Family holidays, solo treks, or festivals with friends... Whatever your adventure, choosing the right camping tent is a crucial step. Faced with an overwhelming range of models, sizes, and technical specs, it's easy to get lost. This guide is here to break down the essentials and help you find the perfect tent, without the unnecessary jargon. Let's analyse the criteria that really matter for making the right choice.
Before you start, here are the key points to check to ensure you make the right decision.
The capacity stated by manufacturers (e.g., 4-person tent) theoretically corresponds to the number of sleeping pads you can squeeze inside. For a minimum level of comfort, to store your gear, or simply to avoid feeling cramped, our advice is simple?: always allow for one more person than the actual number of occupants. A family tent goes even further by offering a separate living area—a real luxury for multi-day stays or rainy afternoons.
A tent's waterproof rating is measured in Schmerber (mm), also known as the water column rating. To handle the sometimes intense downpours in our regions, a waterproof tent with a 3000 mm rating, like those in our selection, offers excellent protection. It's your guarantee for dry nights.
Another crucial point?: seasonality. A 3-season tent is perfect for spring, summer, and autumn. A more robust 4-season tent is designed to withstand harsher conditions like strong winds or light snowfall, thanks to a reinforced structure and materials.
For a lightweight hiking tent, every gram counts. Trekking models therefore prioritise ultralight materials and a minimal pack size. Conversely, if you're car camping, weight becomes secondary to comfort and space.
Don't forget ease of setup—a convenience factor that can make all the difference. A pop-up tent (or "2-second" tent) unfolds in the blink of an eye, ideal for festivals or campers in a hurry. Tunnel or dome tents require a bit more elbow grease but generally offer better living volume and greater stability.
We have selected three models that stand out for their design and excellent value, each tailored to a specific use.

For general use where showers can be sudden, a rating of 2000 mm is the bare minimum. A value of 3000 mm or higher, as featured on our selected models, guarantees you'll stay dry even during heavy, prolonged rain. Also, check the waterproofness of the groundsheet and the presence of taped seams.
Maintenance is simple but essential. After each use, clean the tent with a damp cloth and plain water (never use harsh detergents). Most importantly, make sure it is completely dry before folding it and storing it in its bag. This will prevent mould and mildew and extend the life of the waterproof coatings. Store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
Not necessarily. A 4-season tent is designed to withstand harsher conditions (wind, snow) and is often less ventilated to better retain heat. For primarily summer use, a well-ventilated 3-season tent will often be more comfortable and lighter. However, if you are camping at high altitudes or in regions with very changeable weather, a 4-season tent is a welcome safety feature.
