Who is this guide for?

Keep costs down after a breakdown

You want to get your appliance working again without paying unnecessarily for a repair or replacement. Start by checking your warranties, then compare the quote after any confirmed discount with the full cost of a replacement offer.

Choose refurbished with clear after-sales support

You’re happy to choose an appliance that’s been used before, as long as you know what tests and refurbishment work have been carried out, who the seller is and which warranties apply.

Choose a suitable, long-lasting replacement

You want to check the usable capacity, dimensions, energy consumption and repair options, without treating a rating or manufacturer promise as a guaranteed lifespan.

What should you compare after a breakdown?

Have it repaired

Worth considering: if the appliance still meets your household’s needs and a professional can offer a suitable repair.

Things to weigh up: the condition of the appliance, the parts needed and the timescale can all affect whether a repair is possible; the bonus is not automatic.

Buy refurbished

Worth considering: if you’re happy with a used appliance and the offer explains the checks, work carried out and after-sales support.

Things to weigh up: “refurbished” doesn’t mean every part has been replaced. Check the model reference and the condition of the specific appliance.

Buy new

Worth considering: if a repair isn’t right for your situation or your household’s needs have changed.

Things to weigh up: compare the features, energy consumption and services included. Don’t assume a rating or parts availability guarantees a long lifespan.

Donate, sell or recycle

Worth considering: if you’re not keeping your old appliance, look for a reuse organisation or a suitable collection scheme.

Things to weigh up: collection or take-back services help you get rid of your old appliance, but won’t, on their own, restore its use in your household.

What matters What to check Who is this for?
Keep the overall cost under control Check your warranties and insurance, ask for an itemised quote and compare like-for-like prices including VAT, with the same services such as delivery, installation and take-back. When a breakdown means I have to weigh up my options, I want to compare what I’d pay for a repair with the full cost of a replacement. Around 33% of consumers prioritise the overall cost.
Get back up and running quickly Check the repair timescale, parts availability and delivery date. Find out whether installation is included and suitable for your home. If I can’t go without the appliance for long, the repair or delivery timescale matters just as much as the model I choose. Around 27% of consumers prioritise getting their appliance back in service quickly.
Know the condition and after-sales support For a refurbished appliance, ask for the exact model reference, details of relevant tests and work carried out, the invoice, and the warranty and after-sales support terms. If I choose refurbished, I want to know what’s been checked and who to contact if there’s a problem. Around 20% of consumers prioritise documented condition and after-sales support.
Check it’s suitable and built to last Check the dimensions, capacity, useful features, energy label and rating that applies to the category. Read the terms of any commitment about parts availability. When I replace an appliance, I want it to suit my home and how I use it, with clear information about its energy consumption and repairability. Around 20% of consumers prioritise suitability and durability.

The Repair Bonus is deducted from your bill only if the appliance and the work are eligible and the repair is carried out by a QualiRépar professional. The terms and amounts may change, so check them when you request a quote.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Deducting the Repair Bonus before checking the fault and warranties

The repairer’s certification alone isn’t enough: the appliance and the work must also meet the conditions. A warranty or insurance policy may affect what’s covered, too.

Check your warranties first, then ask for a quote that shows the cost of the work separately from the confirmed Repair Bonus discount.

If the work isn’t eligible, you may have more to pay than you expected.

  • Assuming a good appearance means a full refurbishment

The outside appearance doesn’t tell you what functional tests or repairs have been carried out. “Refurbished” doesn’t mean every part is new or has been replaced.

Ask for the exact model reference, details of relevant checks and work carried out, and the seller’s details and after-sales support terms.

  • Comparing a repair quote only with the replacement’s advertised price

Delivery, installation, take-back and transport may cover different services from one offer to another.

Compare prices including VAT on a like-for-like basis, and check which services are included, how they’ll be arranged and when you’ll be able to use your appliance again.

Delivery, installation, transport of your old appliance and services not included in the offer can all affect your budget.

  • Taking a rating or parts promise as a guarantee of a long lifespan

Ratings vary by appliance category, and manufacturers’ commitments on parts availability come with their own wording and conditions.

