Who is this choice for?

Housemates who combine larger loads

You share household linens or regularly fill the same laundry basket. Choose a capacity that helps you avoid running extra cycles without leaving a large drum half-empty every time. ADEME and UFC-Que Choisir both highlight the importance of getting this balance right.

Shared households in small homes

The width of the room, the space to move around and the way the machine opens may determine the format before you even compare capacities. A top loader is especially worth considering if width is limited.

Residents mindful of noise and running costs

If laundry schedules vary and the machine is near living areas, spin-cycle noise matters just as much as the water, energy and durability information you compare between models.

Which factors should you compare?

First, consider the size and type of loads residents will wash together. Then check whether the machine and its door or lid will fit in the room, before comparing the usage information for the models that are still in the running.

Factor What to check Who should consider it?
Usable capacity Capacity in kg of dry laundry and the maximum load for each programme; how often you wash large loads. If we often combine sheets, towels and other bulky laundry, drum size is our first decision. Around 31% of consumers rank usable capacity as their top priority.
Spin-cycle noise Noise level in dB and the noise class on the label; where the machine will go and how stable it is. When the machine is near living areas, I want to be able to organise laundry times without disturbing others. Noise is the top priority for around 25% of consumers.
Space and opening clearance Width, depth and the clearance needed to open the machine. In a narrow room, the machine must fit and be easy to load without blocking the way. This would be the deciding factor for around 19% of consumers.
Water, energy and durability kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, Eco 40-60 programme duration and the model’s durability rating. If our household runs frequent cycles, we want to keep an eye on running costs and choose a machine whose durability we can compare. Around 25% of consumers would prioritise this group of factors.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the stated capacity applies to every fabric

The rated capacity applies to dry laundry on the cotton or Eco 40-60 programme. The permitted load may be lower for wool, synthetics and delicate fabrics.

Before planning shared laundry loads, check the maximum load for each programme in the model’s manual.

  • Choosing the biggest drum just to be safe

ADEME and UFC-Que Choisir point out that a poorly matched capacity can mean running extra cycles or regularly using a large drum that is never properly full.

Choose a large capacity if you regularly wash large, bulky loads. Otherwise, compare it with a machine better suited to your usual laundry baskets.

  • Looking only at the energy rating

The European Commission says the label also gives information on energy use per 100 cycles, water per cycle, programme duration and noise. These details can help you choose between machines with similar capacities.

Compare these figures, along with spin performance, on the labels of the models you’re considering.

  • Overlooking durability and after-sales service

If several people will use the machine, it’s worth checking the model’s durability rating and service terms before agreeing how you’ll share it.

Check the rating displayed in France, the warranty terms and how residents will keep the proof of purchase.

Brands to consider, model by model

Bosch

The WAN24209FR front loader, featured by Bosch France, has a stated capacity of 9 kg and a maximum spin speed of 1,200 rpm. It’s worth considering if you regularly combine laundry loads.

  • Bosch advertises a 10-year motor warranty for the WAN24209FR; check the terms for the model you buy.
  • A motor warranty alone doesn’t tell you about the noise, space required or durability of the whole machine.

Whirlpool

The models featured by Whirlpool France let you compare two different formats: the 6 kg TDLR6242SFR/N top loader and the 9 kg FFSP9269WFR front loader.

  • The TDLR6242SFR/N top loader is 40 cm wide, making it an option when space is tight.
  • Compare the capacity and noise levels of each model: Whirlpool states 76 dB for this top loader and 78 dB for the FFSP9269WFR front loader.

Electrolux

The EW6T3465DA top loader featured by Electrolux France combines a 6 kg capacity with a width of 40 cm, making it worth considering when space is a key factor.

  • A top-loading design may suit a layout where opening a front loader would be awkward.
  • Check that 6 kg is enough for the loads you actually combine and that there’s sufficient clearance above the machine to open the lid.

Haier

Haier’s French collection includes freestanding 9 kg washing machines, worth considering if your household regularly washes large loads.

  • These models give you options to compare among 9 kg front loaders.
  • Check the energy label, dimensions, noise level and durability rating for the specific model, rather than assuming every machine in the collection has the same features.

Washing machines to consider on Joybuy

This range includes 8 to 10 kg front loaders for households that regularly combine laundry, plus a 7 kg top loader to consider if width is more limited. For each machine, compare the stated capacity with the programmes you’ll use and the dimensions of your room.

Hisense WF5I8043BWF front-loading washing machine

Hisense WF5I8043BWF, 8 kg front loader

Worth considering if your household combines enough laundry to make use of an 8 kg capacity. The model name indicates a maximum spin speed of 1,400 rpm; check the permitted load for each programme and the space needed to open the door.

Haier X Series 11 HW100-BD14397PGU1 washing machine

Haier X Series 11 HW100-BD14397PGU1, 10 kg

Consider this if residents regularly combine large loads, rather than mostly washing smaller loads separately. The model is rated at 1,400 rpm and energy class A; check the load limits for each programme and the space available.

Haier T Series 7 THASN276TM6-S top-loading washing machine

Haier T Series 7 THASN276TM6-S, 7 kg top loader

A top-loading design is worth considering if width is limited or a front-loading door would be awkward to open. It has a stated capacity of 7 kg and a maximum spin speed of 1,200 rpm. Also measure the clearance above the machine and compare spin-cycle noise.

Frequently asked questions

Does the stated capacity apply to every programme?

No. UFC-Que Choisir says the stated capacity refers to dry laundry on the cotton or Eco 40-60 programme; other fabrics may have a lower maximum load. Check the manual before splitting laundry between programmes.

Will a 9 or 10 kg machine always reduce the number of cycles?

No. Residents need to combine loads that are suitable for that capacity. ADEME and UFC-Que Choisir recommend matching the drum to your actual needs, as the wrong capacity can mean extra cycles or a drum that’s never properly full.

Top loader or front loader: which should you choose for a small room?

Choose based on the dimensions and the space needed to open the machine, then check the usable capacity. UFC-Que Choisir says a standard front loader is around 60 cm wide; the Electrolux EW6T3465DA top loader is 40 cm wide, but has a stated capacity of 6 kg.

Which durability rating should you check in France?

For washing machines, look for the durability rating out of 10 displayed for the model you’re considering. According to the French ministries responsible for the ecological transition, it has been gradually replacing the repairability rating for these appliances since 8 April 2025. Compare it alongside the energy label.
