift box

Worth considering: if you’re serving chocolate to several people at home.

Bear in mind: choose an amount that suits the occasions you have planned and can be stored properly once opened.

Individual bars

Worth considering: if everyone prefers a different recipe with their tea.

Bear in mind: check the ingredients for each recipe rather than assuming the details for one bar apply to all the others.

Criteria What to check Who is it for?
Sharing out the bars Number and weight of the bars; whether they may be individually wrapped. When preparing several snacks or lunchboxes, I want to share out my purchase without opening a large bar every time. Around 42% of consumers would prioritise this above all else.
Ingredients and allergens Ingredients and allergens for the exact recipe; sugar per 100 g and, if stated, per portion. If the ingredients matter to the people sharing the chocolate, I need to be able to read the label for each recipe. This would be the main priority for around 33% of consumers.
Amount to share Total weight and choice of recipes in the multipack, gift box or individually bought bars. When serving tea and biscuits, I want an amount that suits the people there and their preferences. Around 25% of consumers would put sharing in first place.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • Confusing a multipack with individually wrapped portions

A multipack contains several items, but that doesn’t necessarily mean each portion has its own wrapper. For example, Auchan states that the Milka 5 × 100 g multipack on its product page doesn’t include individual sachets.

For a lunchbox, distinguish between the number of bars and how each portion is packaged, and check the storage instructions.

  • Assuming every chocolate bar has to display Nutri-Score

According to the European Commission, a nutrition declaration is required for most prepacked foods, but front-of-pack nutrition information is voluntary under current EU rules.

Compare the nutritional information per 100 g and the ingredients for the exact recipe, whether or not it displays a Nutri-Score.

  • Assuming two recipes have the same allergens

Carrefour’s product page for a Milka milk chocolate and hazelnut bar lists hazelnuts and soya, among other ingredients, and warns that it may contain traces of other nuts and wheat. This information doesn’t apply to every bar from the brand.

Check the ingredients and allergen information for every variety you plan to serve.

Brands to know

Milka

Carrefour and Auchan list multipacks of 2 × 100 g and 5 × 100 g; Milka also describes a gift box of 10 × 100 g.

  • These formats give you a choice between several separate bars and a larger gift box.
  • The 5 × 100 g multipack described by Auchan doesn’t include individual sachets. Check the allergens for your chosen recipe too.

Lindt

Lindt’s French catalogue features bars in different recipes, as well as a 900 g gift box.

  • Different recipes can suit different tastes when sharing tea.
  • A large bar or gift box isn’t necessarily packaged in portions that are suitable for lunchboxes.

Carrefour

Depending on the range, the retailer’s catalogue includes individual bars and multipacks of 2 × 100 g, 3 × 100 g or 2 × 200 g.

  • The different weights let you compare several ways of sharing out a purchase.
  • Check the format and recipe of the product you choose: the features of one range don’t necessarily apply to the others.

E.Leclerc : ECO+ et Marque Repère

E.Leclerc lists, among other products, ECO+ multipacks of 5 × 100 g and Marque Repère bars sold individually or in multipacks.

  • These products offer a choice of bar quantities and weights to suit your plans.
  • The product page for a Tablette d’Or product advises contacting your E.Leclerc store to check availability; check the details for the product you want.

Frequently asked questions

Does the soda tax apply to chocolate bars in France?

No. The levy described by the French Ministry of the Economy applies to sugary drinks, not solid chocolate bars. However, if you want to compare recipes, you should still check the sugar content in the nutritional information.

Is Nutri-Score compulsory on a chocolate bar?

No. The European Commission explains that front-of-pack nutrition labelling is voluntary under current EU rules, while a nutrition declaration is required for most prepacked foods. Check this declaration and the ingredients for the bar in question.

Is a multipack of bars always suitable for lunchboxes?

No. Several bars don’t necessarily mean several individually wrapped portions. For example, Auchan’s product page for the Milka 5 × 100 g multipack states that it doesn’t include individual sachets. Check the packaging and storage instructions for your chosen product before planning to take it with you.

How can I check allergens in an assortment?

Read the ingredients and allergen information for each recipe, even if the bars are from the same brand. Carrefour’s product page for a Milka milk chocolate and hazelnut recipe lists hazelnuts and soya, among other ingredients, and warns that it may contain traces of other nuts and wheat. Don’t assume this information applies to a different variety.
