Before you get started, a few simple criteria will help you find the product that's right for you.
Chinese cuisine is incredibly diverse, and its braised dishes are no exception. There are two main flavour profiles:
A good Asian spice packet should contain clearly identifiable ingredients. You'll typically find star anise, cinnamon, fennel seeds, Sichuan peppercorns, and cloves.
Be sure to check the allergen list. Many preparations contain soy (via powdered soy sauce), celery, mustard, or sesame. A manufacturer's transparency on this is a mark of quality and safety.
Spice mixes come in different forms:
The choice depends on your preference: a clear, infused broth, or a thicker sauce that clings to the food.

1. How do I use a Chinese braising spice packet? It's incredibly simple. Place the spice packet in a large pot with water, light and dark soy sauce, a little sugar (depending on the mix), and Shaoxing cooking wine. Bring to a boil, add your meat (which should be blanched beforehand to remove impurities), then reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the meat is perfectly tender.
2. How long does it take to braise the meat? The cooking time depends on the type and cut of meat. For cuts like pork belly or beef shank, allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours over low heat to achieve a melt-in-your-mouth texture. For chicken or duck wings, 45 minutes to 1 hour may be sufficient.
3. Can this Chinese braising broth be used with vegetables? Absolutely! This Chinese braising broth is also perfect for braising vegetarian ingredients. Firm tofu, hard-boiled eggs, shiitake mushrooms, lotus roots, or even potatoes will beautifully absorb the broth's flavours. The cooking time will simply be shorter than for meat.
