The multifunction immersion blender promises a clutter-free kitchen and meals prepared in a flash. Soups, smoothies, purées, sauces… On paper, the promise is tempting. Yet, how many models end up at the back of a cupboard, victims of critical design flaws or overly optimistic marketing?? As the Head of the Equipment section at Joybuy, my mission is to help you gain some clarity. Let's explore how to avoid the classic pitfalls and invest in an appliance that will become a true everyday ally.
The market is flooded with options, but be warned, not all are created equal. Before you decide, watch out for these three common pitfalls that can turn a good investment into a regret.
To ensure your appliance's performance and longevity, focus on these three technical pillars.
A good powerful hand blender is nothing without perfect control. A rated power between 600 and 1000W is a good benchmark for versatile home use. More importantly, the presence of a variable speed control is essential. It allows you to adapt the blade rotation to the consistency of your ingredients: a slow speed to prevent splashing at the start, and a high speed to get a perfectly smooth purée.
On this point, no compromises are possible. A stainless steel blender shaft is the only sensible choice. Unlike plastic, stainless steel offers several key advantages:
You can recognise a true multifunction immersion blender by the quality of its accessories. Here are the points to check:

What wattage is best for an immersion blender? For regular home use (soups, smoothies, sauces), a rated power between 500 and 800 watts is more than sufficient, provided the blade design and overall quality are good. For more demanding tasks like crushing ice (if the model supports it) or blending very fibrous ingredients, a model approaching 1000 watts may be more comfortable.
Can I blend hot soup directly in the pot? Yes, but on one crucial condition: you must use a blender with a stainless steel shaft. Stainless steel is heat-resistant and will not warp when in contact with hot liquid. It is strongly discouraged to do this with a plastic shaft, which could melt, deform, or release unwanted substances into your food.
How do I properly clean an immersion blender and its accessories? The easiest way is to rinse the blender shaft under hot water immediately after use. For a deep clean, fill the beaker with hot water and a drop of dish soap, immerse the shaft, and run it for a few seconds. Most removable shafts and accessories (whisk, chopper bowl) are now dishwasher-safe, but always check the manufacturer's instructions. The motor unit, however, should never be submerged: a simple wipe with a damp cloth is all it needs.
