Who are these formats for?

For one portion during the film

A bar with its weight clearly stated makes it easy to choose how much to take with you. The products featured by Auchan and Carrefour also include mini bars and multipacks. If you only plan to take one, check whether the bars in the pack are individually wrapped.

For anyone checking the ingredients

The recipe matters just as much as the format. Mars, POUCE and other caramel varieties featured by Carrefour and Auchan have different ingredients and possible traces, so check the label for the product you choose.

For comparing portions and nutritional values

A bar’s weight helps you relate the values per portion to the amount you plan to eat. Values per 100 g give you a consistent basis for comparison; where values per bar are also provided, you can check both.

What should you check?

For a solo cinema snack, start with the amount you want, then check the packaging, recipe and nutritional information for the specific product.

What to consider What to check Who is this for?
Portion and convenience Check the weight of one bar and whether each bar is individually wrapped. I want to take just one bar to the film without opening the whole pack. Around 36% of consumers prioritise a portion that’s easy to manage.
Ingredients and allergens Read the ingredients list and any precautionary allergen information on the packaging for the variety you choose. If I need to avoid an ingredient, the exact recipe matters more than the format or texture. This is a priority for around 29% of consumers.
Nutritional values Compare sugars and saturated fat per 100 g, then per portion if that information is provided. I want to know what’s in the bar I plan to eat, rather than judging the product by a single logo. Around 21% of consumers put this comparison first.
Pack size Check the number of bars and the total quantity before choosing a multipack. For a solo film night, I’d rather not open a pack with far more bars than I need. The amount bought is the top priority for around 14% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Judging a bar by the absence of Nutri-Score

The DGCCRF states that Nutri-Score is voluntary in France. Its absence therefore doesn’t tell you anything conclusive about a bar’s nutritional composition. Pre-packed foods are, however, required to display a nutritional declaration.

Check the nutritional information per 100 g and, where shown, per portion: energy, sugars, saturated fat and salt.

  • Assuming the bars in a multipack are individually wrapped

The number of bars doesn’t tell you how they’re packaged. An Auchan listing for a pack of five Mars bars states “Individual sachets: No”.

If you only want to take one bar, look for clear information on the packaging of the product you choose.

A shared pack may be less convenient to carry once opened.

  • Assuming allergens are the same across different recipes

Caramel bars featured by Carrefour and Auchan may contain milk, wheat or barley, soya, egg, peanuts or tree nuts, depending on the variety. Some may also carry warnings about possible traces.

Check the ingredients list and allergen information on the packaging of the product you’re buying, even if you’re familiar with another bar from the same brand.

Brands to know when comparing formats

Mars

Chocolate bars with caramel and nougat, available in classic and mini formats among the products featured by Carrefour and Auchan.

  • An Auchan listing for a Mars multipack gives the weight as 45 g per bar and provides nutritional values for that portion.
  • The same listing states that the five bars aren’t individually wrapped. Check the packaging for the variety you choose.

Auchan / POUCE

Biscuit and caramel bar coated in milk chocolate, sold by Auchan in a 300 g pack.

  • The listing states that the pack contains 15 portions of 20 g, giving you a helpful guide to how much to serve.
  • The recipe includes wheat containing gluten and milk, as well as several possible traces. Don’t assume each portion is individually wrapped.

Carrefour / SIMPL

Chocolate caramel bars featured by Carrefour in a pack of six.

  • The number of bars shown on the listing makes it easy to compare this format with a single bar.
  • The listing mentions allergens and possible traces. Also check whether the product is available at your chosen store.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nutri-Score compulsory on a caramel bar in France?

No. The DGCCRF describes Nutri-Score as voluntary labelling. It does state that pre-packed foods must display a nutritional declaration, so compare the values shown rather than drawing conclusions from the absence of the logo.

What should I check if I need to avoid certain ingredients?

Read the ingredients list and allergen information for the exact product, then check the packaging when you buy it. The caramel recipes featured by Carrefour and Auchan differ, particularly in whether they contain wheat or barley, milk and peanuts, and in their warnings about possible traces.

Does a pack of several bars always contain individually wrapped bars?

No. An Auchan listing for a pack of five Mars bars states “Individual sachets: No”. If you want to take just one bar with you, check this detail on the specific pack you choose.

How should I store a bar before the film?

Follow the instructions on the packaging. For example, for its POUCE caramel product, Auchan recommends an ideal storage temperature of 18 °C.
