Checking your GPS or taking a hands-free call has become second nature behind the wheel. However, handling your smartphone while driving remains a dangerous and strictly prohibited practice. The car phone mount is therefore no longer a gadget, but an essential accessory for your safety and comfort. With the vast array of available models, making the right choice can be daunting.
This guide is here to break down the different options and help you find the mount that is perfectly suited to your vehicle and your needs.
To make the right choice, three main factors should be considered before you make a purchase.
How the mount attaches to your car's interior is the first thing to check.
Once the mount is in place, it still needs to grip your phone firmly.
To do away with messy cables in your car, more and more models are integrating a wireless charger. If your smartphone is compatible with wireless charging (Qi standard), you just need to place it on the mount to charge its battery. Remember to check the charging power (in watts): a 15W model will recharge your device much faster than a 7.5W or 5W model.
From theory to practice. Here are several models that have caught our eye, catering to different needs and budgets.

Our selection covers several use cases, but the car accessory market is vast. There are other clever mechanisms, such as mounts that combine a magnetic hold with a gravity-activated clamp.

Rest assured: no. The magnets used in modern mounts are far too weak to affect the components of our smartphones (flash memory, screen, GPS chip). Old mechanical hard drives could be sensitive to them, but that technology is no longer in our phones. As a precaution, simply avoid leaving your bank cards or magnetic stripe badges in direct contact with the magnets.
For the most part, yes. Most are designed for the horizontal or vertical slats found in the majority of cars. However, they do have their limitations with more uniquely shaped ventilation grilles, such as the round vents typical of some Audi or Mercedes models, or particularly thick ones. A quick look at your dashboard before buying is therefore recommended.
This is a crucial point! To take full advantage of your mount's fast charging (15W, for example), you must connect it to a cigarette lighter adapter (usually sold separately) that delivers at least an equivalent power output. If you use an old 5W adapter, the charging speed will be throttled and very slow. For peace of mind, opt for a USB-C charger of at least 20W, which will guarantee optimal performance.
