Who should consider each factor?

Households that stock up in bulk

If you buy in bulk or store bulky food, start by checking the usable capacity and how much space the appliance will take up. If you’re planning to keep a large stock of food, also check how long it can keep food frozen during a power cut.

People who want to find food quickly

If you open your freezer often and keep different types of food separate, access to the compartments matters just as much as capacity. Check the drawers or baskets, how easy they are to remove and whether there’s room for large packages.

Households with a cellar, garage or utility room

Before installing a freezer there, compare the room’s temperatures with the range permitted for the exact model. An unheated room isn’t automatically suitable: check the appliance documentation for its climate class and any specific cold-weather capabilities.

Which features should you compare?

Chest freezer

Best if: you want to stock up in bulk or store bulky items in a room with enough space.

Bear in mind: it takes up floor space, and food at the bottom can be harder to reach.

Upright freezer

Best if: you take food out regularly and want to organise it in drawers.

Bear in mind: the compartments may make it harder to store very large packages.

Under-counter freezer

Worth considering: if fitting the appliance under a worktop is the deciding factor and capacity is less important.

Bear in mind: this format generally can’t meet the same storage needs as a large, dedicated appliance.

Fridge freezer

Worth considering: if you’re also replacing your fridge and want both functions in one appliance.

Bear in mind: the fridge freezer’s total capacity doesn’t tell you how much space is available for frozen food.

Feature What to check before buying Who is it for?
Capacity and available space Compare the usable capacity for frozen food, then measure the space available and the clearance needed to open the door or lid. If I want to stock up in bulk or store large packages, I need enough room without blocking the way through the room. Around 33% of consumers would put this need first.
Access and organisation Check how easy it is to reach food at the back, and the size of the drawers and baskets and whether they can be removed. If I regularly take food from my freezer, I want to find what I need without rummaging through the whole appliance. This would be a priority for around 27% of consumers.
Location and power cuts Check the permitted ambient temperature range for the model. If power cuts are a concern, also compare its stated storage time in hours. In an unheated room, I need to know whether the appliance can operate there. If I have a large stock of food, I also need to consider power cuts. Around 27% of consumers would prioritise the location or storage time.
Fit and energy use For a fridge freezer, check the usable capacity of the freezer compartment. For appliances with a similar function and capacity, compare their kWh/an. If space is limited or I’m also replacing my fridge, I want an appliance that fits into my home without overlooking its ongoing energy use. Around 13% of consumers would put this first.

According to UFC-Que Choisir, a chest freezer can hold up to 600 L, while upright models generally have less capacity and make it easier to organise food in compartments. These figures give you an idea of the formats available. To decide, compare the dimensions, usable capacity and layout of models that will actually fit in your home.

What to avoid before you buy

  • Choosing a chest freezer based on capacity alone

A large capacity is no use for stocking up if the freezer won’t fit through your home during delivery or its lid can’t open properly. Food at the bottom can also be difficult to find.

Measure the access route, installation area and clearance needed to open the lid. If you choose a chest freezer, plan how you’ll organise and label food in baskets or containers.

  • Assuming any model will work in a cellar or garage

Ambient temperature is one of the appliance’s operating conditions. Bosch explains that a room that’s too cold or too hot can affect how it works. A specific cold-weather capability applies only to models that state it.

Note the room’s minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the year, then check them against the manual for the model you’re considering.

  • Comparing energy ratings alone

A freezer runs continuously, as ADEME points out. Its energy rating letter doesn’t replace checking its annual energy consumption or considering how much capacity you need.

Compare the kWh/an of appliances with a similar function and capacity, and don’t choose extra capacity unless your stock of food calls for it.

  • Assuming a large fridge freezer can replace a dedicated freezer

Some of a fridge freezer’s capacity is taken up by the fridge. If you buy lots of frozen food, check the freezer compartment’s capacity and how much food it can freeze in one go as separate factors.

Check these specifications for the exact model before getting rid of a dedicated freezer.

Brands to consider by model

Beko

Worth considering if you’re looking for a freestanding chest or upright freezer, particularly for an unheated room.

  • Beko states that the HSM14540 chest freezer has a capacity of 205 L, a stated storage time of 23 h and can operate at ambient temperatures as low as -15 °C.
  • These specifications apply to the HSM14540. They don’t prove that another Beko model will be suitable for your room, so check its own manual.

Bosch

Consider an upright freezer with drawers if easy access to food and space for some bulky items are important to you.

  • Bosch lists a capacity of 249 L, a Big Box drawer, a door alarm and a stated storage time of 11 h for the GSV36VWEV.
  • These specifications apply to the GSV36VWEV. If you’re installing it outside the kitchen, check the permitted ambient temperature range for your chosen model separately.

Electrolux

Worth a look if you’re comparing a fridge freezer with a dedicated freezer and want to check the appliance’s operating guidance.

  • Electrolux support documentation provides guidance on setting up refrigeration appliances.
  • This general guidance doesn’t replace the installation requirements and climate class specified in the manual for your chosen model.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install any freezer in an unheated garage or cellar?

No. Check the permitted ambient temperature range for the exact model in its manual or on its rating plate. For example, Beko states that the HSM14540 can operate at temperatures as low as -15 °C. This feature doesn’t apply to other freezers.

How do you compare storage times during a power cut?

Check the stated storage time in hours for each model and, if provided, how it was measured. UFC-Que Choisir measures the time it takes for the temperature to rise from -17 °C to -9 °C without power. Times stated by different manufacturers can only be compared directly under equivalent conditions.

Does a No Frost freezer need no maintenance at all?

No. Beko describes the No Frost fan-assisted cooling in the B3RFNE294W as a way to prevent frost from building up, but you should still follow the manual for cleaning and check the condition of the seals and alarms. The specific tasks depend on the model.

What warranty applies to a freezer bought from a professional seller in France?

According to the French Ministry of the Economy, the statutory legal guarantee of conformity applies to goods bought by a private individual from a professional seller, whether they’re new, second-hand or refurbished. This is separate from any commercial guarantee offered by the seller or manufacturer.

What should you do with your old freezer when replacing it?

When buying a similar appliance, ask the seller about their ‘one-for-one’ take-back service. The French Ministry for the Ecological Transition distinguishes this from take-back schemes that don’t require a purchase, which depend in particular on the conditions at the point of sale.
