Who is this for?

Households that need to restore their washing routine quickly after a breakdown

Get a working appliance again without confusing urgency with a rushed purchase: check the warranty, consider whether a repair is possible, then confirm the delivery date, cost and installation terms. The French Ministry of the Economy reminds consumers that delivery and chargeable installation costs must be provided in writing before purchase.

People working with a restricted installation space

Match the loading style to the available width, depth and height, as well as the clearance needed to open the machine. Front-loading, slim and top-loading models suit different space requirements.

Households choosing a machine to suit their laundry volume and drying needs

Choose a capacity suited to the loads you actually wash. A washer-dryer is worth considering only if drying is a genuine need, as its drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity.

Priorities before buying

Front loading

Choose this if: you have around 60 cm of width and enough space in front of the machine to open the door.

Bear in mind: a slim model mainly reduces the depth and may offer a smaller capacity.

Top loading

Choose this if: width is the main constraint; the top-loading models cited by Que Choisir are around 40 to 46 cm wide.

Bear in mind: the top opening needs clear space above the machine, so its top cannot be used as a worktop.

Washer-dryer

Choose this if: you need to dry clothes at home but cannot install two separate appliances.

Bear in mind: drying capacity is lower than washing capacity, and cycles take longer.

Priority What to check Your needs
Installation and access Measure the width, height, depth, access route and opening area. Check that the door or lid can be opened without obstruction. I want to be able to install and use the machine normally in my kitchen, bathroom or utility room.
Drum capacity Compare the capacity in kg of dry laundry and the limits for individual programmes. ADEME states that 7 kg is usually sufficient; Que Choisir generally puts the need at 5 to 7 kg for one or two people and 7 to 8 kg for an average-sized family. My usual loads should fit without running extra cycles or leaving a large drum only partly filled.
Energy, spin and noise Compare the A to G rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, eco 40-60 programme duration, spin-drying efficiency and noise level. I prefer to compare like-for-like data rather than relying on a single marketing claim or the energy rating alone.
Durability and repair Compare the specific model’s durability index. Since April 2025, it has also applied to washing machines sold in France; according to ADEME, it combines repairability and reliability. I want to assess repairability and reliability before having to replace the appliance again.
Delivery and installation Ask for a written date or timescale, along with delivery and installation costs. If no timescale is given, Service Public states that the seller must deliver within 30 calendar days. I need to know when the machine will arrive and what delivery will really add to the purchase.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Replacing the machine immediately without checking the warranty or repair options

A breakdown does not automatically mean that replacement is the most cost-effective solution. The warranty and an eligible repair could change your decision.

Check the purchase date, applicable warranties and whether the fault is eligible, then request a diagnosis and quote before ordering.

According to the French Ministry of the Economy, delivery and chargeable installation costs must be provided in writing before purchase.

  • Assuming a washer-dryer is two appliances with no compromise

Drying capacity is lower than washing capacity. Drying also takes longer and involves significant water and energy consumption.

Choose this format only if the space saving and at-home drying meet a genuine need. Compare the washing-and-drying cycle data for the specific model and plan to reduce some loads before drying.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to replace a broken washing machine?

No. First check whether the appliance is still covered by a warranty and whether it can be repaired. For a washing machine outside its warranty with an eligible fault, ecosystem states that a €50 Repair Bonus has been available since 1 January 2026 through a QualiRépar repairer; however, ask for a diagnosis and quote suited to the fault.

Which energy label figures should you compare?

Compare appliances on a like-for-like basis: A to G rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, capacity in kg, eco 40-60 programme duration, spin-drying efficiency and noise. These values are standardised, but actual consumption also depends on the programmes, load and usage.

Is the durability index compulsory for new washing machines in France?

Yes. According to ADEME, the requirement has applied to washing machines since April 2025. The index combines repairability and reliability, so compare the rating for the specific model and the associated information before making your choice.

What should you check before ordering a machine for home delivery?

Check the machine’s dimensions and the access route, delivery method and costs, installation service, and a written date or timescale. In France, the seller must provide delivery and chargeable installation costs in writing; if no timescale is given, Service Public states that the maximum period is 30 calendar days.

What protection applies if a new washing machine breaks down soon after purchase?

For a purchase from a professional seller, the legal guarantee of conformity may apply when a defect that existed at the time of delivery appears within two years of delivery. Keep your invoice, order confirmation, correspondence and details relating to the fault, then contact the seller first.
