Which option is right for you?
The right style depends as much on the space you have to store the appliance as it does on the surfaces you need to clean.
For frequent quick cleans
If you want to take the vacuum out for a few minutes and put it away straight afterwards, a cordless stick vacuum is a handy choice for quick touch-ups. However, UFC-Que Choisir points out that its running time and suction may limit its suitability for more demanding cleans.
For rugs and a mix of floor types
If rugs, carpets or parquet floor gaps are part of your regular cleaning routine, don’t choose based on compact size alone. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes between a stick vacuum for quick touch-ups and a more thorough clean, for which a cylinder vacuum may be a better fit.
For a home where a robot can move around
A robot vacuum needs a suitable spot for its dock and enough clear floor space. ECOVACS’ instructions for some DEEBOT models show that low objects or small rugs can get in the way during initial mapping. Check the instructions for the model you’re considering.
What should you check before choosing?
Cordless stick vacuum
Best for ? Short, frequent cleans when it’s important to be able to take the vacuum out and put it away easily.
The trade-off : UFC-Que Choisir notes that running time drops at higher power, and suction may be more limited than with a cylinder vacuum.
Compact cylinder vacuum
Best for ? A vacuum that will also be used regularly on rugs, carpets or dirtier areas.
The trade-off : You’ll need space to store the hose and cable, and to move the whole appliance around while you clean.
Robot vacuum
Best for ? Regular cleaning cycles if you can leave the dock in place and keep the robot’s routes clear.
The trade-off : The floor preparation and space needed around the dock vary by model. A robot won’t necessarily replace all manual cleaning.
Once you’ve chosen a style, weigh up its limitations against your floors, available storage space and how long you need to clean for.
| Factor | What to check | What I need |
| Running time |
For a cordless stick vacuum, compare the running times at the setting you’ll use, not just the maximum. UFC-Que Choisir says running time is generally quoted at the lowest power setting; its tests found an average of around ten minutes at maximum power. |
I want to finish a useful cleaning session without having to stop while cleaning rugs or dirtier areas. |
| Storage |
Measure the space available for the appliance and its accessories. For a stick vacuum, check that it can be stored securely too; for a cylinder vacuum, allow room for the hose and cable. |
In a small space, I need a vacuum that I can take out and put away without having to rearrange the room. |
| Floor types |
Look for test results on the surfaces in your home: hard floors, rugs, carpets or parquet floor gaps. According to UFC-Que Choisir, motor power alone isn’t enough to judge a vacuum cleaner’s performance; the design of the floorhead matters too. |
My rugs or parquet flooring may need more than a quick touch-up on a hard floor. |
| Robot clearance |
Check the required clearance around the dock and the manual’s guidance on obstacles. For one DEEBOT model, ECOVACS requires 0.5 m on each side and 1.5 m in front of the dock; these measurements don’t apply to every model. |
If I choose a robot, I need to be able to leave its dock somewhere accessible and prepare the floor before cleaning cycles. |
| Maintenance |
Check how easy it is to access the dust container, filter and brush, and how to clean them. If you’re choosing a battery-powered appliance, also check the charging and storage instructions. |
I prefer maintenance tasks that fit around how often I do quick cleans. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a stick vacuum’s maximum running time enough to help me choose?
No. According to UFC-Que Choisir, it’s generally measured at the lowest setting; its tests found an average of around ten minutes at maximum power. Compare the running time in the mode you’ll use on your floors rather than relying on the maximum figure alone.
Can a cordless stick vacuum replace a cylinder vacuum on every floor type?
Not necessarily. UFC-Que Choisir sees a stick vacuum as better suited to quick touch-ups, while a cylinder vacuum may be a better choice for regular cleaning on rugs, carpets or parquet floor gaps. Compare test results for the surfaces in your home.
What should I measure before setting up a robot vacuum in a small home?
Measure the space for its dock and check the clearances required in the manual for your chosen model. For example, for the DEEBOT models concerned, ECOVACS requires 0.5 m of clear space on each side and 1.5 m in front of the dock. The brand also recommends removing small objects before initial mapping.
What maintenance does a stick vacuum need?
Empty the dust container and clean the filter and brush according to the manufacturer’s instructions. UFC-Que Choisir highlights the importance of this maintenance and recommends storing the battery in a dry place at a stable temperature, away from frost, heat and direct sunlight.
What should I do with a vacuum cleaner or battery at the end of its life in France?
Vacuum cleaners are covered by France’s collection scheme for electrical and electronic equipment. The ministry responsible for ecological transition says that batteries can be taken to places including supermarkets, electronics and DIY shops, as well as some town halls and recycling centres. Before removing a non-removable battery, check the manufacturer’s instructions.