Check the details of the relevant rating and the commitment for the exact model reference. Parts availability, warranty cover and an appliance’s lifespan are not the same thing.

A stated parts availability period doesn’t guarantee that replacement parts will be inexpensive.

Brands and networks to know

ENVIE

A reuse and refurbished appliance sales network to consider if you’re looking for a refurbished appliance from a professional seller.

  • The network says collected appliances are repaired, cleaned and tested before being sold.
  • ENVIE states that it offers a warranty of at least one year. Check the commitment made by the store in question, and distinguish it from the legal guarantee of conformity. This general information doesn’t, by itself, tell you about the specific appliance on offer.

Bosch

Bosch 2, 4, 6 and 8 Series washing machines have an official parts search tool, which can help you check whether a particular model can be repaired.

  • Bosch says parts for its washing machines are generally available for 15 years.
  • This commitment doesn’t confirm the cost or lead time for a specific part. The WGG244Z0FR washing machine is no longer available on the manufacturer’s French website.

Miele

The brand has an official parts catalogue and W1 washing machine models to consider when looking for a replacement.

  • Miele says parts are available for at least 15 years after a model’s serial production ends. The WEA125 WCS 8kg Active product page lists an 8 kg capacity, a 1,400 rpm spin speed and the AddLoad function.
  • The specifications and parts commitment come from the manufacturer; they don’t guarantee the lifespan of an individual appliance.

Murfy

A retailer offering repairs and refurbished or new large appliances, worth considering if you’re comparing a replacement with related services.

  • One offer we looked at includes a HighOne WM805A++WVET washing machine with a two-year warranty and home delivery and installation.
  • These terms depend on the offer, the specific appliance, your address and the contract. Check them before comparing the services included.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need to qualify for the Repair Bonus?

Before relying on the discount, ask a QualiRépar professional to confirm that your appliance and the work are eligible. According to ecosystem, the appliance must notably be owned by a household, bought in France, outside the legal or commercial warranty period and not covered by insurance. Some faults and types of work are also excluded. If the conditions are met, the discount will appear on your invoice.

What Repair Bonus amounts are listed for common appliances?

As at 13 October 2026, ecosystem lists a standard amount of €50 for a washing machine, €50 for a dishwasher and €40 for a vacuum cleaner. E-réparation lists €25 for a fridge or freezer, among other amounts. These category amounts don’t confirm that a particular fault is eligible, so check the current terms before booking the work.

Can a percentage of an appliance’s price help you decide whether to repair it?

No. A percentage isn’t an automatic break-even threshold. In a June 2025 publication on practices in 2024, ADEME reported that the average repair price consumers considered acceptable was 30% of the product’s value. That’s a reported opinion, not a technical or economic rule that applies to every appliance. Instead, compare the repair quote after any discount with the like-for-like replacement cost, taking into account the timescale and the professional’s assessment of the appliance’s condition.

What documents should you ask for before buying a refurbished appliance?

Ask for the exact model reference, the condition of the specific appliance, details of relevant tests and work carried out, the invoice, and the after-sales support and commercial warranty terms. “Refurbished” implies that all functions have been tested and work has been carried out where needed to restore them; it doesn’t mean every component has been replaced.

Does a one-year commercial warranty mean a refurbished appliance is only protected for one year?

No. For a purchase from a professional seller, Service Public states that a lack of conformity must become apparent within two years of delivery, whether the item is new, second-hand or refurbished. A commercial warranty is separate: read its terms and don’t confuse it with the legal guarantee.

Which rating should you check for each type of appliance?

For the washing machines concerned, the durability index replaced the repairability index on 8 April 2025. Dishwashers and vacuum cleaners are among the categories covered by the repairability index. The Ministry for Ecological Transition sets out the scope of these ratings, so don’t assume they apply to every household appliance category. The energy label provides separate information for comparing new appliances.

Does the seller have to take away your old appliance when delivering a new one?

Free “one-for-one” take-back applies up to the quantity and type of product sold or replaced. Service Public gives the example of a washing machine delivery: if you want to get rid of your old washing machine at the same time, the retailer must take it back. Arrange the take-back before delivery.
