Buying priorities
Start by working out how much frozen food you need to store, then check accessibility, placement and features designed for continuous use.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Storage capacity |
Compare usable freezer capacity, not the total capacity of a fridge freezer. Also check the external dimensions and the access routes to the installation location. |
I want to store bulk buys, prepared meals or bulky packs without choosing an unnecessarily large appliance. |
| Access and storage |
Look at the drawers, bins, shelves and compartments for larger items. With a chest freezer, plan to use baskets, labels or a food rotation system. |
I want to find food without having to move a large proportion of my supplies. |
| Room temperature |
Compare the climate class and stated ambient temperature range with the actual minimum and maximum temperatures in the room. Check the rating plate and the instructions for the exact model. |
My appliance must be able to operate in a kitchen, utility room, cellar or garage that meets its specified conditions. |
| Continuous use |
Compare the energy class, annual energy consumption, noise level and defrosting system of appliances with similar formats and capacities. |
I want to limit the noise, maintenance and energy consumption associated with food storage that operates all year round. |

Frequently asked questions
Is a chest freezer better than an upright freezer for building up food stocks?
Not necessarily. A chest freezer is mainly suitable when capacity and floor space are the priorities; UFC-Que Choisir states that some chest freezers can hold up to 600 l. An upright freezer is better suited to households that need frequent access to food and want to organise it in drawers or compartments.
Can I install a freezer in an unheated garage or cellar?
Yes, but only if the exact model is designed for the room’s actual ambient temperature. European regulations define the climate class as the range in which the required storage conditions are maintained; check the rating plate and the instructions. Liebherr states that the CFe 2500 Pure can operate down to -15 °C, while Beko lists 5 °C as the minimum ambient temperature for the FSE1174N.
Can a large fridge freezer replace a separate freezer?
Yes, if its freezer capacity is sufficient for your food stocks. For example, Bosch lists 129 l of freezer capacity and 311 l of fridge capacity for the KGN492IAF: a large total capacity does not automatically replace a chest freezer or large upright freezer for frozen food.
Which product specifications should I compare first?
First compare usable freezer capacity, dimensions and climate class, followed by energy class, annual consumption, noise level, defrosting system and stated storage time during a power cut. European energy labelling applies to electric refrigeration appliances with a capacity of more than 10 l and up to 1,500 l.
What should I do with my old freezer in France?
An old freezer is covered by the waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling scheme. France’s Ministry for Ecological Transition points out that these appliances may contain hazardous components and recyclable materials: use the collection service offered by the seller, a collection point or an approved recycling scheme rather than putting it in household waste.
