Buying imported products online gives you access to flavours, games and items that are hard to find in British shops. But an attractive product page isn’t always enough to guarantee a smart purchase. Between professional-sized formats, dodgy translations and promises that are difficult to verify, three pitfalls keep cropping up.
The first concerns the actual size. A 5-litre container, a 205 g box or an 18-piece set don’t suit the same use or the same storage constraints. The second relates to compatibility: a PS5 console can’t take the Xbox Series X version, while tableware designed for a professional kitchen needs appropriate storage space and handling. Finally, authenticity must be checked, especially when it comes to an official Pokémon figurine or any other licensed product.
For Asian food products, the ingredient list should be legible and detailed enough. A mala sauce, for example, may contain soya, wheat, sesame or flavour enhancers. The Ji Xiang Ju Mala sauce (358 g) contains 39% chillies, 2% Sichuan pepper, as well as soya and wheat.
Sichuan specialities can also be particularly salty or spicy. You need to weigh this information against the amount you’ll actually consume. With its 5-litre format, WanFu Sichuan Peppercorn Oil is better suited to a professional kitchen, a caterer or a household that uses it very regularly, rather than occasional use.
For Japanese instant noodles, check the weight per serving, preparation time and number of sachets included. ISDG noodles (77 g) come with one oil sachet and one powder sachet. The recommended preparation is to leave them in around 400 ml of hot water for 5 minutes.
A dinner set may be perfect for a family table without being practical in a restaurant or fast-food outlet. The Colorama GREY 18-Piece Dinner Service includes:
The manufacturer presents it as suitable for professional use and public-facing establishments. The plates are stated to be dishwasher and microwave safe, unless otherwise indicated on the packaging. However, they must not be used on a hob, under a grill or in an oven.
Earthenware can chip if knocked. So inspect each piece before use and avoid extreme temperature changes, such as going straight from the fridge to the microwave.
For an imported video game, check the platform, language and age rating first. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – From Ashes Edition is offered here in the French version on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Even though the title is similar, make sure you choose the listing that matches your console.
For collectables, look for the phrase officially licensed product and check the exact contents of the box. The Pokémon Duo Battle pack brings together Ash and Pikachu and can be used for both play and display. This mention doesn’t say anything about the figurine’s future value: it only confirms the licensing status stated on the product page.
Textile accessories, such as UV protection cycling gloves, should be chosen based on size, material, fit and any compliance information available. A product page that’s vague about dimensions or care instructions deserves extra scrutiny before you order.
Why this choice suits this profile: This size lets you discover Sichuan cooking without investing in a large pack. The sauce works with noodles, stir-fries, dipping sauces or as a base for hot pot.
The net weight, percentages of chilli and Sichuan pepper, and allergens are all listed on the product page.
358 g format, versatile use and storage in a cool, dry place.
Why this choice suits this profile: This large format is ideal for enthusiasts who regularly use aromatic oil for noodles, dumplings, cold dishes or stir-fries.
The 5-litre volume is clearly stated, so you won’t mistake a family-sized pack for one meant for intensive kitchen use.
Stated ingredients limited to rapeseed oil and Sichuan pepper. Best used as a finishing oil to preserve its aroma.
Why this choice suits this profile: This 18-piece grey earthenware dinner service is aimed at large families, restaurants, caterers and establishments looking for uniform sizes.
The three sizes and the set composition are detailed, making it easier to plan storage and anticipate the total weight.
18 pieces, grey colour, stated professional use and claimed dishwasher and microwave compatibility.
Why this choice suits this profile: The box brings together two instantly recognisable characters, perfect for creating a scene or adding to a collection of officially licensed products.
The product page states it is an officially licensed Pokémon product and lists the two figurines included.
Ash and Pikachu together in one box, suitable for both imaginative play and display.
We’ve put together a comprehensive, real-time selection of products that meet these strict criteria, as well as European safety regulations.
Check the product page for the seller, the responsible person in the European Union, any restrictions and the delivery conditions to the UK. For food items, also check that information on ingredients, allergens, storage and the use-by date is available in English or is easy to understand.
Not necessarily. Compare the price per weight or per litre, how often you’ll use it and how long it lasts after opening. A 5-litre container of Sichuan peppercorn oil might be perfect for a restaurant, but could be expensive and bulky for occasional use.
Check the console, edition, language, physical or digital format and PEGI rating separately. For Avatar, the PS5 and Xbox Series X listings are separate: select the one that matches your hardware before you go to checkout.
